XRAY XB8R and brushless

Hi all !

I'm new here and for my 1st post i'd like to know 2 or 3 things for my project...

I bought a XB8R yesterday on the web and I'm waiting for it during this week. But I'll put a brushless motor on it, not a nitro ! So I'll need to make some changes...

I think the total weight of the XB8R will be about ~ 4.2 kg whith 2x6 GP3300 battery pack, motor w/ESC, servo, etc...

So which brushless must I put on it and which pinion gear ??

Any advices ? Thanks.

MetalMan 05.17.2006 08:43 AM

Welcome!

The ideal motor and ESC for your application depends on how much you can spend. You could go with a Quark Monster 125amp ESC ($280) and a Lehner 1940 motor ($285), or you could use a less expensive setup.

Philyon 05.17.2006 10:15 AM

Thanks for your reply.

Your setup is a little expensive for me. I thought to put a Lehner 3100 on it with a less expensive ESC, but which one ?
And about the pinion gear, how much tooth must I choose ?

Thanks

squeeforever 05.17.2006 03:37 PM

Well the pinion gear will depend on the motor so one step at a time. I wouldnt run a Lehner XL3100 on a buggy. It would get rather hot. I would personally go for a Wanderer 7XL or 8XL depending on what speeds and runtimes you want. Also, I to would recommend the Quark 125 but if its more than you want to spend a Warrior 9920 will do just fine.

coolhandcountry 05.17.2006 06:32 PM

The L cans will work as well. I would run like a 10L in it though.

Philyon 05.23.2006 02:12 PM

And why not a 2in1 solution like the HV-Maxx ?

I can put 1x6 pack cells or 2x6

coolhandcountry 05.23.2006 02:58 PM

to run a hv maxx on a buggy it is going to be hard to gear it correctly. The hv maxx has a high kv rating.

MetalMan 05.23.2006 05:19 PM

Also, the HV-Maxx has a 1/8" shaft, which would make it prone to breaking. A member here used one in a HV-Maxx, but said that it didn't end up working out too well.

Nick 05.23.2006 05:39 PM

HV-Maxx isn't too good. Not very powerful. If you tried a HV, then went to a 10L, you'll be amazed and never want to go back. :P

A few people I know, went for the HV and now have a Wanderer, or other Brushless setup, as the performance isn't really mind boggling.

coolhandcountry 05.23.2006 07:38 PM

The hv has power I would guess closer to a 380 xl motor. I think the 380 I have will out run a hv though. The 10L would be a lot nicer motor.

Philyon 05.25.2006 04:49 AM

Thanks

Mike adviced me this choice : warrior 9920 with Feigao 540c 7xl + mod1 12 tooth pinion with 44 tooth kyosho spur.
I think it's a good choice and I'll go for it.

About servo, I thought to put a Futaba 3305 ? Is it a good choice or must I buy a more powerful servo like the 9350 ?

HotnCold 05.25.2006 06:47 AM

Im not sure on the specs on the futaba one you mentioned - but you might wanna get one that has at least 100oz of torque and at least .10 or faster transit time at 6.0v. The hitec 925 is a good alternative to spending a lot of money - if you dont mind hitec servos. If you want the baddest one out there - the hitec 5955 digital servo would be the ticket imho. But that one is more for monster trucks with bigger tires. Just in case you are wondering what the main diff between the digital and analog servos are - the analog has a certain amount of power at a certain spot in the transit - and looses the power slightly when rotating - the digital servo, if it says 120 oz of torque, then it has is from start to finish. Hope this helps ya a little.....

Gustav 05.25.2006 07:03 AM

Airtronics 94358z would be good (200oz/.10 sec @6v)or the faster version,94357z (125oz/.07 sec @6v).$109 though.

Philyon 05.26.2006 08:00 AM

Ok thanks for your help, last question :
Are there many differences (speed/runtime) between 8xl and 7xl ?

Oldrc10 06.05.2006 08:56 AM

Can I get an update on this project. I want to covert my Xray XB8R to Brushless and need help deciding what to use. Can I keep both my 7.4v 3200 lipo batteries and run them in series?

Serum 06.05.2006 10:01 AM

depending on the quality of the batteries.

i am using a 9L on my mbx4 and it runs nice and relative cool

Philyon 06.05.2006 10:49 AM

Is it possible to have a picture of two batteries packs in series ? I never use them like this and I would like to know how to wire them to the controller please.

Serum -> Could you send me a pic of your mb4x with all connected parts in details please ? It will be very helpfull for my project ! I always ran Tamiya cars with Tamiya connectors and it's a bit difficult to have a good idea of how wire all that with new connectors and cables !

Thanks you ! :003:

Serum 06.05.2006 10:59 AM

3 Attachment(s)
Dirty.. but doable..

RCHippie did the conversion. He did a great job on it. I love it.

make the motormount from an L profile. If you have got a differential holder that has got an upper and a lower part, connect the motor to the upper part (the two holes of the brake are handy in this)

Philyon 06.05.2006 11:23 AM

Thanks Serum !

I ordered a motor mount to "Coldfusion" from "radiocontrolzone" forum and it has a L profile too. I think i'll receive it in the next days.

(Finally I ordered a Feigao 540C 9l with bk9920.)

Can you send me a pic of your battery pack in series please ?

Serum 06.05.2006 12:52 PM

Just search for it here on the forum, there are several of these drawings going around.

fishmasterdan 06.05.2006 10:39 PM

Phil;
Can you post some of the motor mount pictures here. I want to get the info on those but I cant register on there web site to see the photos (need an ISP email and I dont have one).

Also I would like to get his contact #/email Thanks

Oldrc10 06.07.2006 02:25 PM

Ok so what do I need to convert my Xray to a Brushless system. I would like to try to stay within a budget and I have 2 3200 7.2 v lipo and 1 6400 7.2 lipo.

Thanks,
Scott

Serum 06.07.2006 04:40 PM

They look like a hack-job to me?

How much do you need to pay for them?

Philyon 06.07.2006 05:25 PM

It cost $22 per piece. But I'm waiting for it, I didn't receive it yet.

On the other hand I received my order from Mike ! But now I need Mod1 pinion (I forgot to order it ... )

The questions are :

-With my Feigao 540C 9L and a Kyosho 44 tooth nylon spur diffs, how much tooth pinion must I need exactly ? 12, 13 ?

- Do I need to order for my 9L a "5mm bore, mod1 pitch pinion" or "RC-Monster Hardened Steel Mod1 Pinions" ??

Thanks

Oldrc10 >
You don't need much items if you already have your car
The essentiel pieces are : motor + esc + 2x6 cells (or lipo) + motormount

Romster 06.07.2006 09:50 PM

I bought a cold fusion motor mount..$22
Order it in Dec 2005 and received it at the end of February 2006. 2 1/2 months
Just to warn you. You might be waiting a while. You send money but, he does not really return your e-mails.... Comes up with all the excuses my computer went down, out of materials, busy with school, I am only 16yrs old, and ect............ and the list of excuses goes on...........
Some customers got their motor mounts
-motor mount is crooked
-Holes on motor mount does not line up correctly.
-Holes are to small
Some of the batch of mounts come out ok.
Glad my came out ok... Nice and beefy.
I will never buy from Cold fusion products! Customer service S#!KS !!!

An yes you need too order a 5mm mod1 pinion for your 9L. That is if you have a 5mm shaft on your 9L.
hope this helps.

Romster 06.07.2006 09:52 PM

Serum,
Yes!! It is a Hack Job!

Philyon 06.08.2006 03:30 AM

Thanks Romster ! I hope I'll receive it soon ... Wait and see

So I'll order a 5mm Mod1.

hum.. 12 or 13 tooth in your opinion ?

Serum 06.08.2006 07:09 AM

12 to start with. Closely observe the temps of the motor/speedo though..

If you just get an L profile, jigsaw, rasps, dremel and some patience, you can make your own, any way you like it.

Dafni 06.08.2006 07:19 AM

Those mounts really are nothing special. And if you don't manage to make the holes lining up... says alot.

I myself would not dare to sell something like this.

coolhandcountry 06.08.2006 07:52 AM

I don't think you made something like that. Yours always turns out so spiffy.

Dafni 06.08.2006 08:16 AM

Thank you!

Serum 06.08.2006 08:27 AM

It doesn't look like this guy used a mill, it looks like it was done by hand..

coolhandcountry 06.08.2006 09:23 AM

It sure does. I have done stuff look that good.

Philyon 06.28.2006 07:36 AM

Hi guys !

I've just received my motor mount from Coldfusion today ! It took one month to have it.

Now I'd like to know if I am on the right way about connecting cells, ESC and Motor. I take a picture to show you :

http://philippely.free.fr/images/Connecxionq.JPG

I put males connectors on motor and females on the esc, I don't know if I'm right ? Or must I invert them, Esc->Male and Motor->Female ?

And about cells Must i put males or females connectors on the ESC ?

Thanks !

Here is a pic of my motor mount :
http://philippely.free.fr/images/Mount.JPG

squeeforever 06.28.2006 09:48 AM

Well, I run male on my esc and female on the motor, but it doesn't matter. However, it does matter on the batteries. Put male on the esc in that case. I would recommend Deans instead of bullet connectors.

Philyon 06.28.2006 01:05 PM

Ok, Thank you squee!

squeeforever 06.28.2006 01:51 PM

No problemo man!

That is nice. I was expecting bad video. I thought it was decent. Could have been longer with a fewjumps in it. ;)
