Neu 1515 vs 1512
I have a Losi 8T with a Neu 1515 1.5D and a mamba max. This thing has WAY too much power with the punch control turned off. It is raceable with the punch control around 50%. It seems like a waste of motor to have to hold it back like that. Do you guys think a Nue 1512 2D with punch control off will be comprable to the 1515 at 50% punch? Would I get more run time? Will the 1512 overheat?

Very curious about this. I am contemplating an 8ight-T conversion myself and trying to decide what to run in it.

I can't give you a comparison because I've never used a 1515, but I did have a 1512 in my truggy (TT ST-1), and it had plenty of power without overheating.

Seeing how powerfull the 1515 is in a truggy it makes me wonder if the 1512 is more than needed for racing in a buggy. Anyone running a 1509 in a buggy?

There is a lot of talk about this over at the RC Tech 1/8 conversion thread:
http://www.rctech.net/forum/showthre...58327&page=148 It sounds reasonable to me that the 1509 would be more drivable in a buggy and the 1512 for a truggy. Problem is, none of this has been tested. We raced last summer with MM/1512/4s combos in our buggies with great success. 20-25 minute mains without thermal (about 165 degrees F on average). I think a 1509 in a buggy would run hot, but I have no scientific proof. I also think a 1512 would be too small for a truggy. Just my opinion, again. I run a 1515 1.5d/f in my truggy and have no problem at all with the power. The tires stay firmly planted to the track. I have no punch control other than my trigger finger. I think a lot of guys need to use the throttle finger more effectively. |
Happywing what truggy are you racing? What kind of batteries and whats you run time?

Please judge for yourself:
11lbs Truggy with Neu 1512/2Y (1400kv) with 10s1p A123 geared 1:16,8: clip1, clip2, clip3 Same Truggy with Neu 1515/2Y (1100kv) with 10s1p A123 geared 1:12,13: clip1 From my point of view. i had fun with the Neu 1512 and now with the Neu 1515. Both are capable to push a heavy truggy with authority. Both motors can wheelie a heavy center diff driven truggy. But you can gear the Neu 1515 taller to reach higher speeds and it will stay somewhat cooler. Going from mid speed to top speed feels more powerfull with the Neu 1515. I had power peaks up to 2.5Kw with both motors. I have another battery set which makes the car by far more controllable, as it's only able to provide up to 1,4KW. Top speed is the same, but acceleration is more reasonable. A weaker battery might be an option. As strange as it may sound but if i gear my Neu 1515 setup down to 1:14,56 it will not wheelie as much either. Maybe because tire ballooning is not as high as with the 1:1213 gearing. |
Did you get better run time with the 1512?
|
Good question. I have 180 recorded runs (eagletree datalogger) of my truggy but all of them are hard to compare with each other as i'm not driving on a racetrack. When pushing the truggy hard with the Neu 1512 runtime was between 6.5-8.5 minutes. This is about the timeframe i get with the Neu 1515. i can not see a noticeable difference.

To follow up with happywing's comments, these are good questions.
There are about 20 of us in the area with converted buggies and 4 Truggies including happywings. All are used racing. We all have the same powertrain and we all think it is perfect for racing. Too powerfull means to me that you have a lot of trigger control to work out. Only one of the guys drove outdoors before the winter sent us indoors and he tq'ed against a lot of good nitro truggy guys without ever driving a truggy before. The temps all held well and the motor didn't feel strained. For bashing, you could use anything because there is nothing to compete. Racing is a different story and as the summer goes on this year we will see more and more converted truggies. This will be the 3rd year outdoors with the buggy and the 1st year outdoors for the truggy. The winter with the truggy was better than the all the buggy runs. We all use the 1515 1.5 D, 4s with a 10T to 12T pinion. Overall outdoors with the enerland 4s 5000 we can expect a good 15 minutes in a "racing" condition. |
