Savage on 6s which motor, 10XL or KB45 8XL???

My setup is....

FLM extended 12-13lb Savage
zippy-R 4500 21c 6s lipo
Turnigy HV 100amp 2-12s lipo esc
cc ubec

Which motor do I want, a feigao like a 10XL or something or go with the big can KB45 8XL? Will there be a big power difference between these two motors, they both have very similar kv ratings. I leaning towards the feigao 10xl because the heatsink clamp that I already have will fit it and mainly because there are specs on it showing that its max amp draw is only 66 amps which is way below my esc's ratings.

I dont know if the kb45 8XL will draw too many amps and not have a reliable system. And they are priced about the same so I am kind of torn between the two at the moment, any help on picking the right motor will be greatly appreciated.

My number one priority is reliability, my last setup of cc phoniex 125 esc and 7Xl on 5s lipo cogged like crazy no matter what esc settings I used, I think the motor was just too hot especially considering the voltage being used on it.

I think that a 10XL would be too hot for that setup. I'd go with an 11XL.

and yeah, the 7XL 5S combo was WAY too hot. 5S + 10XL is a nice running system.

i agree id go with the 11xl its should run nice and be very reliable

Yep, 11xl would be the way to go on 6s. I have the same setup and will be using a 14xl on 9s or 10s.

I take it the big kb45 8xl 1700kv is also too hot for a 6s setup???

Is a 11XL and 6s setup going to be faster than a really fast nitro engine? With my previous setup of 5s and 7XL when it wasnt cogging which was 99% of the time I could tell its power would totally destroy any nitro engine out there.

I plan on sticking my cc phoniex 125 esc and feigao 7XL in my jammin buggy and using mechanical brakes on a 4s lipo setup, hopefully that setup wont be too hot and work good. The 7XL with 14 gp3300 cells worked fine with the phoniex in my savage it just wasnt all that fast, but my buggy is alot lighter than my savage.

The kb45 8xl would be fine I think. I think the 7XL/4S combo will be a good one too.

Yeah the 11XL/6S will be fast. Faster than you want, probably.

There is a HUGE difference in power output between a Feigao 540XL and the KB45XL . Just out of curiosity I bench tested a KB45/10T spinning a 14/6 aircraft prop , you may not see it in the video but it turned that prop with as much ferocity as a 60size nitro motor

Now the kb should be more powerful than the feigao. However, it uses a 6mm shaft and 30mm bolt pattern for m4 thread screws. That means that it will not bolt up to the motor mount, or use std pinions.

Main problem is the larger diameter, which will most likely cause the battery not to fit in the chassis. I was going to use a kb xl in my savage and then found the motor issue with the batteries. Now I am using an aveox 1300kv motor on 8s lipo. Same diameter as a feigao xl, so my batterys will fit.

My Savage broke the magnet of a Feigao 12XL on 10s2p A123 geared for 60-70mph, but my KB45 10XL has been pushing the truck just fine, doing the same thing. It doesn't even get as hot

I have a kershaw design motor mount so its way out of the way of the battery. And drilling a new hole for the kb45 motor isnt a problem nor is turning the shaft down to 5 mm for me. The thing I am worried about the most with the kb45XL is will the can fall apart without a clamp like a feigao motor does during a crash?

If the kb45 8XL is more powerfull and runs cooler that sounds what I want especially on a big heavy 13lb savage thats locked in second gear.

The only thing I see with the KB is the amp draw. 136 according to that video and on a svage I would imagine it would be a good bit more since the load will be alot more.

hmmm....

Thats not good, I need LOW amps with a 100 amp plane esc. I think I will stick with either a feigao 10XL or 11XL.

That was a huge load on that motor spinning a 14 inch prop , no Fiegao's would have even come close to swinging it that fast and the amp draw would have gone well beyond what the KB drew given the same load . all motors have there sweatspots and ultimate setups KB's would be good on models that go well beyond the 10 pound mark . I have had both motors taken apart to compare the guts and the KB is is atleast 50% larger than a Feigao

lincpimp 03.03.2008 06:02 PM

Ok, so the kb may be the better choice. If you can mount it and turn the shaft down you should be good to go. I would suggest a higher mah lipo, as that one you listed is only good for around 2.5hp, and that is pushing it.

tashpop 03.03.2008 07:48 PM

what about going with the 1200kv kb45xl and using higher voltage? i have the 1700kv in my maxx and its a monster. running 6s2p a123, so a little lower voltage, i put it on a whatt meter and it pulls over 1100 watts with the wheels off the ground. i couldn't run fast enough to see what it does under load since the meter doesn't log anything. i wouldn't choose the 1700kv on a 100amp esc, although i ran mine for a while on a bk9920 on 5s2p and it seemed to do fine until i hit some water.

also, as far as the motor coming apart, mine did on the front endbell. it would pop over the threads and start to spin. some thread lock fixed it.
