BL set-up help
I know that this question is propably getting old, but I'm gonna ask anyway. I am looking for a BL set up for around $350 For my e-maxx 3906 (yeah I know I should have bought the 3905).Ive already gotten all of the required drivetrain parts. I would like to be able to run the 14 cells I've got now and still be able to switch to lipo's in the future Ive dumped about 1300 dollars into this beast beefin it up and now I think its ready for a good boost in raw power. Heres the kicker I am in Iraq and need to be able to have the system shipped to an Apo, Ae address. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This forum is awesome and I look forward to sharing my bashing, racing, and breaking stories with you all. Thanx

I would recommond a mamba max esc and a 9xl motor for your maxx, and that would give you about 100 bucks left over to spend on batteries.

Upgrades/hopups.
You can get merchandise shipped to an APO from Tower Hobbies. They carry the Mamba Maxx system, and the Novak line of brushless systems as well. I am willing to bet that you will find something to work for you at theri site.

Your budget of $350 is possible... maybe. What speeds are you looking for? Higher speed (over 40mph) is gonna need power and the MM can't handle the voltage or current for really high power/speed systems. That kind of stuff can get expensive.
For a budget system, the MM ESC and a 8XL or 9XL would be the thing like Gmaxx said. Watch temps and gear appropriately. However, you are already running 14 cells. The newer batches of the MM will only run up to 12 cells. But, some people are saying it handles more voltage after the newest firmware update. You might want to check more into this. 4s lipo is ok though either way. |
Ive checked out the Novak HV High-Voltage Brushless System 4.5. Has anyone tried this and if so what did you think? I could probably dump a couple more $ if I had to but trying not to. As far as speed, Going 40+ I'm not gonna lie I'd like that but not enough to set a couple hundred bills on fire. I guess I am interested in a system that will handle some abuse be quicker off the line and have a longer run time in between battery changes. I think the lipo switch will have to come sooner.

Hopefully this helps some:
Novak systems which are easy "plug and play". These are sensored motors and will have no cogging. Being a smaller motor they compensate for lack of torque with a higher KV. Higher KV motors tend to run hotter. With the higher KV there are greater RPMs per volt, and as such you need to gear down much more, which generates the torque. Most other BL motors have a larger magnet which generates more torque, so you don’t need to gear down as much. There are two motors which work well with the E-Maxx: the HV 6.5 which is better for bashing and the HV 4.5 which is better for racing. The 4.5 will have more top end. On 4s the speed controller may run hot and require some type of cooling such as a fan, body vents or heat sinks. I found one reference for the 4.5 of 750 watts of power and 40 oz of torque. These motors will come packaged with a speed controller and are more economical. http://www.teamnovak.com/ 2. Feigao motors will have more torque than the Novak motors but can also run hot. Again, because of this inefficiency they may need cooling modifications such as fans, vents, heat sinks. The end bells are pressed on and may require a clamp to prevent failure. There are three motors which work well with an E-Maxx. The 8 XL on 4s, the 9 XL on 5s, and the 10 XL on 6s. I found one reference for the 9XL of 52 oz of torque. http://www.feigao.com/sdp/85838/4/pl-102732.html These motors run well with a Mamba Max speed controller. The MM esc is programmable and has more setup options then the Novak and therefore it gives you greater control. However, above 3s it will require a battery elimination circuit or bec. http://www.castlecreations.com/products/mamba_max.html |
im running a mamba max with a feigao 8xl and 4cell and im very happy, much better than stock thats for sure well worth it.:yipi:
|
Well I've done some research, and I decided with the Novak HV 4.5 set-up. Now to find the cheapest site.
|
No offense to the ladies, but I feel like a chick (I just changed my mind). I do believe I am going with what Gorillamaxx360 recommended.....I think. still researching
|
If you want Novak, I'd personally go with the 6.5. From what I've read, the 4.5 seems a bit sensitive to gearing.
Still, with the choices being the Novak vs a MM/FeigaoXL combo, I'd go with the latter. |
for the risk of sounding well...dumb the MM your talking about is the Castle Creations Mamba Max ESC, correct? I'm checkin one out on monster as we speak
|
Yup, MM=Mamba Max ESC.
|
Thanks BrianG, I think I'm going to purchase the set-up here in the next hour or so. do you know of a good site, that will have everything I need?
|
And I did pick up on the emphasized "M" in Mamba and Max I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a Wierd alphanumeric code or nomenclature I needed to be aware of.
|
lol, no, no code. Most of the abbreviations are pretty straightforward.
|
Thanks, I am about to purchase the MM now. I am looking for the 9XL, alot of places are out of stock. Then grabbin a battery. Well see what happens.
|
you will be happy with the mamba max and feigao motor, just watch out for those very big jumps,my emaxx is temp. out of service, gotta get some rpm stuff!
|
Big jumps! What happened?
|
going pretty fast hit a plastic bike ramp wrong and landed on the right wheel, broke a a arm,and broke the plastic servo saver arm,had to wait a week to get the parts, that was the hard part, but its back on the dirt, love that feigao, did you get yours yet?
|
Well I purchased the MM and the feigao 7xl, now to find a li-po that will be adequate.

I run maxamps, not a racer, so they are good bang for the buck, plus, Austin is great! 2 x2s2p 8000mah |
At 150 bucks a pop I hope they have a good bang for the buck. I think I'll take my time to get those, I may have to use that money in divorce court after my wife finds out how much I've put into my maxx. Thanks for the info neweuser.

How about TrakPower 2s packs at $120 ea? Little cheaper and excellent batts.

I appreciate the info mkrusedc, and don't worry lincpimp I'm not gonna f up the rotation.

I did end up going with Maxamps, I saw a kit with charger, battery, and a few other doodads. I brought the truck out last night and um.. Holy #$%@!!!:surprised:Very happy with the brushless switch. Thank you for all the info. Now its time for me to upgrade the tires, cause the ones I have now... They aint gonna make it.
|
You know, Ive read some bad things about the quality of maxamps LIPO's. But none even close to the little oops I ran into.
When I received my battery pack I went ahead an charged It per the instructions. Set up my MM esc with the required info and ran the truck for about 5 min. Hence the Holy #$%@!!! Post, Then I ran it the next day and after 3 min. it stopped. After checking the truck to ensure It wasn't a connection that I had made. I checked the battery only to find out that a tab on one of the cells was burned off. WTF was my first reaction. Has anyone had this problem before? And before you ask I wasn't running it hard, and there were no jumps, or hard starts on high traction surfaces, involved on either of the short runs. Oh and what kind of transmitter/receiver recomendations do you all have. |
