bullet connectors
 

I have always soldered the motor directly to the ESC in the past. However, I would like to try bullet connectors so it will be easier to switch systems between cars. I bought 3.5mm connectors for my RC10GT and received them today from Mike.

I would like to know if the female or male connectors go on the motor or ESC.

Females on ESC, because if the males were on the ESC and the batt were plugged in with throttle applied and not motor was attached, you could short out the ESC.

Just curious, though, why 3.5mm? The MM uses 4mm plugs standard, and they will work much better than the 3.5mm ones assuming you don't use CC's male 4mm connectors.

I thought that since the MGM ESC's and Lehner motors are pretty robust, they would work on the this mild set up that I have as well. But I just assumed that the MM ESC has 3.5mm connectors instead of asking first.

Do you know where I can buy the 4mm bullet connectors?

Hobby People carries 4mm connectors, but they're with the airplane stuff. They are made by Promax.

I am just having a bad day. lol I already ordered them from Tower. But at least I now know they have the connectors for the future...

Why not just get 5.5mm? There the best in my opinion. Good connection, easy to solder, and huge current capability.

I'm with Squee on this one. 5.5 is the way to go. Not only do they handle as much current as we could ever need they are the most secure plug IMO. If they start to loosen up over time all you have to do is spread the bullet prongs a little and you are good as new. I change EVERYTHING to 5.5mm so I can swap motors and speed controllers around at will and test different setups easily with no additional soldering involved.

The best deal I have found is buying the 5.5mm direct from Neu in the 10 pair pack. You get 10 male and 10 female for $25 shipping included. Go to the Neu website and check in their store.

The best deal I have gotten on the 5.5mm connectors is threw starluck rc. $1.50 for 1 male/1 female.

The 4mm connectors are just standard banana plugs. I say get the 5.5mm. I just switched all of my stuff over.

Will the wires on the MM ESC be thick enough to fit inside the 5.5mm connectors? On the wires from the MM on my 1/8 buggy, the wires seem very thin... which is why I directly soldered them to the motor.

On another subject, is carbon fiber strong enough to make battery trays out of? I have seen many people use this material, but for the most part, they were racing. Would it be strong enough for bashing? I have never raced, so I am unsure of whether racing or bashing puts more stress on the components (not electronics) of the car. I would assume racing does because it is turning and jumping and a very fast pace... but bashing, sometimes there will be massive jumps, and it can be quite rough on the parts.

So would carbon fiber be strong enough?

I looked at the plugs at Starluck RC and I didn't understand what this meant:
I looked at the connectors from Neu, and they also seem nice. Will performance be different from different companies? I can't imagine ti being that big of a difference...

That means theres a hole in the side of the plug that will take 12AWG wire so you can solder it at a 90 degree angle.

Oh, ok. But you don't have to solder it at a 90 degree angle, correct? If you want you can just have it go through the main hole in the back of the plug, right?

seems this question went unanswered. i soldered 5.5mm bullet connectors (bought from mike, by the way :tongue:) to my MM leads. the opening of the connector is certainly larger than the wire, so i 'twisted' the bare wire up and crammed it into the hole so it took up the spare space. heat it up, add solder through the handy hole (wasn't meant for that i know, but it sure was handy) and viola.

I just switched to 3.5s on my 8XL from direct soldered wires to use the motor for another application, when I put it back in the buggy I noticed no difference in coging at all.

There are quality differences between various makes of both 3.5 mm which I use for motors and 4mm which I use for batterys (I have some of both that I wont ever use) I've never had normal basket type bullets loosen, but for those that have or worry about them doing so I have seen 3.5mm and 4mm available with prongs like 5.5mm/6mm instead of baskets.

Sounds good. I am hoping to receive the plugs tomorrow. :smile: I plan to use these plugs only for the motor/ESC connections though. I have always used deans for my battery/ESC connections.

Yeah.. I got mine from StarluckRC also... 5.5mm are nice.. but ebay you can get 10 pairs for $7...

Too bad Deans didn't make a three point connector like their regular plugs. And they could even make it non-polarized so switching two of the motor wires (if spinning the wrong way) would be as simple as flipping the connector. :)

Neu 6mm plugs are nice, if you want to go all out.

yeah, i was seriously considering those 6mm plugs... you can fit 10 gauge wire into them! but they're super pricey, for just connectors... :eyes:

I'm using the 5.5mm connectors as well, I have no problems sticking 10 Gauge wires in them.... I got my wires from robotmarketplace.com, they're pertty flexible for 10 gauges.. I have yet to try the 8 gauge, but then I'll have to move everything to 6mm connectors..
