Post your Paint!

I got an airbrush and airbrush compressor for Xmas and I finally got around to painting a body. I just thought I'd share with you all. I'm actually rather proud of myself. First paint job that wasn't a rattle can job.

I've had this body sitting around here in the bag for a year or more and just never got around to painting it. I chose to do a body for my basher Emaxx cuz I figured it probably wouldn't turn out that good on my first try, but it wouldn't matter cuz I'd just tear it up anyway.

Anyhow It turned out better than I thought it would. So I thought I would snap a couple pics before I take it out and tear it up this weekend. A few little flaws as usual. I just don't have the patience to wait long enough in between coats/colors and I always mess something up :002:

Them guys who paint those masterpieces are seriuosly skilled. This painting stuff is gonna take some practice just to get to be halfway decent.

Anyone else got a paint job they want to share...

This was my first ever airbrush RC body. Been constantly improving since, painting almost every day now.
I paint on paper and lexan sheets mostly, re-discovered the artist side in me. I like to do small graffiti style pictures, or trying to let stuff look as if it were real. I love airbrushing. I can see me quitting wrenching and machining in favour for painting. It all depends if we can build a track this summer... no track = no fun in RC = sell stuff = lots of money for paint!

Nice work DAF !! Look really nice. You must have painted something before this or you have a natrual gift. It looks perfect. I could spend a week on a paint job and not have it turn out that good. And BTW: As far as I'm concerned some of the trucks that you built are art. So you aren't just dicovering your artist side. We have all seen it all along.

jhautz 04.04.2007 11:15 AM

DAF,

What are you using to mask? I used the liquid mask stuff and it worked OK. Next time I will use 2 coats of it though. I didnt put it on thick enough in some spots and it was PITA to get it off in those thin areas.

Dafni 04.04.2007 11:39 AM

Yeah, liquid mask only works in thick layers. If it's too thin it's a pain to peel, as you know now.
Do you spray or brush the LMF?? Either way, use 3 thick coats and you should be fine.

Thank you for the kind words. Yes, I have practiced on lexan sheets and paper before, as this is my true passion as I said. Actually designs like this are not hard, it's all about the masking. For me the real challenge is on paper, to paint, say, an apple for example, to have it look as if it were a picture.
I always appreciated art, but somehow got distracted from it in the last couple of years. Now it seems as if RC has lead me back to my real "passion". I can hardly put the pen down these days.
As for airbrushing, I keep practicing my freehand skills. I would not say I'm a talent or anything like that, as I realy can't compare to the pros, but I love to paint, and I keep on improving. I don't show my stuff around much, but whenever someone comes over and has a look on my work, they want me to paint their real car, mobile phone or whatever. I take this as a good sign.

I have been not bad with rattle cans, on walls and stuff, and now the airbrush opens up new dimensions for me. I just love it.

I keep thinking about trying to sell some body shells and stuff, but I want to build up my gallery before I go public.

Thank you
Daf

Thank you very much Jeff. I appreciate your comment. Words like this keep me going.

As for spending a week... this body was done in one night... one long night! I think I was up until 4 that night :) Had it LMed the day before.

The paint sceme looks nice man. Colors go well together. Pretty good for a first time.
I'm not too crazy about the shape of the body, though. But that has nothing to do with the paint.

jhautz 04.04.2007 11:48 AM

I brushed it on.

What do you use to spray it? Not your airbrush??? Seems like it would be kinda thick to spray. With the brush its kinda hard to get an even coat. If I can figure out how to spray it I will do that next time.

Thanks man.... Yea the body isnt my favorite either. But already I had it, so I figured Id paint it. Like I said... Just a basher body.

I'm gonna do a body for my 1/8 buggy next. I have one here for the Revo too. Just gotta decide what I want them to look like.

Dafni 04.04.2007 11:54 AM

Anything above a 0.5mm nozzle should be fine. You can thin it with water.
I am thinking about buying a big spray gun, like the guys use to spray truck bed liner and stuff.

Here's a nice tip for you: Get a foam brush (from Walmart I heard) to brush it on. Wash it with cold water... it might still get hard and messed up after a few bodies, but for less than one dollar per brush it's not bad.
If you brush it on, don't worry too much about getting every coat super even, rather put an extra coat on.
And yeah, let it dry overnight before you peel, or even 2 days if you still have white spots. Half an hour between coats is fine.
Best LMF I ever tried is this Bob Dively stuff, btw.

Hope this helps

That's the hard part :) And I have to keep in mind that it's still RC. i.e. it will get beaten up rather quick. So nothing too fancy.

jhautz 04.04.2007 12:00 PM

Sweet Dicky.... Looks nice.

Good poses for the trucks too. I like the one by the lake.

Procharged5.0 04.04.2007 12:04 PM

The foam brushes are cheap. Like .30 - .50 cents each.

As for spraying it on via airbrush or gun i recommend buying a "detail" gun from harbor freight. They are cheap ($15-$25 us) and will spray heavier fluids. They also sell full sized spray guns for heavy fluids and cost about the same but the quart sized cup is HUGE for spraying masking liquid.

Bob Divley you say... Thats what I used just cuz thats what the LHS had in stock. Musta just got lucky. Or the LHS has a painter there that knows whats what.

I found a blast with a hair dryer will dramatically speed the drying process.

Thanks! Me too. The lake pics are the most current. Taken on 4-1-07. The parking lot pics were taken in early feb. when it was still 98% stock. the only stock parts left now are the tranny case, rx, evx, slipper and titans. it will stay that way until around x-mas.

Serum,

The third pic looks pretty nice. (not that the other two don't mind you.)

What body is it?

jhautz 04.04.2007 12:34 PM

I like the red and white one serum. Looks clean and simple.

Nice work with the rattle can!

That's a Muscle 2.0 of proline Hank. Too bad it only fitts a non-extended vehicle..

Got some other bodies as well, but these are made by Sebairbrush. One has an RC-monster logo on it..

That gunmetal/blue/silver are my favourites to be honest.. Some red and white give it a more racer look..

One of my personal favourites is this;

made by a Dutch guy.

Procharged5.0 04.04.2007 12:46 PM

Nice!

The symmetrical pair concept is cool!

Serum 04.04.2007 12:57 PM

Yeah, it looks sweet IMO..

Here is a sebairbrush body i've got.

(it's got the UE Supermaxx logo on the hood)

The RC Monster Logo body I did was pretty neat actually. They are all internal for the most part. I have a really good color printer! LOL, and a little finess, an whalla! Graphics from RC Monster!

Procharged5.0 04.04.2007 01:18 PM

I plan on doing something similar.

We have a really nice color laser printer here at work.

Too bad the sebairbrush site is down.. he did some cool stuff on a 50's chevy.. He made it look like it was put together from shred.. About every panel on the car was made a different color.. Really neat.
