Tamiya TRF801Xt-e
Here is the start of my Tamiya TRF801Xt-e Truggy.
I bought this from Tamiya via there strach and dent sale. I was looking for a 1/8th scale truggy or buddy kit to build. For $200 I think it's a great truggy. All of the parts seem to be of very high quality and everything went together smoothly. This is also my first Tamiya kit. Right now the truggy is at RC-Monster getting a electric conversion kit made. This truck will have a Tekin RX8 & 1700kv T8 with a JR steering sero. Here are some pictures. http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...2/RC/005-1.jpg http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...2/RC/004-2.jpg http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...C/IMG_7894.jpg More to come once it returns from RCM. Been thinking about picking up a Truggy from that sale...
|
Lincpimp loves Tamiya he will be jealous. Always wondered how their kits were. Keep us posted!
|
Out of curiosity, what was wrong with it?
|
There was nothing wrong with it at all. My kit was missing one small plastic part but I contacted Tamiya and they mailed one right out, very quickly.
This was a scratch and dent sale. Mostly just the outside of the box were suppose to be damaged but the kit was in new shape. My box was new looking and everything inside looked untouched when I received it. Nick |

I can verify - the truck is quite nice - a steal for $200 IMO and I look forward to finishing the conversion. :-)

Thanks again Mike. Nick |
My favorite truggy! Cant wait to see where this goes.

Happy 4th Everyone. Hope you all had a good day today.
Got a message from Mike saying the truggy should be done somtime next week. I'm looking forward to getting her finished. I have everything waited to be bolted on. Nick |
Just got an update from Mike last night. The truggy is almost done. Mike just needs to cut the plate for the servo mount.
Here is a pic so far. I really like how he was able to keep the top plate for the center diff. http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...2/TRF801Xt.jpg Nick |
Here is another pic from Mike. The servo top plate/ receive box mount is done. Hoping to get the truggy back next week and running before the weekend.

Very nice as always! Love Mikes conversions

Here are a few more pictures from last night. The truck showed up and looks even better in person. I really like the Monster figure on the servo mount plate.

Got the truggy finished today. I really like the layout of the electronics and all of the pieces that Mike made.
The only thing I would like to redo is the wiring from the esc to the motor. Is was already done from when this combo was in my D8T so I left it for now. I'm calling this my "wifes" truck so I let her pick the colors. The blue/purplish color is more purple in person that what shows up on my screen. http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps27f8bd6c.jpg http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps7aed69bf.jpg http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps18fb54d3.jpg http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps3a47fc12.jpg http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps8310f2e2.jpg Nick |
I really love my badlands on my truggy! They are some great all terrain performing tires. Digging the look, Tamiya did an awesome job, and mike really kept that clean organized layout flowing. Kudos. Know that you mention it, You should check out the braided wire Hobbyking sells. Some great stuff really makes the wires look cool. Here Is what im yapping about. Some great stuff, just make sure to heat shrink both ends to prevent fraying.
|
I was going to give you a hard time for girly purple lid the car is sitting on in the first pics, then I continued on to read that the ride itself, has a purple lid:lol:
Wife's ride..... |
Nice clean and simple layout. As for the wire coverings...I have used them. Ended up ditching them as the ends fray and look like crap unless u wrap them with shrink tubing. I wrap all my wiring in black shrink tubing to make them less noticeable and add another layer of protection....even motor and battery wires...
like pic here of my daughter's TEN T... http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j...psdcdfedfc.jpg Like the TBR bumpers as well....added those to all my trucks. Well worth the money |
When is the first bash day coming!?

http://www.scriptasylum.com/rc_speed/index.html Try to gear for roughly 40mph and 30k rpm's. My 801xT is geared 16/48 if I remember correctly. Post up some pictures as well. Good luck, Nick |
What is the spur gear tooth count is it 48 or 52 for stock
|
also curious why there is more suspersion droop in rear than front i think my kyosho was the same way, is there a reason for this

Just wanted to update this thread a little bit and add to the action lately.
I haven't had much time to spend with any of my RC vehicles lately, but over the last week I started getting this one up and running again. This truggy has very little run time so far. I put a old battery in it and it fired right up the first time and it was all going good until one of the pins that holds the rear hub into place came loose. I have been having a problem getting these pins to stay in place since it was built. Here is a picture. Please let me know if I'm referring to any of these parts by the wrong name. http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps0fe197fa.jpg I thought I could find a metal spring clip to go around this and hold the pin into place. I ended up using a rubber gasket / seal that I had laying around the house. One of these, http://www.nbr-o-rings.com/sale-3142...chine-too.html Has anyone else had a problem like this before? Thanks, Nick |
Your fix should work well, Nick. Making a small flat on the cross pin where the setscrew engages it is a common fix for this issue as well(along with locktite on the setscrew of course).
|
What MMike said, you can also use some heat shrink to hold the pin in as you did with the O ring. If there is a clearance issue, which there most likely is not. The flat on the pin and Loctite on the setscrew is the way to go.
|
Thanks for the replies guys. Im not sure what setscrew you are refering to? The pin holds the hub, the part the wheel screws onto, in place there is nothing else holding it onto the driveshaft.
Maybe I am missing something. My D8T has a different design than this one and I think that one has a setscrew in it. Nick |
there should be a set screw in the center of the hub... same as the d8t.

Thanks I just looked that up myself. I'll take another look when I get home today to see if the screw is in there or I didn't have it at all.
Thanks for the help, Nick |
