My Jammin X-1 CR conversion

3 Attachment(s)
Been working on this on and off for the last few months. I did i crt.5 project in between, so this project has been on the backburner for a while. Now its nearly done! :yipi:

Its your basic Jammin X-1 CR conversion...
- MM / 8XL with 18/48 gearing
- 4s 6000mah lipo (two 2s packs in series).
- RC-Monster mount and ubec
- Jimmy rigged battery holders using some spare C.F. and some random car parts. Its surprisingly strong.
- custom body in the works by Dafni.

I've just been putting the finishing touches on this over the last week.... added a fan, cleaned up the wiring, changed the wing, etc... Its all set to test, but its raining cats and dogs in Nor Cal right now. I hope to be able to get some good park testing in this weekend. Or maybe go to Sacremento for some track runs if time allows...

Anyways, thought I'd share pics of my progress so far. Sorry I don't have any build pics. I always forget to take pics during the build...

Wow!! love it, buggy have the best chassis to convert it to electric, lot of room.
Your tires, this is the Proline badlands?????

rschoi_75 10.13.2007 01:25 PM

No, but very similar. They are some random tires I got at my LHS's bargin bin. They had no branding on them... probably some OEM tires from china. The compound is med/hard, so its pulling bashing duties right now. I have some good proline tires for the track as well.

Your buggy looks good. I really like my jammin buggy.

rschoi_75 10.15.2007 03:19 PM

Thanks rchippie! I love this thing.

I got some solid testing in this weekend. We got a little break from the rain so I took it to the local park for some street runs and a little baseball diamond action.

Everything surprisingly well! The buggy is quiet and smooth. Mike's motor mount is flawless... as expected. The mesh couldn't be smoother.

It tops out at around 38mph on the street and a little less in grass. It kinda had me wishing for a little more top end, but right now its perfect for a med size 1/8th track, so I think I'm going to stick with the gearing for now. I can always change it later if needed.

Like I said, test went smooth, but I did have a little heart stopper towards the end of the run. I had gotten the street and ballpark runs in as planned and was finishing off the session on the grass. Everything was going great, and I had some real nice rooster tails of loose grass flying around everywhere.

The buggy was so planted I think I got a little too cocky.... I ran it it to about 80 yards away and then saw a splash and water tail coming out.... Now if you've never seen a grown man sprinting across a soccer field with a radio in his hand... its quite a funny sight. Especially if that man is a little out of shape... So I get to the buggy and its soaked. I had accidentally run through a puddle without seeing it. I turned everything off as quickly as possible and immediately went home to dry it off, and try to salvage the electronics. I took all the electronics apart, then proceeded to blow dry the hell out of everything. Luckily nothing was damaged and I was able to put everything back together last night.

Whew... that was a close one. It would've been a world record for "how fast can your kill a r/c car". I think I used up a bit of karma on that one. :mdr:

Anyways, everything is A-ok now and I can't wait to run it at a track. Its raining again, so I'll just have to wait a few days.

That seems kind of low with that gearing? 18/48 is kind of tall? I run 16/46 with a lehner 1940/8 which has almost the same kv and I think that is almost to much for my track!

Nice conversion btw!

rschoi_75 10.16.2007 12:24 PM

Thanks! .... and about the gearing... I've got a some smaller pinions in the tool box, so If I need to gear down, its a quick change. Haven't been able to take it to the track yet, so I don't know for sure what the final gearing will be. I'll keep your ratio in mind though. Thanks.

rschoi_75 10.23.2007 07:17 PM

Ok, got some solid runs in over the last few days. Hakan, you were right, I am over geared.

The thing runs like a bat out of hell, but I am getting hotter temps than I would like. After a run of about 10 minutes, I was getting temps of 175-180F for the 8XL, 140-145F for the MM, and 130F on the batteries. Ambient temps were in the low 80's F. I've got a fan on the MM and the rc-monster heatsink on the motor.

I also noticed that the center diff needed some thicker oil, so I'll be addressing that tonight as well as changing to 16/48. should help a bit without loosing too much speed. I may have to put a fan on the motor, but I hope not.

COPY CAT! ;)

Just kidding, lol.

Looks good! I'll tell you from my E x1, put the cf servo strap back on, it will prevent a lot of the flex in the steering mount. Or, you could get an aluminum mount.

rschoi_75 10.24.2007 12:32 PM

Hey wait... I thought I was the only one doing a conversion...

Supra, do you have pics to yours? I think I saw it before... a while ago, but it may have been some other buggy. Anyways, these are awesome buggies. About the cf servo hold-down, I was thinking about that. I didn't think I would need it, but I can always cut it down to size and mount it back in there. I guess it wouldn't hurt.

supralover72 10.24.2007 09:14 PM

Some old pics. Waiting to get the money to go lipo like yours.

battery holder

Hello,

Could you tell me what battery holder do you use?

Tks

rschoi_75 10.25.2007 11:55 AM

I made my own w/ some c.f. and spare parts.

Looks like Supra is using a modded traxxas batt holder for his. Or something similar.

I got some modded traxxas battery holders from Kershaw designs for another project. check them out if you need a ready made battery tray.

supralover72 10.25.2007 09:05 PM

I just used some ae batt cups off of tower, but rschoi has the better idea.

rschoi_75 10.26.2007 04:09 PM

Ok, so I got some great runs in last night with the rebuilt center diff and 16/48 gearing. Temps were well within reason... 158F for the motor, 127F for the esc, and 122F on the batteries after a 10 minute run at the park. Everything is great, except for the drop in top speed. Its still seemed to have enough for a med sized track, but kinda lacking for a large soccer field  I'm very tempted to get a better set-up, but with the MMM just on the horizon, this set-up will stay for a while.

Dafni 01.08.2008 09:52 AM

Did you get that body mounted up? I wouldn't mind a pic for my gallery.

Cheers
Daf

Got it yesterday! :yipi:

I had been out of town for a while, and I got my mail started up again. I really have to say its one of the nicest bodies I've seen in a long time. I just got it cut and mounted tonight. I swear, my x1 doesn't deserve such a nice shell. The pics don't do the body any justice. You should see it when the light hits the metallic red at an angle.... its unbelievable.

Daf, amazing job man. You make me want to get another x1 kit to so the buggy looks as good as the shell. Much appreciated. I will definitely be coming back to your for some more paint in the near future.

rschoi_75 01.09.2008 01:55 AM

daf... give me a few days and I'll try to get some better shots for your gallery. Its raining here in CA, so no outdoor pics for a few days.

Daf,
Here's some better pics for your gallery. Sorry for taking so long. Its raining way too much here! I can hook you up with some large size pics via email if you need them.

skillx 01.24.2008 06:02 PM

Very nice looking lid. Kinda got the CF thing going on in the paint. I like it. Been thinking of having a MT, truggy, and now buggy matching shells for mine done.

rschoi_75 01.24.2008 09:32 PM

Give him a pm and see what he thinks. I'm sure he'd make an outstanding shell for you.

satttheman 01.29.2008 10:55 PM

very nice buggy im try to pick one up to convert myself

rschoi_75 01.30.2008 05:53 PM

Thanks guys. But I think most of the credit should go to Daf for the "looks". Under the shell, this poor guy is quite thrashed. I have to admit, I love this buggy. It takes a beating and keeps coming back for more.

Here's a quick video update of some bashing I got in over the weekend.

Update:

After blowing out my cheap-o no name esc from ebay, I decided it was time to go back to the MM. I just got my new ccbec from mike, and waiting on some neu end bell covers for a 1512/2.5d motor. I added on a novak 2700uf cap, and re-did my layout. I can't wait to get this buggy back up and running with the Neu installed.

GO-RIDE.com 02.14.2008 07:20 PM

Nice work laying it all our on that one plate. Very clean.

What points did you solder the capacitor to?

rschoi_75 02.15.2008 01:27 AM

3 Attachment(s)
Thanks. I installed the cap on the battery leads, as close to the board as possible. I didn't want to mess with castle's solder after reading what Bernie posted, so I just cut away some of the wire housing near the base.

I got in the covers from mike today, so I was able to finish up the install. The neu is a real nice motor. This is my first so, I'm very impressed at its quality vs my other brushless motors.

edit: hey guys, I got a quick question for the neu owners. Are your motors really loud at start up? Mine is extremely loud at start-up, but then gets quiet as the rpm's go up. At first I assumed it was just my mesh, since the noise comes from the pinion/spur area. But after checking it, I found it was fine. The buggy runs very smooth at both low and high speeds (powerful too!). Nothing is binding, warped, or loose, and everything runs fine. Its just very loud at the start. I can't seem to figure it out. Anyone got a suggestion?

supralover72 02.16.2008 08:50 AM

That's awesome man! SO CLEAN! Amazing job. I'm back and it's good to see that this is what I came back too!

rschoi_75 02.18.2008 01:28 PM

Thanks supra. I got some good runs in yesterday and this morning. I couldn't be happier.

This buggy is noticeably more powerful and the new CC software update runs the Neu very smoothly. At the end of a 15 minute run on 5s 4800mah lipos, the motor was 102*F and the MM was 98*F. The lipo was even cooler at 87*F, and ambient temps are around 65*F outdoors. All in all, this buggy has very happy electronics. I must also note that running the novak 2700uf cap does keep the esc much cooler than without it. So thanks for the tip fellas.

fwd4g63 03.07.2008 11:05 PM

center diff

hi, just a quick question. what did you do to modify the center diff? just curious. i noticed with the instant power of the brushless system it onloads the front tires and then the power is gone waisted on the tires spinning in the air.

thanks

rschoi_75 03.11.2008 06:57 PM

Hi, try some heavier oil in your center diff. It will prevent the front from unloading like you describe.

fwd4g63 03.12.2008 12:34 PM

diff lube

yeah i tried a lot of different weights in it. the heaviest oil i have found is the kyosho 500,000wt. it helped and im sure in a race scenario it would be a lot better. i just bash though so i went back to forward only and it wheelies more which sucks as far as trying to keep it on the ground, but i did quit splitting the front tires. thanks for the tip though

Arct1k 03.12.2008 12:58 PM

30k traxxas oil does the job for me...

fwd4g63 03.12.2008 01:20 PM

oil

yeah that had nothing for me. like i said i used 100k oil and then 500k fluid and it didnt do much better. it is brushless on 5s though

rschoi_75 03.12.2008 06:44 PM

what's your rear diff filled with?

also, maybe reduce the start-up power some how? what esc are you using?

Hydrodancer 03.14.2008 10:05 PM

It sounds to me like the oil your running is too thick. The rear is getting full power and is causing your front end to lift and unload. If you thin out the oil the front wheel will stay more planted and pull the buggy through corners.

The only other options are to lighten up on the lead finger or move/add weight to the front to keep it down.

That "noise" you mention is (if it's what I think it is) the gear mesh slapping when the neu flips between each of it's poles at low speed. The magnets are so strong, once the rotor makes it past a pole, it quickly spins to the next pole faster than the gears are spinning when at running at very low speeds. Had me confused for quite some time. In fact, you can roll it while it is turned off and start to hear the effect. You may notice if you pull back on the truck while pushing it (if this makes sense) such that is is rolling against a constant force, the noise goes away since the mesh is alway help in contact. Least this is what I found on my 1515 2.5d.

grammar edit: the mesh is always held in contact.

rschoi_75 03.20.2008 04:13 PM

Yeah, that's what I figured. Thanks cadima. much appreciated.

Jammin PBS conversion!

A little update....

I recently got the jammin pbs conversion for my buggy. It feels like I've gained some more steering which is always helpful. The quality of the parts are very nice as well.
