LOOK! Nemesis trouble

Today one of my 9L's died on its second run!
I ran 16/66, Maxx tires, 14cells, and the temps were fine. Then all of a sudden the motor stalled and was really hot, 85°C.
The shaft is really hard to turn (had alot of play when it was new, one day ago) I think the magnet got loose from the shaft!!

This sucks big time. I contacted the seller.

Suggestions welcome!

Would there be a better motor, which also runs on 14 cells and my 9918?? I don't mind if it costs more than the Feigaos, but I would be verry happy if it would last a bit longer.

Man, I have to get this off my chest! I waited two months to get this setup and now it's dead after one and a half run! I'm dissapointed!

RC-Monster Mike 03.17.2005 11:04 AM

Sounds like a dislocated magnet to me as well. This may happen once in a while, but for the most part, these instances are few and far between (don't happen very often). I think you will find the Feigaos will typically last much longer. I offer the Lehner basic xl motors as well. These are backed by a 2 year warranty and have served me quite well in the past. They are a little smaller (about the size of a Fegao "s" motor), but are also a little more efficient and plenty powerful. The shafts are hardened 1/8" as well, so they hold up very well and are easy to find pinions for. Of course, there are many other motors to choose from as well, including the higher end lehners that are even more expensive, but also more efficient. They can also be soldered into two different configurations so they can act like two different motors.

sorry to hear about that happening bro but mine have served me well after some abuse.

Hmm, IŽll wait for the reply from the seller.
But I think I might get another Feigao nevertheless. I am verry happy with the performance on the one in my TwinForce.

I opened the 9L and saw what went wrong. You will never believe it. I never heard of something like this before.

IŽll make a damage report with pictures later on, gotta go now.

C ya early next week:)

HotnCold 03.20.2005 11:14 AM

How's that for a teaser - find out and let ya know next week..lol

THAT's why you should eat, sleep and s... with a camera in your hand.. To shoot these kind of moments, to share them with the rest of the curious world..

RC-Monster Mike 03.20.2005 02:35 PM

Well, we could do without the s... part, but you get the idea! :)

Nemesis Damage Report

Well guys, as you might have heard, one of my Feigao Nemesis 9L's let me down.
It must have been damaged when I got it. It died on its second run, only had one and a half set of packs thru it.
This motor has never seen WOT or fast acceleration, I was still playing around with the setup, and kept a close look on the temps and all.

On the second packs it suddenly stalled! I thought it must have thrown the shaft of the magnet.
I contacted the seller, and he told me to open it by applying some force on the shaft, to push the endbell out.

Okay, I pressed on the shaft, and it came out the other end without much resistance:

Well, I managed to open the endbell and saw the damage: A cracked magnet!

Yes, split in two!

These are two seriously strong magnets, I can tell you. I have never seen something like this before.

So, this motor is dead, no chance to fix this.

Guys, I took the pics right when I opened it. But I couldn't post them immediately because I have no computer at home, just my house-mate's laptop.

Anyhow, now it's here. Have a look and tell me what you think.

Serum 03.21.2005 04:32 AM

That looks nasty!

Can it be, that you did you gave the motor a WOT without any load? (it's not that i doubt you, don't get me wrong)

Dafni 03.21.2005 04:56 AM

As for reving the motor up without load, that's a no-no. I just got it to turn a few turns to see if it spins in the right direction. Nothing else. I would never WOT a motor without load.

And this one was special baby'ed, checked temps every few minutes, kept it in 1st gear, half throttle at the maximum, and very slow acceleration. I wanted to break in my Revo, LOL

HotnCold 03.21.2005 07:21 AM

Thats a first for me - Damn - thats a huge magnet for that to happen to....

Dafni 03.21.2005 08:31 AM

Thanks for fixing my thread, whoever has done it:D

Ja, HnC, that's what I thought! It must have been damaged when I got it. No hard hits from my part.

HotnCold 03.21.2005 08:39 AM

Your welcome.. That would seem like a mfg defect to me - ( im no expert by any means though ). I wounder what would make a magnet like that split ? - I couldnt split something that clean if i tried to - LOL

Dafni 03.21.2005 10:02 AM

I wonder what RC Monster Mike will say to this.

I can imagine a hair-fine crack from the factory.
You could also get such a smooth crack by heat shocks, I guess. (like in glas) But this is out of question here.
I blame it on a manufacturing fault.

FYI:
The material looks and feels like cast iron. It's an alloy which also consists of significant amounts of Neodymium. Which is a Rare-Earth-Metal, so called Lanthanide. Pure Nd would be sensitive to oxigen. (I'm a Lab-tech here at the University of Berne, Departement for Inorganic Chemistry, and I work in the field of Rare-Earth-Metals, so I know a bit about these metals)
The magnet also has some sort of coating. Maybe to stop it from corroding??

This magnet is dead indeed. No possible way of fixing. As it cracked it generated new pole-centers, and as I pulled it out of the can, one part flipped around. So now it's impossible to get them together again.

RC-Monster Mike 03.21.2005 10:22 AM

I have seen this once before. The same thing happened. It also happened almost immediately (new motor). I also assumed it was a cracked magnet from the factory. The material is very brittle and a small hairline crack could easily go unnoticed. I suppose it could have been dropped at some point as well, landing on the shaft and causing the damage. Overall, I have had very few failures, but occasionally one must slip through the cracks (no pun intended!:)).

Dafni 03.21.2005 10:27 AM

Okay, if it only happens, say, one time in several hundred motors, then I would be pretty mis-fortunate if it ever happens to me again, right? ;)

Fingers are crossed, anyway.

Right now the Revoxx runs on a dual brushed setup, can't wait for the new BL!

RC-Monster Mike 03.21.2005 04:43 PM

If it happens to you again, it would be fair to say that you are jinxed!

HotnCold 03.21.2005 04:55 PM

Have no fear - If it happens again to someone else on the forums - it'll happen to me - LOL

lipomax 03.21.2005 10:13 PM

Hey HotnCold, what's the in her bikini? Is that a can of beer? Is that a photo you took?

HotnCold 03.22.2005 07:44 AM

Yep - its a can of beer - And no i didnt take that pic - i could only have wished to be there to take a pic of that - That sums up what fishing is all about......:)

Serum 03.22.2005 09:36 AM

yeah, now i see..

She's FISHING!

HotnCold 03.22.2005 09:44 AM

If you stare at it for a few minutes - she is doing exactly that - LOL

Serum 03.22.2005 09:48 AM

Yeah, for some dark reason, i didn't really notice the fishinggear she was holding..

Thanks for the head up..

RC-Monster Mike 03.22.2005 10:23 AM

Hey, look at that! She IS fishing! :)

HotnCold 03.22.2005 12:12 PM

Anyone care for a beer???? - LOL
