BL savage info? newb to large brushless

i was going to plunck 600 olus dollars to get my e-maxx running again but i decided that my savage was an easier way to go. so now comes were you guys come in. i need to knw what i should run that is realiable and wont thermal in a couple of seconds. i want to get the castle creation mamba max and plan to run 12-14 cells in my truck until i can go lipoly. im going to keep the reverse 2 speed and brakes from the stock truck. i want to know what xl motor to use as those are the ones i see about in these trucks. also any other things that i should get. for now i want to get the system in there and then later up grade it with lighter tires and whaty not. it is all stock except for the reverse. i want to run in the vicinity of 35-40 mph tops and would like to be able to use it in the sand as i frequent the dunes often. so any help would be great andi want to be able to get all the stuff from rc-monster. thansk alot and sorry if this question has been asked countless times as i want a good performing truck. thanks again

hey could i get some help i already have a bk 9920 controller and have been thinking an 8xl motor with 14 cells. how fast? runtimes? heat issues? would i have with this combo been reading on here all night and thats what ive came up with thanks in advance for any help and who do i need to contact to get a motor mount for it also what should i do for battery mounts

HERE IS THE ESC I BOUGHT

savagehaley14 05.19.2007 11:42 PM

this is a cool new proline body that came out tonight im gonna get one after the brushless conversion.;)

BL_maxx 05.20.2007 12:11 AM

well kershaw design has a nice one thats the one im going to get but im going to make another prototype one that is a little lower more beefier. but for 35 bux you cant beat it. so far i have heard if by the setup you aere going to use that it is a good one. if you use the stock 2 speed with reverse and mechanical brake it wont heat up or thermal as it is called; well thats what i have heard. i might go with a 7xl but not sure if it will heat up bad because i got a gearing chart and it said with that motor on 14 cells would go about 42mph. but i need somemore research to do. an 8xl would be maybe in the vicinity about mid to high 30 with 14 cells.and the battery mounts kershaw design has a complete kit for brushless conversions that includes them, but ussually people just make them to fit there battery configuration and what they use like mechanical brakes and such. here is the page check it out http://home.comcast.net/~milemarkers/index.html . hopefully this helped. and that is a cool body i wanted to get it for my maxx so i could use my titan body on my maxx but im going to sell the maxx instead.

savagehaley14 05.20.2007 02:14 AM

thanks for the help my savage will be all black after the conversion ill post pics here when im done i might run either a 7xl with 14 cells or the 8xl with 16 cells ill ask around:dft003:

BrianG 05.20.2007 12:30 PM

Everyone here will tell you that running higher voltage on a higher-turn motor will be better. I'd go with the 8XL and 16 cells...

savagehaley14 05.20.2007 12:54 PM

what gearing should i run and can someone show me a link to the wanderer 8xl motor thats what showed up when i used the motor calculator and the bk warrior 9920 should be good for the motor and batts (8xl,16cells)

Serum 05.20.2007 03:16 PM

I thought you wanted to use 14 cells? However; i did use the 8XL on 16 cells in my savage; i liked it, but it ran rather hot; i needed a fan on the 9920 and the motor to keep it cool.

It is possible; just use fans.

Yeah, I've been meaning to change that a little. The program assumes a 40krpm "sweet spot", but ~35k rpm seems to be a little better.

It will work, as Serum said, just run a tad hot.

And, this is the link to the Wanderers.

savagehaley14 05.20.2007 06:54 PM

so i should run an 8xl with 14 cells

BrianG 05.20.2007 07:39 PM

Yes, 8XL on 14 cells is just right. If you want to go to 16 cells, get the 9XL. You should get better runtime on the 9XL/16 cells due to the reduced current.

savagehaley14 05.21.2007 03:14 PM

is stock gearing good

BL_maxx 05.22.2007 11:49 AM

i just realized can the mamba handle 14 cells with out blowing up???? i didnt take this into consideration as i see it has a twelve cell limit. could i pull it off in 14cell setup?

savagehaley14 05.22.2007 09:07 PM

im gonna say no where its only rated at 12 cells maybe if you use fans but im not sure

savagehaley14 05.22.2007 09:08 PM

also how fast will my savage be with the 14 cells and 8xl

savagehaley14 05.22.2007 09:25 PM

does the bk warrior 9920 have a built in ubec(voltage regulator)

BrianG 05.22.2007 09:27 PM

Yes, it does, but is linear. Anything over 2s/6cells, use a UBEC. Some will say 3s/9cells is ok, but I wouldn't...

Serum 05.23.2007 01:32 AM

You are better off with a separate UBEC.

BL_maxx 05.23.2007 10:06 PM

so then the mamaba isnt a good idea with 14 cells dang it. cuz i have heard that the mamba is superior to the bk or are those false words? man then i can only run twelve cells? well i gues i will see if i can gear down a bit then.

BrianG 05.23.2007 10:08 PM

14 cells is starting to push it a little voltage-wise, but should run ok. But, you HAVE to disable the built-in BEC and use a switching BEC instead.

BL_maxx 05.24.2007 02:09 AM

well i was planning to get a UBEC because of the simplicity of it and less running hardware and i know that i do have to chop the red wire from the esc connecter that goes to the rx? other then that should i put a fan on it? to kep it cooler? well thanx alot brianG yopu have helped me get over this lettle "bump"as you say.

savagehaley14 06.05.2007 10:28 PM

so how fast will the sav x go with the 14 cell and 8xl and are there any good chargers i should think about buying and what batts should i get thanks

savagehaley14 06.05.2007 10:35 PM

could i run 6s lipo with the 8xl and 9920 bk esc there is a video on the internet of a savage like this and it looks crazy fast

well a charger i would buy and am going to buy is the super brain 989. it charges 1-8 lipo but you need the balancer and 1-25 nimh/nicad cells and it cost 132.99 and has a whole mess more featuresas well like a ten amp power supply to name one. go check it out at towerhobbies.com you can also find other chargers that you might like.

savagehaley14 06.07.2007 10:48 PM

i was thinking the 989 too just wondering if anyones had any experience with anything thanks for the help evryone so far

savagehaley14 06.07.2007 10:50 PM

what mAh rating should i use and does anyone have any battery recomendations

BL_maxx 06.12.2007 08:40 PM

you can get some ib 4200 7 cells from spec point batteries for 115.95 and there matched and look really nice plus i ordered a set for my maxx and lots of people say they are awsome, but if you ask some one else they might tell you to go lipo with maybe a 5s with 8000mah due to the weight reduction and higher power.

savagehaley14 06.14.2007 03:49 PM

whats the website

here it is http://www.specpointbatteries.com/ . lots of people on the traxxas forums for the e-maxx have these and they rave about the batteries he builds and he can put them in various configurations. and ythey are the cheapest in price for the ib 4200 7 cell packs. just charge them and follow his instructions on how to use the batteries and you wont have problems.

i had another question i wanted to go with a 9xl so i could use it in my e-maxx as well. is this a good motor for savage use? i will go higher in cells when i get my new charger but for now its going in my e-maxx with 14 cell ib 4200 from spc. thanks

jnev 06.14.2007 04:55 PM

The 9xl is a good motor, but there are plenty of motors that are a lot better like the Neu's and Lehner's.

savagehaley14 09.18.2007 05:23 PM

i want to use the mechanical brake and the 2-speed what wire do i have to cut on the esc so i have to use a seperate receiver battery i forgot and who wants to make me a motor mount
