Motor Question (Sound Clip)
When I release the throttle a weird noise occurs...is this normal?

That is very weird indeed! Does it run fine other than that tone (driving)?
|
I just noticed it yesterday after a full run...it seemed to do very great execept a lil hot on the motor cause of the 20/51 gearing. I chipped my spur gear so it won't be running for a few days.
I am worried cause my first setup (8xl/9920) basically smoked after 1 month and I just got this second setup last week. |
I would try and reprogram the esc.
|
I think it has a video game lodged in it.
Did you run over a games system without knowing? It is strange indeed. Does it do anything strange or just make the noise? |
Just tried it with no luck. Should I give it another run in a few days when my gear gets in or send it back to Mike for him to look at it? Sound is definitely coming from the motor and hope nothing inside is damaged. Perhaps, open both end bells?

Is there any play in the bearings (front-to-back or up-and-down)?
|
Yea, I'm with Leroy. I think you ran over Pong....
|
Brian - there is slight play front to back. Also, it rattles when I shake the motor

I'd be more concerned about the rattling personally. I'd send it back to Mike before you try prying off the endbell unless he says it's OK to do so. |
Thanks, the sound and rattle was coming from the slight play so I tapped the shaft forward a bit to stop it. I happen to damage the bearing cap in the process. Can I purchase this type of bearing separately? and if so where?
|
That, I can't say. I'm sure someone else will have the answer though...
|
Well the sound is still there after I plugged everything back up. No rattle since the shaft is in place now
|
No rattle, but the sound is still there. Hmm, I don't know, but I suspect the bearings. I'd send Mike an email. If you want to replace them yourself, make sure you get bearings rated for high speeds.
On a side note; how hard was it to pop the endbell off? Not that I plan to do it just for giggles, but if ever I need to replace the bearings, I'd like to know what I'm in for. And, how hard was it to pop back on? |
need a light tap on the shaft with a hammer and it came off and vice versa with putting it back on
|
The bearings are a rather uncommon 5x11x5mm size. The standard 5x11 bearings you might buy are only 4mm thick, instead of 5. In my motor I put in a 5x11x4, and some shims to take up the play, and it works somewhat decently.
|
I would run it cause if it works right and only makes noise. How can you fix it cause it is not broke?
|
Leroy, maybe thats why you have 5 controllers in the shop :p.

Do you have another motor to try? Just to try and positively isolate that its the motor and not the controller causing the motor to make noise. |

It is making a noise yes. The question is Is the motor making the noise or the esc the cause? :032: If it is working right how can you fix it. |
If every time you took your foot off of the gas in your new 1:1 car the horn honked. Would you consider it working right?
I wouldn't.... And I would expect the car dealer to fix it. |
Well if every time you lifted off the gas it applied the brake I would expect the brakes like to come on. I am curious if it does it with the gears on the motor or just free winding?
|
I agree. I think some investigation needs to be done to isolate the cause. If he has a diferent motor, I'd be interested to know what happens with that. Also, that motor on a diferent controller.
CHC is right, can you take the motor out of the truck and just run it on the bench and see if it still does it? |
My spur gear came in early so I took it out for a run. And you know what? No sound from motor with the gears on! For the bearing cap I just placed electric tape over the end bell to prevent dirt from entering. (is that ok?) I was really happy with the run today with temps at 150 motor and 115 esc.
Second run lasted only 5 minutes because I ran it into a cinder block around 10 mph and snapped the front skid plate and bulkhead. Good excuse to get the flm hybrid bulks and diff cups :) |
Good to hear its working!
|
First guy Ive met thats HAPPY when he crashes and breaks something... :dft012: :) :005:

I am happy to finally upgrade because I've been pondering over it for the last few weeks. The only thing I hate is that I can only get a few runs in before breaking something. This is my first BL setup and I'm not a good driver :(
Guess the only thing I really NEED now are arms & shock towers. What can I do to damage those parts? Everyone on this forum has nice setups and I'm anxious to soon have one of them |
That's great that it's not making that noise anymore! I wonder if it could just be an issue with the Quark and it detecting no load or something like that...
|
You said hybrid bulks and diff cups?? With the hybrids you need 1/8th scale gears.
|
Don't they make hybrid bulks for both 1/8 and standard maxx gears?
|
Ya, the ones for the 1/8 are hybrid and the normal gears are combo bulks.
|
The sound i hear sounds like a vibration from a worn bearing. When i raced slotcars i heard it a few times when the bushings were about to wear out. It only happened when not on load like yours does. I would look at getting a pair of bearings, just in case. Not sure how long you have, but not tring to worry you, just my experience. Never heard that from a bearing though
|
Another possibility, I noticed that my Mamba Max motor made a similar, but quieter sound without a pinion gear and with 30% drag brake when pulling some throttle then releasing the trigger.

WOT into a light pole or a 6 in curb for arms, towers, shocks, and bulkheads. I've recked em all at least once |
