Best Cooling Fan for Mamba Max?
What's the best fan to get to mount to the Mamba Max heatsink?
Now that Castle has updated the firmware for the MM, which promises better startups, I plan on testing the MM again. It's time to see if it will run 12 pole outrunners. I know the little booger tends to run hot though. I remember seeing a small fan (25mm) or so that would mount directly to the heat sink. Anyone remember where to get that? |
Here you can find a 25mm fan: http://www.rcmart.com/catalog/produc...ducts_id=20590
and here a 30mm fan: http://www.rcmart.com/catalog/produc...ducts_id=21971 I was using the 25mm one my Mamba Max for a long time, with it my MM never got hotter than 125f. |
I was using a 5v 25mm fan from allelectronics.com but they dont seem to have it any more.
The 25mm fans fit the heatsink perfectly and the one BL-P linked above looks perfect. |
Here's the one I use from digikey.com, it's 25x10mm and 3.5cfm, @5v (highest cfm I've found). $11.47 plug some shipping. Runs realy well on 6v too.

I use 25mm 5v fans from the fanvan on Ebay - I also run 2 on the RCM feigao motor heatsink...
I think I use the stampede rear body mount support screws which fit great into the MM heatsink. |
This is the best fan I have seen: novak 25mm fan. I just plug it into the rec and bolt it to the mm heatsink with m3 machine screws. I also space it off the heatsink 1/4" or so, that seems to help flow and cooling. Or send it to Artur and have him do the stage 1 mod. That cured my heat issue and ran fine with a 7xl on 4s in a heavy 1/8 buggy. With the new software and his mods I have a feeling the MM may work with outrunner and high loads better!

This is the fan I intend to run on my MM, It's a 25 x 25 x 10mm fan w/ a 3.5 CFM rating. Under $15.00 shipped.:yipi:

That is what i use but they are 4.99 on fleabay from fan van

I like using the 12v models right off of the lipo (4s), you can attach the fan leads right at the circuit board on the MM and keeps the tiny wires out of harms way.
|
metalman - thats it
|
The fans on FanVan are only producing 1.3 CFM @ 7000 RPM on 5v.
The one I listed produces 3.5 CFM @ 13000 RPM on 5v. The price on the e-bay fans is very good, but the higher rated one isn't that much more expensive. |
Thanks i'll note that for next time if these go...
|
Your welcome, hope I didn't come off as an ass.
I'm pretty much a nOOb at this 1/8 BL stuff, I guess I'm just being overly careful, if the 1.3 CFM fan is working, why not use it. |
|
Wow, it those numbers are accurate, they would be a serious contender at $3.49.
5VDC Dimensions: 1.60"W x 1.60"H x 0.80"D 8.6CFM Ball bearing Current: 700mA Power: 2.0 watts Noise: 36dBA 2.5" Lead wires with Bare ends |

They keep my MM very cool thats for sure. |
Good enough, I think I'll try one out.:yipi:
Edit: Just ordered 2 w/ Fex Ex shipping still under $15.00! |

I use the Integy fans from Tower, $5.69 each. I usually order 3-4 at a time.

how would a 25 mm fan at like 3 to 6 CFM on top of the heat sink compare to a 40 MM 49 CFM fan mounted in front of the caps?
also a fan on top should blow air away from the heat sink? meaning suck the heat out |

thanks but my point was would a large fan mounted to blow across the caps 90 degrees to the MM work better than a small fan mounted on top of the heat sink?

hippie,
How do you wire up that brushless fan? I noticed it has three wires. |
49 cfm is huge volume auto2, the problem with it mounted 90' is that is does not ensure flow across the entire surface area of the heat sink, you get little eddies (spelling?) that will trap areas of air that do not realy cycle (like standing at the corner of a building on a windy day, there is a "sweet spot" where the air does not realy blow... you propably know what I mean. You could create a duct of sorts if you have some lexan body clippings laying around, just use a "pocket torch" at a reasonable distance to heat and bend the lexan to the shape you want. You could get creative and make a buck (a block of wood carved to the shape you need) and form the lexan over that. I think you can get lexan sheets from the better hobby shops as the plane guys like to make canopies and stuff out of it.
On the other hand there are a few guys (BrianG) who don't care to use fans on their MM's anyway, so you may not need as much cooling as you think. Rcaddict, usually the 3 wire fans have a "sensor" wire to feedback the rpm of the fan (tells the controller that it is working). I've seen that the 3 wire fans I have are all red-blue-black, I just clip the blue wire and use the red and black. |

And yes, I am one of those who never use fans, but I won't get into that debate again! Sometimes, just a little extra heatsinking is all that's needed. |

Oh yes. First thing I'm doing is taking it apart, removing the fan, and adding slightly more heatsinking. Then I can sell the fan here to people like you.
|
Hey, how would you wire in that delta brushless fan on a mm with a cc-bec on a 2ch. am rx? Im total dumbness with all this stuff. Would it require a 3ch?
|
The rx will already be at 5v-6v, so you can use a y adaptor where the bec is plugged into. Or plug it into the batt slot.
|
I personally run 2 40mm fans on my Raze,One blowing inline with the fins on the heatsink and one blowing into the open end of my outrunner... Its running off 2 9v batteries at the moment.. in series. so they are pushing somewhere around 6cfm,
