V-Stretch drive shaft length for 50mm ext?
Hi folks. First post so go easy on me!
I've had a look around but I am struggling to find what size shaft I will need. I could mod and extend the current stock or if anyone knows compatible Cups and a dog bone I'll go that way. Any help much appreciated. Edit: Ok I bought some UE 6mm cups that apparently fit Maxx truck diffs....so just shafts now. |
I get the feeling the 50mm extensions is a bad buy! Looks like there are no shafts to fit. :(
Guess I'll have to extend a telescopic shaft. |
What length do you actually need?
|

THis is the longest dogbone that I am aware of. I use it with my UE monoblock. EDIT: but my chassis I'd also longer than stock. I believe it is slightly longer than a thunder chassis. |
I'm not 100% sure yet. Mike's site does not specify the length required. Logic states 50mm longer than the stock one but Traxxas don't seem to state the length of the stock shaft and until the V-Maxx part turns up I don't intend to strip the truck.
The longest 6mm bone I can find is HPI but 112mm. I think this maybe too short. Anything longer uses 8mm and I take it that will not fit on a stock E-Maxx diff? I have 6mm UE cups on the ways. |
our 132mm shaft is designed for a 32mm extension. Where are you getting 50mm extension?
|
From Mikes shop:
http://www.rc-monster.com/proddetail...ssis_Extension "35mm Extension weighs only 2.6 oz, while the 50mm weighs 3.2oz (including the skid - adds under 2oz total weight) and extends the wheelbase to approximately 14.5"(35mm) or 15.25"(50mm). Compatible with any Maxx vehicle that uses stock-style skids and bulks. Requires longer rear center drive-shaft". |
Stock transmission and diffs? Or center diff and something different in the rear? If stock, I would grab a Summit axle and use that.
|
Yeah stock Tranny and diffs. That was my backup plan if all else fails. The UE diff cups came and they are mighty nice too! 6mm jobbies. But with no bone they will have to go to the spares box.
I take it it's not easy to adjust a 8mmx143mm HPI Savage dog bone to fit? |
With the stock transmission, the Traxxas center cvd for the front is a direct fit. You will need around 158-160mm out back with the 50mm extension.
|
Thanks Mike. Can't seem to find any that size. Some reference to a OFNA shaft but no specifics. Then it's whether it would fit the E-Maxx output. I'll bodge some form of telescopic shaft. Luckily I only intend to run 4s so should hold up.
|
With 4s and the stock tranny and diffs, I think you could pretty easily get away with using one of the plastic sliders that go from diff to wheel.
|
I'm planning that! I'll post up pics when done.
|
Not sure if this would help, but there is a 166MM driveshaft with a CVD coupling on one end and a ball/crosspin on the other that is made by Tekno RC:

That's a good idea! Thanks.
|
Well it's together... Great quality parts again Mike. But the drive shaft idea is a fail. It just reaches. Buts makes the shaft very flimsy at the centre. I'm sure it will twist.
I can try and strengthen it with wooden dowel but the diameter change from spline to tube is quite dramatic compared to 1/10th shafts...I'll have a think. Maybe the cvd idea will work. |
Wiz, did you try the HPI Savage 142mm driveshaft?
|
No. Mike says I need 160mm.
|
The 142mm works with the 35mm extension, Captain.
|
I've got it working using a stock shaft and some wood and glue! I'll post pics tomorrow when I have access to a PC.
|
Why I'm asking is because the HPI shaft uses 8mm ball ends, and I'm not sure if my Spider diff cups are 6 or 8mm. I need to confirm this first.

RC Monster V-Maxx Chassis with V-Stretch 50mm Extension. Makes the truck look much more proportional and handle better too from my initial impressions. Size is in line with a Savage XL now.
To get a 160mm rear shaft that will fit stock diffs I had to get creative using the stock male center shaft and the female drive shaft for the wheels. Together they do meet but offer little contact and the connection feels weak. Even the 4s I run would twist the shafts. So I cut the male remainder off the drive shaft and glued and slotted these two pieces together on some wooden dowel. The dowel is cut and left in place. This has lead to a solid shaft. I have tested on high traction tarmac on 4s and it has held up so far... :) http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...psf4w9fg4t.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...pszycn9rbb.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...ps6wyqnyrw.jpg |
Truck is looking beastly, Wiz!
Captain - 8mm ball ends is the standard for 1/8 shafts, as well as the Maxx trucks. |
Thanks Monster!
Say, did my stuff ship yet? ;P |
Not yet, Al - working on it, though!
|
My drive shaft mod failed big time. The solution is to buy the 159mm HPI Apache dog bone with some UE diff cups. This dog bone is still a touch to short (5mm more req) and so I have put a Zip ties round each diff cup to limit the dog bones travel. It would never fall out but I did not like how far it could slide. :)

Why do I have the feeling that the shaft with such thickness and length might bend under pressure....
|
Don't be negative. It'll be reet on 4s. If not I'll moan on here. Haha.
|
Use a small piece of nitro fuel pipe inside the cups.
It holds in place and allows for flex. (Nitro stuff has some use) |
Thanks Arc1tk. Good idea.
|
The shaft will hold up fine - the force is a twisting force and not a bending force. :-)
|
Well it handled some 4s bashing well. Truck drives great too!

Well you know my technical literacy is not as good as yours, Mike...:P
Looking "savage" wiz! One big maxx! :) |
Haha. Thanks Captain. My Traxxas Slash looks like a HPI Blitz too. I'd don't intend to cross dress them. Just happens.
