HV 4.5 e-revo gearing
I did it, I'm sick of nitro tuning problems so I built a gorillamaxx e-revo. I used the Novak HV4.5 system and I'm looking for suggested gearing and what I should expect for speeds and runtimes. Right now I'm running a 70T spur and 18T pinion, traxxas talon tires and some cheapo 4500mAh 6cell batteries with the new traxxas plugs on everything. I have run a few times with this gearing, pretty impressed with the speed but the torque is amazing! If the tires get traction it will flip over backwards from a roll. My Revo 3.3 has only pulled a few wheelies in it's life and never anything like this! Because of that amazing torque I'm wondering if the gearing is to low. The motor and esc stay pretty cool (next purchase is a temp gun) but I have no problem holding my hand on either. Any suggestions for gearing would be greatly appreciated. I will be upgrading to LiPo's as soon as I sell my T-maxx 2.5R
|
Does it go fast enough for you? If your happy with the top sped I would leave it as it is.
It never hurts to have too low of gearing and I find it really fun to drive a truck with a lot of punch in the low end. |
Speed has been decent with the 70/18 but way to much punch on the bottom. I have also stepped up the batteries to Venom 4200 7 cells. I have pulled a few. succesful back flips on takeoff on high traction surfaces wich is cool and all but it's getting old having to keep flipping the thing back on its wheel after taking off. I stepped the gearing up to 64/18 but that didn't affect the flipping at all. I have now changed the gearing to 64/22. It might be to much for the motor but I don't think so cause it will still do a complete flip on carpet. Brushless is the way to go!!! Tons of torque!!!!

Here is a pic. I didn't do the body, bought a rolling chassis and it came with it, looked like crap with the tires the guy threw in but once I put some stock revo talons on it the Hummer body looks decent, just wishing for a better paint job. A spektrum DX3R is in the works as is a crowd pleaser 2.0 body

i blew mine up on 18/70 , i was using lipo and it was in a g3r with emaxx trans and locked in 2nd, i was also in grass , so be careful
mine gave me no warning, it was running great, went in and recharged my batteries and it never worked again i would stay at the 18/70 and if you go to lipo go to 12/72 |
Talking with my LHS they have heard of many problems with people running this set up with LiPo's. I was thinking of making the swith and they said that they haven't had one run right yet with them. Thats when I bought the 7 cell venoms. I'm gonna try the higher gearing still, although leary about it what fun is life if you don't take chances. Novak claims 40-45 MPH is possible with this in an e-maxx, my revo ways about 9.5 lbs in running gear (about the same as an E-maxx without batteries) so my goal is to approach the 40 MPH mark. If I burn it up it'll suck but that just means I'll get a better set up! When the parking lot dries up I'll post my results!

Are you running the stock emaxx clutch setup?
I am running the strobe slipper with mod1 spur 51t. I just toasted my HV 4.5 system after 20 secs this weekend, way overgeared (14/51). Newb here. I am thinking of switching to the stock emaxx clutch for more gearing options. If not, I'm stuck with the 51t spur and probably a 9t pinion cause I couldn't find a mod1 8t. |
what are you running for batteries? Thats not to far off from my original gearing of 70/18. 70/18 works out to 3.89:1 ration and yours works out to 3.86:1, my motor and esc where barely even getting warm, prolly about 110-120 degrees, just enough to say they where warm. I'm not positive about the temp but thats a close est. I know hot water out of the sink in a restaurant is aprox 165, novak suggests no more than 160, and mine isn't even coming close to as hot as the water! As I said in my last post my LHS hasn't had any luck with this system running LiPo's. I wish I had consulted them before buying this setup but I did it on a whim 1 night and bought everything to build this off ebay without doing enough research on what to run for motor/esc. I thought that if Novak was good enough for Traxxas they'd b good enough for me. Now I found out Traxxas has ditched Novak and they're building their own esc for the new water-proof E-maxx because Novak won't stand behind they're product. If I melt mine down I'll prolly wait for the MMM that's supposed to be released in March.

I'm wondering if my tranny may be locked in first instead of second as I was told! That would explain my extreme gearing change needed to approach the speeds Novak has said are possible on their website. Any one got any ideas as to if this could be the case? Or tell me how to find out without tearing the tranny out and taking it apart?
|
Its completely possible you have it in first. The gear it should be locked into is the one thats closest to the spur gear, or when the shifter is pushed in.
I'm going to assume so because I blew my ESC sky high running 68/14 in a light G2R setup (~9.25lbs RTR). So you running 70/18 has me very suspicious. |
I tore my tranny out and apart and confirmed my suspicions. There is no second gear in my tranny only the 36T first gear. Doing the math and shooting for Novak's suggested 22:1 reduction for monster trucks I would need a spur/pinion reduction of 3.0067:1. My current gearing of 64/22 puts me at 2.909:1 so I am slightly over geared right now. I'm going to gear it down slightly for safety and keep my current tranny gearing. Only cause I have gears to get me where I want without spending any more $
Stock revo diffs = 2.643:1 37/14 Tranny input-idler = 1.538:1 20/13 idler-1st = 1.8:1 36/20 *idler-2nd = 1.55:1 31/20 Going to go back to 64/18 (3.555:1) for now, ought to keep me plenty safe! |

Added a Robinson Racing dual slipper and a crowd pleaser 2.0 body, kept the paint very simple with one color but I think it looks really sharp and the niro guys wont realize what just blew by them!

F*@k!!! Just snapped the motor shaft!!! on my HV4.5
|
Well you aren't the first person to do that. Nor will you be the last. That is pretty common to happen with the Novak motors because their shafts are so small in diameter.
|
Anyone know when Novak is supposed to release the 5mm upgraded rotor and endbell?
|

Mid-late February it says, so I would go ahead and pre-order one. Remember you will need 5mm bore 32p pinions now too. |
Will a stock revo slipper clutch fit on an original e-maxx tranny? What needs to be done? Are there mod 1 gears available for that set up and can I get mod 1 pinions with a 5mm bore? Or just use the stock revo gears 0.8mod if there are 5mm bore pinions available in that. I wanna order everything at once and I'm waiting to find this stuff out b4 pre ordering my new 5mm rotor and endbell from novak

You can also get the 5mm to 3mm reducer. Use smaller motor shaft with 5mm pinions. |
is 1.0 metric the same as mod1?

If the input shaft of a revo/T-maxx tranny can be swapped with the one from a e-maxx I can use the good slipper from a revo, I have both and did a little disassemblie to find out that the revo input shaft isn't a hex shaft it is round and uses a pin to drive the slipper. I have an extra T-maxx tranny so I might try the transplant if I don't hear otherwise
|
Mod1 = metric 1.0
32pitch = MOD 0.8/metric 0.8 The Revo input shaft can be trimmed down slightly and used with the GorillaMaxx singlespeed conversion for the emaxx tranny, but I dont know how the t-maxx input shaft will measure up if you tried it in the un-modified emaxx tranny- I'd say suck it and see.... |
Thanks, I'm gonna try it tonight
|
May have figured out the snapped rotor shaft! I was playing around with the slipper when it happened, trying to set it so it wouldn't flip when I punched it! 3/4 turn out from locked was so loose the thing barely moved so I was tightening it up a little at a time. E-maxx slipper setup sucks! It was all or nothing and when it slipped there was a LOT of heat! 4600Kv motor on 14.4V = aprox 66,000RPM and the truck barely moving! Melted the spur to the bearing and slipper, enough to throw it off center, strip random spots and the jerking resulted in a broken shaft.
Solution - Pre ordered 5mm upgraded rotor and endbell and a pinion from Novak, purchased a Gmaxx single speed so I can run a revo slipper and Mod1 gearing! Any input or comments appreciated! |
My 5mm shaft is supposed to be on the way from Novak but I did some other shopping this weekend with my tax return. I can finally ditch the traxxas radio setup, I would have liked the DX3R but my lhs didn't have one in stock so I bought the DX2.0, I also bought a new E-Maxx and all I can say is the thing is awesome in the snow! Along with that I bought a losi mini slider with hopes of racing that in the stock class. Along with all this I have added a Gorilla single speed tranny and revo slipper with mod1 gears, hope this will all work good together!

OK! Finally got things to work and run my revo again! GMaxx single speed tranny, revo slipper clutch, MGT Mod1 spur 49t, Novak prototype Mod1 5mm bore 13t pinion. This is giving me a 23.75:1 total reduction. Motor and esc where barely warm. First run was with Venom 4200Mah 7 cell packs, they're toast! shrink melted right off the hump cell and one was smoking! The packs only have 5-6 runs on them and this is a conservative gearing setup. Throwing caution aside I immedietly grabbed my 4500Mah all-battery.com packs and threw them in! Absolutely NO PROBLEMS!!! Way more punch, more speed, and the batteries didn't get any hotter than in my stock E-maxx. I don't wanna bash anyone but I haven't been happy with these Venom packs since day 1! I recomend all-battery to anyone bashing or even racing with Ni-Mh. These packs are less than $30 each and pack a ton of power! I love my new set up and will be ordering some 7 cell packs from all battery as soon as I can!
|
Whenever I hear 'Venom' and 'Nimh', I think 'toast'.... glad the other packs are good though, no sense spending massive amounts of money on Nimh packs for just general bashing.

E-Revo is fast and POWERFUL, too much power right now! I'm snapping the output shafts on the tranny! Went through two of them now:-( What is everyone else doing? Can I run stock revo center shafts on a G2R chassis? I like how the screw goes all the way through the shaft on those.
|
If you mean the actual slider shafts (that come in two oieces that slot together), then yep, you can easily use those on the G2R. You will probably need two longer shafts, then trim them down as required until they fit.
|
yeah thats what I figured, the one on the rear of the new(3905) e-maxx is really long and I may try them. But I also found out that both the ouput shafts I twisted apart are the lightweight alum ones. I thought the first one that came in the tranny when I bought it was steel so I figured I'd try the alum one, the second shaft lasted all of maybe 2 minutes! I ordered the standard one, I beleive this would be steel, and I'll see how it works. If I snap it again I'll get another one and some plastic slider shafts. I was hoping to find a titanium one but had no luck in my searches!
|
Well I finally got my revo back together. Still using the steel dogbone center shafts and now I have a stock steel output shaft in the GMaxx tranny and lots of Loctite on everything!!! I did some running in the parking lot and I may need to change my gearing cause the esc seems to be getting pretty warm even with the temp outside being around 30f and the fan working on the esc. I guess I'll see how this works, wish me luck!
Gear ratio from input shaft to tire is 6.3:1 Spur/Pinion = 49/13 - 3.77:1 Total ratio = 23.75:1 Novak is looking for a 22:1 in a E-maxx, I'm close to a Lb lighter at 9.5 RTR |
A local police officer seen me running my e-revo in the walmart parking lot at 1:15 Am this morning and actually came over to me and said "hold on, I'll turn around and radar it" I couldn't beleive it! I got 38MPH in about 100-150 straight away and still gaining, I was running 12s of 4500Mah NiMh. I'm pretty happy with that. Right after the cop left though I hit a patch of ice at that speed and slammed into the under carriage of a car and did a LOT of damage. Broken bulkhead, shock pushrod, bent hinge pins, skid plate, etc! Anyone with a G2R have fitment problems? I had a hell of a time getting the new pieces to fit, had everythying went like it should have I would have had it fixed in an hour and a half not 2 1/2 Hrs. Makes me wish I went with the tekno kit, at least the whole chassis would have still been traxxas and everything would fit without any issues!

Wow, reading through your thread, I can't tell what you have more of, extra money, or patience!
It seems that if it could go wrong, it has for you!! |
