E-crt

Hello,

Finished it today! Learned a hard lesson about hardned spurs so upgrades are already in order. I'll be hitting the track with it tomorrow. I'll post something after I see how it performs. The "road" test was very exciting.

killer! lipo or nimh? how many cells?

crazyjr 07.15.2006 01:01 PM

Looks like a lipo setup to me, maybe...4s 3700? Very nice truck MacII, looks like you got a lot of room on there

cemetery gates 07.15.2006 01:18 PM

looks cool, fine design help you out with that setup?

Gustav 07.15.2006 01:26 PM

Looks very neat and tidy,nice!

jameschatz 07.15.2006 02:44 PM

Looks good, did u cable tie the motor in there?

ALso get the chassis braces if you plan on doing fairly hard bashing ;)

Electric Dave 07.15.2006 03:31 PM

Thanks guys....

I'm running FMA Scorpions...two of them...making it 4s. They are only 3200's.

Fine Design inspired me to undertake the project. I bought the motor mount and battery brace from them. The layout is my own idea to balance the weight a bit. I was a bit nervous when I took a dremmel to my brand new CRT but I really think cutting up that radio tray opens up a world of layout options. It does get a bit more rats nesty when the LiPo's are in there but overall I think it's a clean layout. The UBEC is mounted on a little shelf I made out of an old wing...since the picture I added another piece of the wing under the rear driveshaft to hold down the motor wires. I doubt they can/would move but this way it's extra protection. I've also switched to a Fine Design Clutch Bell conversion until I can order some of those hardened pinions from Mike. The spur ate a standard pinion in one run.

I'm really itching to take it out...tomorrow AM...I can't wait. Of course with two more weeks on our points series I hope I can adjust to the changes quickly. Something tells me this truck will be everything my E-LSP was and then some...

I'll report in after the race tomorrow.

Hardened steel pinions and hardened steel spur gears aren't such a great idea i don't think, it didnt work for me, it was eating my pinion too.

Electric Dave 07.15.2006 04:20 PM

So what did you do?

Edit - actually, if Hardened Pinions and Spurs are not a good idea, how do Nitro trucks work? I mean, that's what they are using right?

Anyone out there using RC-Monster Hardened Pinions mated to a Nitro Steel Spur and having a problem with pinions getting damaged?

Darren 07.15.2006 04:56 PM

Yeah Mac, me :) .

I got a kyosho 46t spur gear from Mike (It's plastic)

I dunno how nitro gets away with it actually.

cemetery gates 07.15.2006 05:27 PM

For a 4s lipo what motor and controller are you running?

coolhandcountry 07.15.2006 07:07 PM

Nitro don't have the same umph as electric.
That is why it holds up better.

BTW
Nice conversion.

Mike.L 07.15.2006 09:56 PM

that chassis has a lot of room theres space between everything, looks pritty balenced out to me.

I have a Schulze 18.97 and the motor is an XLT-1 from Fine Design, similar to an 8XL.

Yeah...I guess the whole clutch thing takes some of the brunt off for Nitro...

Have you run the hardened pinions with a steel spur? How long do they last together under race conditions?

I suppose my next question is, for years I've been running brushless with a plastic spur. On my E-Maxx, I LOCKED the slipper and on my E-LSP there was no slipper, how did that plastic spur handle it when two metal gears can't? I don't know if I can use a plastic spur, the CRT spur is the center diff cap...hope those pinions will hold up...

squeeforever 07.16.2006 02:09 AM

Yea, you should be able to use the Kyosho spur.

Serum 07.16.2006 03:59 AM

Good thing you got a fan on that 18.97, that fan can't be big enough to blow away the smoke once it goes.. :)

It looks like a light setup to me!

monel_funkawitz 07.16.2006 07:21 AM

If the gear lash is set correctly, it should not eat up a pinion in one run. I'd check the lash on the pinion, and also see if maybe you motor is flexing under load, causing the pinion to engage the spur at a angle.

I run combinations like this all the time. I use hardened/hardened and aluminum/hardened, or aluminum/aluminum on my RC pullers. If one of my tractors can pull 800lbs, I'm sure your CRT will hold up. Proper engagement of the gears is essential though.

squeeforever 07.16.2006 04:43 PM

Actually, without a hardened pinion, they won't last long at all. no hardened on hardened isn't a good idea and will NOT last. Plastic spur is cheaper and better. Especially if one of them goes, it will be alot cheaper and alot easier to replace...

Electric Dave 07.17.2006 08:42 AM

Just thought I'd update how things went yesterday at the track...the E-CRT is amazing. I'd say I shaved 2 seconds off my lap times...went from 23s & 24s to 21s & 22s...My gearing however was WAY off. It was far too fast and it caused me to go into thermal shut down EVERY single race. Amazingly I was so blazing fast while running that I still won them all anyway! (it was a very light day at the track...if the usual guys were there I doubt I could stop for 15 -20 seconds and still win) Anyway I'm off to the RC-Monster store to purchase some tiny pinions and hopefully go a full 5 mins without thermalling...We don't run with the Nitro Truggies but my lap times were better than ALL but one of them (the track owner - who is an amzaing racer). We have an AMB which estimates your finish time, and before the thermal I was on a 14 lap pace, only one truggy got to a 14 lap pace. All in all I'd say it's totally competitive with Nitro for the 5 mins...

FWIW, the 14 tooth modified clutch bell pinion I used survived the spur...I'm hopeful that the hardend pinions Mike has will stand up to the abuse - at least for 5-7 race days...if I can get that much life out of one, I'd be very happy.

Mac, why not try a Kyosho 46 or 44T spur?? They will probably bolt right up.

Electric Dave 07.17.2006 10:36 AM

I'm willing to try anything - got a part number? I just don't see how it will fit on this diff...the CRT spur is the cap for the diff, the bearing sits on the neck of the spur... perhaps the hot setup is to use a plastic spur diff - scrapping the CRT diff altogther.

coolhandcountry 07.17.2006 10:50 AM

the koyosho is the end cap as well. Mike has them in the store.

Electric Dave 07.17.2006 04:47 PM

Ratz...just purchased $50 of pinions...ok...so that looks like an option if this doesn't fly only one question...46 teeth is very small, especially considering that with 62/14 I was WAY over geared. Since 46/11 is still taller yet than what I was running, are there other options with more teeth that can cap the diff?

Thanks guys.

pb4ugo 07.17.2006 05:21 PM

I've seen pinions down to 9 teeth. That will be lower than you were running.

If you still need more gear you can switch the diff ring and pinion to the hot bodies LSP units.

squeeforever 07.17.2006 08:27 PM

Yea, if you really need a low gear ratio, Tower Hobbies has non-hardened 9 tooth 5mm bore pinions.

coolhandcountry 07.18.2006 08:43 AM

Mike made an adapter for another person on the forum. If you want one He could hook you up as well. Tower has a 65 tooth mod 1 gear with a little enlargeing of the center hole it will bolt right up to a center ofna diff. That would expande your horizon to. The hb truggy diffs are a solution to. The 4.3 gearing to the 3.31 gearing you have now.

Electric Dave 07.18.2006 09:09 AM

Sounds great...do you know the tower item? Can't hurt to have alterantive solutions...

Thanks!

squeeforever 07.18.2006 10:21 AM

Which one? The spur Leroy was talking about or the pinion?

Electric Dave 07.18.2006 11:24 AM

Spur...sorry...

coolhandcountry 07.18.2006 11:27 AM

I got it in the wish list. I get it and send it pm.

Who makes the 9T 5mm bore pinion? I have searched Tower and can't seem to find it.

coolhandcountry 07.19.2006 08:38 AM

If you check with mike he can get them as well. The name of the gear is century.
They are well and nice pinions. The 9 tooth is very small. I got a few to try out and see.
It is hard to find on the search. I got them in my wish list. I find them and pm the site.

Serum 07.19.2006 11:01 AM

search for 9T and it shows up

pb4ugo 07.19.2006 01:03 PM

Here it is:
LXMGY1 Century Motor Gear 9T 5mm 1.0 Module

coolhandcountry 07.19.2006 01:34 PM

I searched for module 1.0 . It came up with all the pinions from 9 to 14.

giftacrylic 07.19.2006 04:55 PM

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

strodedawg 07.20.2006 02:02 PM

so, the hotbodies lsp ring and pinions are interchangeable with the crt's ring and pinion?

cart213 08.08.2006 09:55 PM

Mac, could you post a close-up photo of the Fine Design motor mount? How do you adjust gear mesh with that mount?

squeeforever 08.08.2006 11:16 PM

Cart123, those are just motor holders for a boat. BK sells them and I'm pretty sure Mike can get them.
