Torsen Diff with BL power
After all this stuff about people using 1/8 scale diffs in the Maxx's (and soon Revo's) I can't help but to notice that we can use Torsen diffs as well, right?
They are hefty at ~120 bucks each, but I can just imagine the performance increase they may offer. Anyone have any comments? Anyone use a torsen diff? I think it would be awesome and it may just prompt me to get the Hybrid bulks for my G2R for just this reason. I'm only worried that they may not hold up to BL power (can anyone comment on that?). |
they wont, someone here has and they dont
|
What about them did that person not like? Did they use them in the front and/or rear, or the center? Do you have a link to a post in which they expressed their opinion? I've been interested in these as well, but the price has kept me away.
|
Torsen their nice but you can't tune them.
|
idk wwho said it, there was a topic about this a lil while ago and someone said that... idk where it was tho
|
But said what?
So far, your posts have just been "they won't" and "someone said that" That really doesn't tell us much lol... :p |
well if i knew id tell u lol..... i dont remeber this junk, shearch for Torsen Diff and see what u find
|
This may help a little. The 1st link are the search results, and the 2nd one is one of the topics that I think will be useful.

I already serached :) Thanks anyway though.
I'm just curious if they would hold up to BL power/torque. It would be hard on the wallet to blow a $100+ diff. |
I knwo what you mean BP. It is alays better to find the info beforehand, then experementing on something you are unsure about whether it will work or not.
|
it's UE who says they WILL break, that is with the mt tires. not just BL.
so if a nitro mt breaks them, a BL will for shure. but you can always try and prove UE wrong?!? |
Yea, well, the way UE strengthens their trucks...you wonder how they drive them...
I run pretty much a stock G2R (only upgrades are ones that reduce weight). |
It was Dafni who tried it in a savage he build for someone. It lasted less than 5 minutes iirc..
If you look at the threads jollyjumper started, (yeah, all of them..:p ) you'll see a torsen diff made by an Italian company, for MT's and buggies. I guess that one will last a bit longer. The torsen diffs can handle a certain amount of torque. (a good one is torque sensing) but they are not unlimited in torque. If this level is reached, the differences will increas in rpm (from front to rear) and since the diff is protesting as hard as it can, it will wear rather fast. |
I wonder be using it as a center diff - I will be using it as a front or rear diff (right now I'm thinking just front).
If being used a center diff I can see how it would wear quickly, but up front I don't really see why. |
Since the torque at the wheels is about 4 times as high than with a center...
|
if you only use a center torsen or lcd your truck will always power its rear wheels more then the front wheels.
it will therefore always break loose. setup with torsen diffs are always either only the front, or both front and center. the bbf-models diff i made a tread about are used either: front and center or, front, center and rear. but, you need different setup on the diff. you need a looser rear diff, it needs to work more, if u understand what i mean. hope this helps somewhat. rene, you're funny |
not even trying to! Arh, okay... A bit..
|
yeh i get what u mean, when u turn it would be more twards a locked diff so the wheels would be spinning like the should be to drive correct... i understand that
is that right? |
daniel tried kyosho TCD gears in a savage.
the savage ate them in 5 minutes.:002: |
with only a center torsen diff would be like drivin RWD on power.
|
this is why you would need a front and center, and not only a center;
If one front wheel is coming from the ground, all the energy goes to that wheel, and grip is lost. the center torsen would try to prevent that, but it is turning at a higher RPM already. if the front wheels are both turning in about the same energy, the largest amount of energy isn't going thru the centerdiff anymore, but can be translated into acceleration, without overloading the centerdiff. |
I'm going to try No Center diff with a front torsen. The way I drive I wont be benefi5ted much by the center diff.

A center diff is going to be activating the "Torsen" properties and sending power to the rear wheels 99% of the time. With a front torsen diff, this will mostly happen only during turning, and even so torque is not much at all. |
Hi,
I have a kyosho TCD diff innards in a normal savage diff case (if I remember correctly) in the front of my savage. I installed it during my initial conversion at least a year ago. So far it is still holding up though i did not notice any advantage using it over the conventional diff. :o & I don't drive the truck that often. Regards, Joe Ling PS : learnt about TCD in a savage diff here : http://www.savage-central.com/module...=asc&start=120 |
I went way overboard and did Torsen diff front, center, and back in my Inferno 7.5 BL. I know that recommendations were to not do the back wheels, but I had to find out for myself. Having the Torsen in the front and center is awesome, but I am seeing how much of a pain the rear one is, I can't kick out the rear wheels any more on any surface during a turn.
The effect of hitting the throttle during a turn it that it totally straightens the car out and the car wants to go in the direction that it is pointing. I am considering putting a regular diff back in the rear wheels so I can get a little kick around turns, since now all I can do is let the car drift through a turn completely before being able to go WOT. The benefit I have found though is that the acceleration is rocket fast, there is zero wheel spin when I nail the throttle. I guess there is always a trade-off. I haven't had any problem with advanced wear on the diffs after bashing them very hard for almost 6 months. I do follow the instructions of lubing the diffs after every 2 - 4 hours of runtime. I was thinking of taking that Torsen from rear and putting it in the front of my LST2 BL, but reading what I am here about trucks I might hesitate as I have that running great on standard diffs with oil 20K front/ 40K rear. Anyway - sorry, I got into a rambling post there - just trying to share my experiences as I didn't have much to go on when I made my purchase. I got mine from amainhobbies.com and they were a bit pricey. I have found after the fact the www.rcmart.com sells them for $75.90 each. |
