What hobbies do you have?

The purpose of this thread is to show what your hobbies are (including RC), and some short info on that hobby.

Here are mine:

RC - Brushless emaxx ($2500), Tmaxx (stock, $400), mini-t (stock). Don't really need to explain much here.

Metallurgy - I spend a lot of time researching the properties of metals. Have not really spent any money on this hobby (except maybe books), but I have spent a ton of hours reading up on my metals.

Piano - I've got a $35,000 grand piano, $12000 yamaha upright, a $8000 kohler & Cambell upright, and a $1250 yamah p-140 keyboard. I play at least two hours a day.

CAD - Still new to this, and all I own is solidworks. But it is a hobby in process. Only thing yet i've spent on in CAD is the solidworks programs and custom designed savage 3speed transmission to Emaxx chassis mounts via emachineshop.

Money - I'm a avid money collector. I mostley have old U.S paper bills, and some coins. Over $2000 invested in these bad boys. And now the collection is worth more than $5000. My neatest piece is a 1928 $20 gold certificate bill with George Washington on it.

Airsoft - Sorta a dead hobby now, but I have an AK-47 AEG ($400), a WA Gas machine gun ($400), MP5k AEG ($450), and WA .45 ($600).

GorillaMaxx360 06.06.2007 12:36 PM

I am All RC for now but that is because money flow is low and i will expand more when it grows but heres how it stands.

Emaxx (3-4,000) when complete (but about 1,000 of that was just buying the wrong stuff and learning what works and doesn't work) Xray m18 (250) stock with spy hitec and reedy, 18t (400) aluminum, proline, spy, spektrum. Waiting to arrive (ordered it 3weeks ago but is on back order) Firestorm (400) all nitro stuff, temp guage, hitec servo, and goodies. That is all i have for now. I did have like 6 cars but i needed to concentrate my money flow on finishing my rides so i sold a xxx-t, stock maxx, and xray truck so i can fix up these three little cars then buy more once they are done.

snellemin 06.06.2007 12:56 PM

RC is my #1 hobby for now, simply cause it keeps my imagination active on things to do with it.

I am a big audio guy. From having old school sony cassette walkmans/recorders too pro audio equipment. I don't really care for big brand names, as long as it produces the "sound" that I'm looking for.
I stopped building speakerboxes, but I use to build a bunch of them all the time and then just junk them.
I still make furniture inside my house. I hate paying an arm and a leg for stuff then can be made with 600$ in materials.
Then I have the 720 nissan minitruck in my garage. That is a never ending project.
I love messing around with my sons powerwheels. Making it go faster within the wife's limits ofcourse. Painting it, swapping gears and motors.
Then there are my computers/workstations. Those things are speed demons and money hogs.
There is that mountain biking, but I had to stop for a while doing that.

There are more hobbies, but then it gets boring reading my crap.

I have:

Cars (the big, gasoline hungry kind)

1. 2005 Subie Impreza 2.5RS (WRX Sport package); all stock excluding better tires, still a blast.

2. 1998 Grand Prix GTP; Stage III heads, VS Cam, SpecII Intercooler, 2.76" pulley (16 lbs of boost), SLP headers, !Cat, !Resonator, GTX polished stainless catback, Thrasher intake, !Balance Shaft, Stage II ported blower, ported LS1 TB conversion, LS6 MAF Sensor, HP Tuned PCM, 75 shot nitrous, Pregen crosslace wheels, KYB struts w/ SLP lowering springs, GMPP suspension; ~325 wheel HP without spray

3. 1986 RX7 - S5 1989+ body conversion, custom wing, Versatec side skirts, TSW EVO wheels (17x9 rear, 17x8 front), GAB adjustable struts w/ eibach prokit. 2002 327" LSx V8 engine, 224/230 .581/.591 X-ER gomer cam, ported throttle body, direct port nitrous and a few other things...
~550 RWHP on spray. 370" L92 based engine in progress

----------

Skiing - No fancy stuff here, just some ski blades and gear. I'm not winning the olympics anytime soon, but I'm pretty good. ;)

----------

Speed skating - once upon a time I was semi-pro. Now I'm old and fat, but still somewhat fast.

----------

Top Fuel motorcycle - Worked pit crew last year. We reset the world record (already belonged to our team) 5 times during the season. Taking a year off this year for wife/work.

www.larrymcbride.com

That's the main stuff. I dabble in Linux and such on the side, but that's what I do for a living, so I can't really count that. ;) Of course, I have the Maxx in the signature and several custom/older RCs from my youth.

nis720 06.06.2007 03:33 PM

1.) RC's

2.) Quad (YFZ450)

3.) Nissan 720 (like snellemin)

4.) Chevy Silverado Z71 (Mobile audio/Video)

seth556 06.06.2007 03:50 PM

I have rc which steels a lot of my money. I run everyday, usually 4 - 6 miles. I do a lot with computers. I'm currently learning Ruby on Rails. Then I have a dual boot with Ubuntu (Feisty). Although I would like the have a nice computer, mine is outdated. Just 1.6mhz and an old video card. But most of the time it gets the job done.

wallot 06.06.2007 03:55 PM

1 - RC right now. Spend lots of time getting parts from overseas for friends (aka keeping Mike busy :) )

2 - chilli. collect and consume rare hot stuff, trying to get to the ultimate pure capsaicin :) (1.2mio SHU level for general use right now - tabasco is about 3500SHU, pure cap is 16.7mio)

3 - searching for MMORPG i will actually enjoy for longer than a month

DickyT 06.06.2007 04:23 PM

1) RC - that's a given. I have an FLM e-maxx and BL rustler currently, no idea as to the money spent.

2) Fish keeping. I have a 55 US gallon freshwater tank that is a south american habitat tank with natural rock, drift wood and LIVE plants and fish from the region. It has over $500 just in lighting, a co2 difuser for the plants, weekly 25% water changes, water testing and adding nutrients for the plants with out throwing off the water balance.

I have a 3 gallon saltwater tank on my desk at work with a small piece of live rock, 1 small anenome, and 1 clown fish. I'm lazy on the maitenance for this tank. I just drive down to my lfs (local fish store) and buy a golon ofpremixed salt water and change out a gallon a week.

3) Wife.... I won't go into details....

4) Video games, I just gave up a 4 year addiction to Final Fantasy 11, RC has replaced the gaming.

skellyo 06.06.2007 04:45 PM

RC is the hobby I spent most of my time with.

Softball - I play on an adult co-ed league and was playing on an adult men's league until my daughter was born.

Bowling - Like to go hit the lanes every couple of weeks.

Home Theater/TV/Movies - I have 3 HDTV's and 3 Dolby Digital systems in the house

Aragon 06.06.2007 05:51 PM

Mainly RC - helis (4 flying, 1 not), gliders (4 flying, 3 in progress), and recently cars (1 riding, 2 in progress).

Computers... most things unix and internet architecture related which often brings programming into the mix. Started out as a hobby, but now mostly my living.

Recently started messing with CAD and VERY tempted to delve into machining... need more money+time!

A bit of an audio junkie, but that has been dormant for some time now (probably due to RC!)

A bit of dabbling in electronics now and then... thinking of focusing on it with more professional intentions...

Most important hobby - searching for a way to make a lot of money doing no work at all. :D

squeeforever 06.06.2007 05:53 PM

I have a few hobbies as well.

RC is a rather big one. I've probably spent 5k in the past 5 years :013:

BMX. I have a DK 4-Pack $600

My PSP is another prized posession. Sadly I have probably spent $750 in PSP related things. Kinda sad when its only a handheld system.

I, like SM, collect coins as well. I a collection worth somewhere around 10K. My favorite is a flawless $20 gold eagle (pure gold) worth half of my collection.

Another hobby is collecting knifes and guns. Between me and my dads collection, we have somewhere in the area of 20 guns and about 50 knifes. Desert Eagle .44 and and 2 Lile knifes are probably my favorites

Computers is another. I just finished building one completely from custom parts. (AMD 4200+, GeForce 6600 OC, custom case, 1gb RAM if any of you are familiar with computers)

Motocross as well. I currently have a '05 CR125R, but I kinda want around a '02 CR500.

Cars is probably my biggest though. My 69 Chevy pickup is my baby. Right now I'm putting a 355 in it with a TH-400 tranny behind it. Somewhere around 400hp at the fly.

Oh, and audio/video as well. Mostly car. I have a DB Drive 80.4 and 4 Zapco i-Force 502's in my truck right now. Nothing fancy really. As soon as I get the gastank out from behind the seats, I'm gonna put 4 Zapco i-Force 10D subs in it with a Rockford Fosgate 1000 watt Punch amp.

nativepaul 06.06.2007 05:55 PM

Electric R/C is what I enjoy the most, my main love is fast electric boats, but messing around with cars, planes and choppers is good fun too.

I spend a lot of time playing computer games, mostly an MMORPG, City of Heroes (highly recomended by the way Wallot I've seen a lot, but that's the only one I've spent more than a couple of months on, its clearly superior to all the rest, I've been addicted for near 3 years now with no signs of letup. I think I have a buddy trial key, if you haven't tried it and would like to send me a PM.)
I also dabble in First Person Shooters, my current one being battlefield 2.

I'm a forum monkey here, on Rum Runner Racing(boats), Ezone(planes), and RCUniverse(general R/C)

I did enjoy shooting untill Tony blair Banned Pistols from the UK in a knee jerk reaction after a school shooting. I'm semi contented with my Field target air rifle and airsoft pistols, but there way down on the list and I don't do either very often.

squeeforever 06.06.2007 06:02 PM

Wow....Thats gotta suck big time. What did you have to do when they were banned? Were ya'll allowed to keep them, just not fire them? Or what?

nativepaul 06.06.2007 06:34 PM

We were given 2 months to take them down to the police station and sign them over for a poxy £120 compensation per pistol, well under what either of my pistols where worth or go to jail, the police told me they would be destroyed and smelted down.

The nutter that went on a killing spree in the school had 4 pistols, 2 where legal and licensed and 2 where illegal so even if they had been banned before that incident he could still have killed many people, with his illegal black market pistols.

Interestingly handgun crime has risen fourfold since they were banned, I've seen an American bumper sticker that reads; If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. So true, as we have proved over here.

jnev 06.06.2007 07:02 PM

Obviously, I love rc cars. I actually just got my first shipment of parts inluding the motor, heatsink, pinion, and some other things. Before this buggy, which will soon be completed, I had an FLM stampede running the GTB 4.5 on 6 cells and an RC18mt running the mamba 6800 on 6 cells. My first rc car was a stock rustler, which after two years of it stock, turned into the FLM stampede.

I am also really into mountain biking. I have an Ironhorse 7point3. Not too many upgrades... just ODI ruffian grips and Primo pedals. I will have a new fork (Fox 36 Van RC2) in about a month (my birthday:) ). I usually go every summer to local mountain resorts to downhill. Usually Mammoth Mountain, and the other good part, is thta there is plenty of space for rc's after the lifts close.

I am also into snowboarding. I have a Burton Custom. I go snowboarding many times each year. I am not much of a jumper, although I can, I prefer just riding through virgin powder. :027:

And just hanging out with friends during summer.

What's_nitro? 06.06.2007 09:00 PM

Hmmm...let's see.

Radio Control, of course being my favorite. I have the Rustler, if you can still call it one, that was recently finished. Also a work in progress that I've dubbed the "Hurricane" which is basically a 1000W EDF powered truck. Might do a crawler now since the Rustler isn't sucking up cash anymore.

Computer Gaming and Computers in general. My system includes a WidowPC Sting917 Laptop: (2x) 100Gb HDD, 2Gb RAM, AMD Athlon64 X2 4600+, NVidia 7800 GTX 256Mb, 17" 1920x1200 screen, and Logitech Z5500 5.1 speakers. I play mostly HaloCE, but also RTCW and GBNA. At some point I plan on water-cooling my laptop.

Electromechanical Design. Current projects include a Man-portable Coilgun/Laser hybrid rifle, and a few novel propulsion systems. I dabble in things such as antigravity and free-energy. I also have several "modified" Nerf guns.

Oh I almost forgot. I enjoy watching TV, especially the shows on Adult Swim!

squeeforever 06.06.2007 09:08 PM

Holy hell...Those specs are off the chart for a laptop. Damn dude. That blows away my desktop. How do you like the Z5500s? That is the bad boys, aint it?

BP-Revo 06.06.2007 11:53 PM

Other than R/C (which is about $7500 on the tally thus far) I have:

Computers: Just got a new desktop. 22" Wide Screen LCD, CoolerMaster Stacker 832 Case, Asus P5N32E 650i MoBo, Foxconn Overclocked 8800GTX 768mb, 2gb Dual Channel Ram, E6600 Core 2 Duo at 3.0ghz, 2 pairs of 160GB 7200RPM Drives (one pair in Raid 1 the other in Raid 0).

Real Cars: Since my dad's interest is motorcycles, and my mom really doesn't car much about cars, I get to drive the nicest car we have - a 2004 Infiniti G35 Coupe 6MT. I have a CAI, Lightweight Pulleys, Engine Damper Mount, and Sway Bars. I have low 300's at the crank, but my wheel horse is much more than another G35 with the same rating because the Engine Damper Mount helps transfer more power to the wheels. I was able to completely destroy a newer version of my car (rated at 296hp). I pulled two car lengths in a sprint from 50-70 and he got a 1/2 car jump.

jhautz 06.07.2007 03:14 AM

1 - RC
2 - Golf
3 - RC
4 - Golf
5 - Baseball / Football (Spectator, and general sports nut)
6 - Spend a fair amount of time in the Gym also (lifting , running etc...)
7 - Wish I had time for computer games

AAngel 06.07.2007 03:38 AM

Well, I used to build custom high performance LED flashlights, but Katrina wiped me out and took most of my machine equipment with her.

Now I like RC, because I like to work with my hands and I haven't needed any "real" machining equipment to make whatever I need, yet. It's a kick in the butt too.

I also like guns. Primarily pistols of the .45 caliber 1911 variety and practice as much as I can. I used to shoot a lot, but Katrina took my Dillon loading press with her too, so until I can replace it, it's factory loads from Walmart, meaning a lot less practice.

My favorite hobby is my son. He's the biggest kick of them all.

pullstarter 06.07.2007 07:53 AM

RC and real cars are probably on a par for me, they suck up just about all my cash so i can't do much else :005: Currently have an AE92 Corolla with 4AGE engine, suspension and exhaust mods etc. Not doing any more to it now though, saving (attempting to :P) for an S13 or S14 Silvia or 180SX ( I think you called them 240SX's in the U.S and A?). <Borat Sagdiyev

Also into mountain biking, have a Kona Cindercone with DMR V8 pedals, havent done much to it yet, since moving i've been lazy and haven't ridden much.

I'm a bit of a history freak also, have a degree in it so I guess that makes me a nerd :027:

snellemin 06.07.2007 10:00 AM

Hey Angel,
Now I don't feel as bad about my "obsession" with flashlights. My favorite piece of led flashlight is little AAA ARC LED flashlight. I got it just before the guy went out of business(well he's back in business again). That and my little Gerbertool M4 are always in my pocket.

jhautz 06.07.2007 10:04 AM

You flashlight guys are yanking our chains right???

I got one of those LED flashlights with a crank on the side that you crank up and it works for 10 minutes.... My mom gave it to me for an "emergancy". Its really cool.:005:

snellemin 06.07.2007 10:25 AM

no we are not. I'm nothing compared to this guy I know. He goes as far as rebuilding the voltage regulators in his LED flashlights. And then lets not talk about the HID convertions that is done too the Bigger flashlights.
