EMaxx Questions/help...

Hi all I have quite a number of questions to put to you intellectuals  all involving an Emaxx.
I know there have been many custom maxxes built and they have inspired me to try and make my own so the basic outline I had in mind was:
FLM Chassis...
And thats it
This is where I need your help because I am on a tight budget so need to get this mostly right first time. I need help choosing diffs I don't mind spending money on quality as long as it works and lasts...
If I buy FLM Hybrid bulks I would need 1/8th scale diffs, right? but then to run standard traxxas drive shafts I would need to modify them? Could I run them un-modified with CVD's?
If I bought FLM combo bulks would I be restricted to standard diffs? Is this an issue?
Thats the main ones for now but I'm sure more will be thrown up as I'm new to maxxes, any help would be appreciated, thanks

If you got the FLM HYBRID "combo" bulks you are not restricted to the stock diffs. You can use 1/8 diffs. You can check out my build for ideas.

K1RC 12.29.2011 02:51 PM

I thought the "combo" bulks and "hybrids" were different things all together? Thats what it looks like on the FLM website? Maybe I'm just confused
If I go 1/8th scale diffs I'm reluctant to spend major £££ so what would be cheap-ish? Is it Hyper 8 diffs most use?

coolhandcountry 12.29.2011 05:34 PM

Combo bulk use stock diffs.
Hybird bulk use 1/8 buggy diffs.
Mike has the shafts to install in the 1/8 buggy diffs to use stock shafts.

Ah thanks
If I just bought buggy diffs and CVD's would I not need to buy that little shaft or modify them?

coolhandcountry 12.29.2011 07:35 PM

The cvds will slide in the buggy cups.
No mods required there.
The center needs dog bones though.

K1RC 12.30.2011 09:24 AM

So if I bought to of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hyper-7-8-...#ht_500wt_1202
And some CVD's they would just drop straight into the Hybrid bulks?
Also I found some Proline powerstrokes for $155 and the bypass' are new is this a good deal? I know they're some of the best out there and I love their look

coolhandcountry 12.30.2011 09:45 AM

That does look like the ones you need.

K1RC 12.30.2011 09:52 AM

Did I read somewhere I have to change the crown gear to make it fit or was that something else completely?
Do you think the shocks are a good deal?

coolhandcountry 12.30.2011 01:30 PM

I thought that was only on the newer 9 model.
Could be wrong though.

K1RC 12.30.2011 02:59 PM

I guess I'll just have to buy them and find out then!
What CVD's would anyone recommend Losi xxl's? Do they need a modification?

George16 12.30.2011 04:47 PM

You don't have to change the crown gear.

suicideneil 12.30.2011 06:38 PM

Yup, crown-gear change is/was only required if you could only get hold of the truggy diffs with spiral cut teeth, the buggy diffs use straight-cut teeth which is what you linked to.

Don't forget your shims: clicky

:intello:

K1RC 12.31.2011 05:39 AM

Ok thanks guys
Any recommendations on CVD's?

suicideneil 01.01.2012 11:49 AM

I'd say either the traxxas or MIP cvds should be fine, though there is always the option of running LST XXL cvds if you don't mind a tiny bit of modding work:

There are a few ways to make 'em fit depending on which knuckles/bearing carriers you go with, but they are the beefiest option pretty much.

K1RC 01.01.2012 01:17 PM

I read both of those but thought it would be difficult to do... If I used stock knuckles then which one would be easier? The second way looks expensive haha

suicideneil 01.02.2012 11:00 AM

I'm not sure you could do it with stock knuckles, since you need to change both bearings- it may be tricky to find any that fit well with or without shimming. Only way to find out is to grab the cvds and start experimenting- you can get them pretty cheap on ebay so no great loss if you can't make them work.

K1RC 01.03.2012 02:33 PM

The first link you posted says you can use stock carriers I believe? Yeah you're right its just money is tight atm so I can't afford to make too many mistakes haha... Also I have very few tools so most work will have to be done at school.
Are there then limits to what arms I could use with the Losi ones likewise the traxxas ones?
Thanks for the help btw I really appreciate it :mdr:

suicideneil 01.04.2012 07:51 AM

Any a-arms should be fine, they won't affect what knuckles or driveshafts you can use. Probably could use the stock knuckles, I think I did see someone try that route by reaming the bearing recesses to fit shims now that you mention it...

K1RC 01.04.2012 02:26 PM

I think I'll probably just go with the traxxas CVD's as all I need is in there and I don't have to try and figure it out, once I get up and running and if I find issues then I may try to convert to the Losi ones...
Whats your opinion(s) on the Flm arms?

suicideneil 01.04.2012 04:21 PM

Seen plenty of guys using them, no complaints really; anything will bend if you crash hard enough but for normal bashing & jumping I think they'll be fine ( quite a beefy design & good quality aluminium ).

K1RC 01.05.2012 03:25 PM

How do they compare to Widetracs and other UE stuff? I won't be too silly

suicideneil 01.06.2012 09:57 AM

I think they compare pretty closely- both come in 6061 T6 aluminium flavour ( though UE also use 7075 T6 for the hi-impact variants I think ), both are very chunky and well braced, plus FLM have their life-time warranty offer on parts, so they will discount the price on replacements if you manage to bend them.

K1RC 01.06.2012 02:15 PM

Sounds good I'll have a look on ebay and see if I can find any deals :mdr:
I think that answers all my questions for now so thanks a million I'll try and let you know how it goes

gumleguf 01.06.2012 04:40 PM

Actually UE WideTrac Gen. 2 is made from 7075-T6 aluminum:

K1RC 01.07.2012 06:28 AM

If I bought those I would have to run UE's CVD's though?

You don't have to. The widetracs have the same geometry with the stock arms.

K1RC 01.07.2012 12:00 PM

But aren't the bearings in the knuckles a different size to the stock ones?

gumleguf 01.07.2012 02:54 PM

You probably won't be able to find either UE driveshafts or knuckles.

If you get the WideTrac and use the titanium turnbuckles that comes with it you need the old style knuckles/axles carriers like the RPM T/E-Maxx 1.5 & 2.5 Axle Carriers:

http://www.rpmrcproducts.com/product...mall/80032.jpg

You could also buy new turnbuckles like the Lunsford Racing #2802 and then use the new style knuckles/Axle carriers like the RPM Revo, T-Maxx 2.5R / 3.3 & E-Maxx 16.8V Axle Carriers:

K1RC 01.07.2012 04:27 PM

Oh right ok that makes sense thank you  I'll try and hunt some arms down on ebay and then probably buy the new rpm knuckles and a new set of turnbuckles as well.
If I did that I would be able to run the traxxas CVD's just to be sure?

gumleguf 01.07.2012 04:32 PM

You are welcome.

Yes:
