Another Brushless ESC?

Hey, have you guys seen or heard anything about the Tekin R1 Pro ESC? Here's a link:

http://www.teamtekin.com/R1%20and%20R1%20Pro.asp

The R1 Pro says it will handle 5s lipos. I have no idea on how many amps it's set up to handle, and I don't even know if it's on the market yet. Just FYI.

jollyjumper 02.16.2007 05:59 PM

there was a tread on it couple weeks ago.
they will also make some motors.
and maybe even a 1/8th setup.
i saw that somewhere on their site once.

Sower 02.16.2007 08:28 PM

Oh. Oops. :002:

Sower 02.20.2007 03:09 PM

Here's an update I just got from Tekin. Sounds pretty good to me. I'll just copyclip their response for you guys:

Rob,

The R1 series ESCs are not yet on the market. We are hoping for a middle of March release date and the ESCs should sell for $160 for the R1 and $210 for the R1-Pro. Combo systems (ESC and motor) should sell for $235 for the R1 and $260 for the R1-Pro.

As for amps, the R1 can handle 104amps Continuous per phase
(3 phases total) and 1152amps Peak per phase.

The R1-Pro will handle 208amps Continuous per phase and 2304amps Peak per phase.

As per motor limit, you can use any turn or kV motor you wish as long as it is 36mm or smaller. The R1-MT is designed to handle the longer can motors which will be used in 1/8 scale buggies and monster trucks.

For a Brushless only use, the R1 series will be fine for your application. Having Brushed/Brushless modes is only a difference in software and does not affect size of the unit.
If you are planning to go 5s LiPo, the R1-MT cis designed to handle it as long as you use a receiver pack (the BEC that powers the servo cannot handle the 5s.) If you are planning on an 1/8 scale application with 5s, the R1-MT will be perfect for what you're looking for.

Looks like we might have an alternative to the Quark 125 in the next month or so. :027:

jollyjumper 02.20.2007 04:12 PM

sower, thanks for the info, i always tought they had a esc and/or combo for us in the pipeline.
do you know anything about 1/8th scale suited motor from tekin?
thanks, mike.

Sower 02.20.2007 04:16 PM

Nope. Hopefully they'll give more info on that soon. Not sure it will matter much for me though. I'm pretty set on the Lehner. Well, actually if this ESC works with the Neu, I might go that direction. I think I'll check with them.

jollyjumper 02.20.2007 04:29 PM

ok, thanks sower.
i just mailed them to.
here's the link to the product page: http://temp.teamtekin.com/r1mt.html
will mike do this system?
thanks.

Sower 02.20.2007 04:31 PM

Yeah, I just sent a few more questions too. The only limiting factor I see in the prelim info is the size of the motor at 36mm. That's 1.4 inch diameter and smaller than the 1.56" of the Neu 1515. Seems like a lot of power (200 amps) to be limited by the diameter of the motor. Doesn't make sense to me.

BrianG 02.20.2007 04:52 PM

The price points and specs sound similar to the MM and most likely the MMM. And the release date sounds about right for the MMM as well. Hmmm.

glassdoctor 02.20.2007 06:06 PM

A little ironic don't you think? It will be interesting to see what plays out here.

Tell you what... if the Tekin MT hits the market before the MMM and looks to be the real deal... I won't feel bad dumping CC. It's too bad CC isn't more committed to the Mambas.. they basicly say they have been too busy to get to it, if you read betweeen the lines.

Dafni 02.20.2007 06:13 PM

Tell you what, the small tekin motors, under their black sticker, they are green!

glassdoctor 02.20.2007 06:22 PM

I have heard/seen that before... anyone have a picture to verify?

I noticed the latest Rage motors are different... with some anno and beveled edge.. definitely different than a M25 now.

The Tekin/Castle rumors are hotly contested by certain people.

wallot 02.20.2007 06:25 PM

the pro version 5S lipo but only 14cell nimh thats not much

but at least some competition

Dafni 02.20.2007 06:29 PM

You can have my word on it, Glassdoctor. The last small Tekin I had in my hands was green under the sticker. It also had the white/red/black wires. Looked exactly like a M25. And they had the same KV choices as well. This was in September 06. And no, I don't have pics to prove it. But why should I tell you stories here?

Probably doesn't mean much, though. They just have their motors made at the same compeny in asia.

glassdoctor 02.20.2007 07:06 PM

That's cool.. I believe you. It's some other people I would have to convince.

Rumors are that CC makes the Tekin stuff... IMO it's not quite like that but I can believe that Tekin has had some help from CC.

Anyone who really knows isn't talking of course. But it's quite interesting....

Bomb-Proof 02.20.2007 07:18 PM

I am A Tekin fan for sure, always have been pleased with their products. If this ESC comes out, it will be huge for the industry IMO. Alot of old racers will be willing to try A Tekin brushless system where they wouldnt any other brand. It may help the MT/buggy classes pick up.

jnev 02.20.2007 07:25 PM

I thought it was pretty ironic, how the MMM and tekin are scheduled to coem out at the same time about. Now, if they actually come out when they are supposed to, (I doubt it), then I'll have even mroe options to choose from for my buggy conversion. Hmmm... Tough choice, eh?

jhautz 02.20.2007 08:03 PM

Did I miss it in here somewhere? I see that the R1 and R1-Pro iare due in March. But when is the R1-MT due out?

This is indeed good news. However, Im a little concernend that these controllers dont apear to have heatsink, or surface that a fan would do any good either. How can it possibly handle 200+ amps contunuous on 5s with no heatsink. Are they using magic 100% efficient FETs?

Sweet.

I did get another update from them. Here's what they said:

"It also looks as if the R1 and R1 Pro will come out near the end of March and the R1MT shortly after."

"We have tested or ESC with the Trinity motor (can't remember exactly which one,) the Castle motors and some prototypes we're looking into. We havent picked up any Lehner motors, but it sounds as though we should. The 1/8 scale motor we want to release is just a longer can version of the 1/10 scales. I'll get some more info from the prez on them"

I'm still waiting to see if any more info comes about. Since I'm in Boise, Idaho I think they might be responding to my e-mail fairly quick. I've seen these guys doing testing at our track since they're based in McCall (about 2 hours away). Hopefully they will continue with the great response.

Hope that info helps you guys.

jnev 02.20.2007 08:26 PM

Very cool. I am mainly looking forward for the R1MT. :027:

Sower 02.20.2007 08:27 PM

Well, we'll see if it actually makes the end of March date. And if it does, will the MMM be at the same time? If CC is much later, they will loose a huge part of the market and potential long term customers.

gixxer 02.20.2007 09:11 PM

that is great news. I knew they were doing the r1 and r1 pro but never heard anything about a mt version. If they get it out around april that would be perfect to start the new outdoor season.

glassdoctor 02.20.2007 11:02 PM

The MT has been one of those "well get to that once the regular ones are done" thing.... just like CC said about the Mambas. Will be funny if a year after the MM we are still waiting on the MMM but Tekin already has the MT.

Another thing that sounds suspiciously CC-like is what that quote just said about the MT.... appears as if the MT motor is undecided or at least untested. That's the deal at CC tooo. Hmmmmm

BrianG 02.20.2007 11:41 PM

Maybe they're waiting to see what motor CC is gonna use and then just use the same thing. Cuts R&D costs. :)

jhautz 02.21.2007 12:22 AM

I know many have said this about the MMM but I think it applies in this case too... Forget the motor!!! Just give us the ESC!!!

There are plenty of motor options. Thats not the problem.

Bomb-Proof 02.21.2007 02:06 PM

Exactly, we could all care less about the motor. I have a $300 pletty sitting here and not gunna run whatever they choose to be a universal motor. With no heatsink, I am sure the pletties and nues will liquify the case at 5s.

jollyjumper 02.21.2007 02:14 PM

i think the r1-mt will have a big heatsink, the r1-pro is for touring cars and other 10th scale cars.
r1-mt will be good i think.

jhautz 02.21.2007 02:39 PM

We can only hope you are right.

jollyjumper 02.21.2007 02:41 PM

yeah, if it doesnt have a big heatsink it will suck.

jollyjumper 02.21.2007 03:51 PM

just got e-mail from team tekin:
Quote:

I do not have a lot of info yet. I do know that it is going to have about
40+ fets and we are building this big enough to handle up to some of the
1/8th scale electric stuff that we are going to be testing.

jhautz 02.21.2007 08:18 PM

If they dont even know what its going to look like yet what are the odds that it will be out by Spring or ''shortly after'' the R1 and R1-Pro is released.

Define shorty... 2008?????? :019:

Bomb-Proof 02.21.2007 08:21 PM

March 09.

jollyjumper 02.22.2007 06:49 AM

i'd think so aswell.:mad:1

Dafni 02.22.2007 07:15 AM

Oh the suspense!

Definitely sounds like we'll have to wait a loooong bit. ".... that we are going to be testing" Come on, if testing has not even started yet, lord knows when it will be out.

Procharged5.0 02.22.2007 11:06 AM

I'm sure Tekin had some engineering help.
