jammin crt.5 motor suggestions

i just picked up a jammin crt.5 (used and already converted):yipi: and will be running it on the mm and 2s lipo, and was wondering if the new traxxas brushless motor would be a good choice, thanks for the help

I was looking at that same car as well over there. The Velineon heats up a lot in a 2wd st. In a 4wd 1/12 truggy, it will overheat even faster. It is just not big enough of a motor to run in it. If you can swing, try to get a 3s lipo pack. It will make motor choices a lot easier, and the system will run cooler. If you can get a 3s pack, the Feigao 10L motor has been working well for many people. PM Cememtary or hopefully he'll see this topic, since he is one of the main people I know of running this motor.

entjoles 09.14.2007 08:49 PM

i read a few of these crt.5 threads and it looks like i may have to go to 3s, but i want to try 2s first as i have to good batterys for it

lincpimp 09.14.2007 10:27 PM

What battery do you have. If it is big enough capacitity and c rating you could run a 7l or 8l motor. I run a 10l on 4s lipo and it rocks. I have that setup in my LS10 now and it works great in that too. I have a MM and a UBEC to run the 4s. Good temps and it runs great. I will be running a 9l on 3s in the crt.5. I may try the 7l on 3s, geared way low and see how the temps are compared to the 9l and 10l.

entjoles 09.14.2007 10:54 PM

maxamps 7.4v 5ah batterys, its rated @ 100 amps constant

what size is the 7,8L? a 540?

lincpimp 09.14.2007 11:04 PM

Yep, 540 l can motors. For 7.4 you need a higher kv, like a 7l or a 6l, not sure how hot it will run though. If I were you I would buy another 7.4 5k pack and run a 10l or 12l and have a very cool running, powerful setup. My 10l on 4s is a beast and I get around 20-25mins on a 4000 4s maxamps lipo. It will make the crt.5 a little heavier, but the truck is already heavy and solid in my opinion.

entjoles 09.14.2007 11:12 PM

you think 4s and a 10L motor?? i have 2 packs now!

or a new 3s pack

lincpimp 09.14.2007 11:36 PM

I have compared 3s to 4s systems in the same truck, both geared to do the same top speed. I found that the 10l running 4s was much better than the 10l running 3s. It is spinning around 36k on 4s versus 27k on 3s. Plus I was able to run a 14tooth pinion rather than a 20 tooth pinion. On 4s it felt like a comletely different system, more power, cooler running, and better driveability. If you have 2 packs, try the 10l, you will love it. I promise!!!

Wow! I just switched to your setup in my CRT.5EXT or shall we call it the CRT 1.0:na:. I have completed it tonight and have not had time to test it yet and the bash is tomorrow! I think the only thing that will hold me back is my driving!....

Bye:mdr:

lincpimp 09.15.2007 12:00 AM

You will love it, especially the temps. Plus the drivability is much better.

entjoles 09.17.2007 07:56 PM

just wondering???

would my hvmaxx 4.5 motor work on the mm esc.??

should i run it on 2s or try 4s ??

squeeforever 09.17.2007 08:26 PM

Yes, and 4S.

entjoles 09.17.2007 09:03 PM

thanks, i may give it a try, i have everything i need except hardend pinions

2FastSS4U 09.17.2007 09:29 PM

lol squee that's my avatar I use on BYT, I like it too :D

rschoi_75 09.19.2007 09:08 PM

Yo dude, I just saw this.

I'm running a Lehner Basic XL 4200 w/ 2s on my crt.5 and 16/46 gearing.

If you go with a feigao/nemesis motor, look for a 540L with a Kv rating of 4000 or higher. I think that's a 6L. Lehner's are great but hard to find and three times the price.

entjoles 09.19.2007 09:13 PM

well i received the crt .5 today, pretty cool truck , any way i decided to try the novak motor, a little cogging ocasionally when off and back on throttle and sometimes when trying to go from a dead stop(very little) and i was geared 15/46(stock spur) and there was no heat at all after 10 hard minutes, so i am going up to a 16 tooth pinion and maybe more, but if i go to a 3s lipo will it get hot or just go faster ?? right now 20-25mph

anyway here it is thrown together quick for a test run and also pictured is the shop supervisor

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...s/IMG_1012.jpg

this will get cleaned up and wires will be much shorter, i just had to drill one hole in the plexi for now and i can easily take it out and put it in the revo(the esc.)

entjoles 09.19.2007 09:19 PM

oh and can i just cut the sensor wires?

will novak still take it back?

rschoi_75 09.20.2007 12:23 AM

LOL... looks like you've got a 2nd generation r/c'er.

Nice truck so far.

DickyT 09.20.2007 11:28 AM

Nice truck! The shop super seems to have you hard at work on it too!

entjoles 09.22.2007 10:32 AM

thanks guys, and i think she will get a micro-t for x-mas, i put in a 18 tooth pinion and will try today and see if it gets warm, i also need to adjust settings on the mm, i havent changed them and they are all pretty low,

any ideas on timing, punch, and start power?

thanks for any help, oh and i am running 2s for now

entjoles 09.22.2007 09:08 PM

temps were still great @ 18/46

anyone have a suggestion on how to get rid of the cogging i get when i start(only when i go full throttle)

i tried to adjust different things and didnt seem to help much

seems to be faster now though, it will wheelie and such, probably about 27-30 id guess, goes good though the front tires balloon like crazy

i think a 3s pack would be perfect

entjoles 09.29.2007 11:24 PM

well i still would like to run 2s, how does this look?? there is 2 different versions , a 11 turn and a 9 turn.. what do you think of one of these??

entjoles 09.30.2007 12:25 AM

or this???? it comes in 4000 rmp/volt 5t , or 5000 rpm/volt 4t

entjoles 09.30.2007 05:53 PM

how about a 540 6s feigao???????????????????????????????

rchippie 09.30.2007 06:22 PM

Would one of the NOVAK touring car systems work in these ?.

BrianG 09.30.2007 06:29 PM

Does anyone run one of the Quark motors? Visually speaking, they don't look like much, but that doesn't really mean anything.

entjoles 09.30.2007 06:46 PM

sorry for all the posts , but i finally have some $ and am at a loss on which way to go with this truck, i really want to stick with 2s but am also thinking about the mm 4600 and 3s ????

BrianG 09.30.2007 07:00 PM

Your best bet would be to run 3s and an L size motor with a kv of around 3000. The MM motors are too small IMO. An S motor would be better than a MM motor, but an L motor would be better. Unfortunately, Mike only has the 9L and that is out of stock. You could try to contact him for an equivalent motor choice. But, you defintely want an L size around 3000 kv on 3s.

entjoles 09.30.2007 07:09 PM

thanks,

so ill get a 3s pack, 5k ?
a mm esc.

would a 9L be a good choice on 3s?

BrianG 09.30.2007 07:54 PM

Yeah, 3s 5Ah pack and the 9L would make a very good combo IMO. That's what I plan to use to replace my current MM 4600 setup, which gets too hot for my liking. Plus, the 9L has enough torque to gear up and/or use normal 2.2" tires if you really want fast speeds.

entjoles 09.30.2007 11:10 PM

mm , 540 9L , and 5k 3s lipo ordered, thanks

now i just need another Rx, bidding on now

entjoles 10.05.2007 08:12 PM

every thing is here except the 3s battery(shipped today) and i put it together and tried it out on 2s, a little slow, but i could gear up to 18/46 im at 15/46 now, temps were great so far, 95f for esc. and motor

thanks for the recomendation BrianG, this should be sweet on 3s

here it is ......

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...s/IMG_1070.jpg

btw: should i get the rc-monster heatsink for this???
the can looks the same as the xl so i guess i should
cant wait till the chassis comes out in the store for this!!!

BrianG 10.06.2007 12:35 AM

Sweet! Yeah, 3s should give you a good amount of speed. I don't think you'll need to gear up unless you really want to go fast! The RCM heatsink/clamp will help keep the end plate from popping off and will cool it at the same time. I would get it, just make sure you get the L version, not the XL...

MetalMan 10.06.2007 01:11 AM

I don't know if you have changed it from the pics, but make sure you cover those motor connections. The ESC will let out that magic smoke if they touch!

BrianG 10.06.2007 01:28 AM

I was wondering the same thing, but then I saw the "unshrunk" heatshrink tubes on the wires in the second pic. But yeah, definitely isolate those suckers!

entjoles 10.06.2007 08:52 AM

yeah i did shrink them, that would suck to smoke the esc., 3s battery is on its way, and i think i may get the rc-monster chassis once it comes out in the store

entjoles 10.09.2007 06:50 PM

just an update....

got my 3s pack in the mail today and had to test this thing out,

WOW!!!

thanks for the recomendation this thing is perfect, i am very impressed and i have the punch control @ 70%, to bad it diffs out so bad, i will have to put some heavier diff fluid in the front for sure, and maybe turn down the throttle end point, after a few high speed runs it wore down one of the front tires pretty good, man i cant wait until the ext. chassis comes out and i put some truck tires on it, i was geared 15/46 so with bigger tires ill probably go to 12 or 13 on the pinion

oh and even though its only 55f out today temps were : battery=70, esc.=85, motor=80

rootar 10.15.2007 10:58 PM

i am GLAD to hear the the 3s is working great for you ill be running the EXACT same setup in my lightning stadium 10 (MM, 9L, 5ah 3s maxamps) which should be here this friday. What kind of runtimes and speed are you getting out of the setup? i cant wait for my stuff to get to my truck built.

btw any videos?

entjoles 10.15.2007 11:21 PM

well i raced it on 2s and the 5 min heats were taking about 1500 mah out of the pack

on 3s i really have no idea yet, may race this weekend though, i ran it for ten minutes bashing on 3s and only dropped the pack around a .5 volts

no video yet, and my wife will have the camara this weekend so i wont be able to have any tape @ the track
