Adding FETs to an ESC?

Hey guys, I've been a lurker around here for some time (lots of good info). This is I think my second post, but anyways.

I have a question for you guys, since you all seem to definitely know what you're doing.

Would it be possible to parallel the FETs (through "stacking" with some of the same exact FETs, one on top of each original FET) on something like a Novak XBR ESC to get double the amp handling capabilities? I'm curious, because I do have an XBR sitting in my TT-01, and I need something to tinker with...:diablo:

I understand that FET stacking would accomplish this (not unlike what people do to their Mini-Zs so that they can use hotter motors).

So, would it be worth it? The ESC is long out of warranty, so if I fry it, it'll cost me all of 50 bucks or so. I have a Novak HV that is fried already (don't ask), so it'll give me an excuse to kill two birds with one stone.

Thanks in advance ya'll!

I know griffinRU has success with stacking powerboards on the MM esc to double the amp handling, but stacking the actual FETs them selves could be somewhat more difficult. I believe it depends on the layout of the powerboard, but ideally you would use 2 identical units and stack one atop the other, then solder on the brain board using extended buss-bars, and then the power & motor wires so that they bridge the sandwich as it were. Novak do tend to over-rate their stuff though- the Hvmaxx is rated at 400amps (which would make it the best esc ever almost), but in reality it is only good for 75amps due to the FETS used and case design....

^They probably did that because nothing could supply that kind of power at the time it was released (main stream wise) any ways. Good thing I found this site!

I'm not familiar with the novak fets (or fet drivers) but I did make an attempt at "stacking" some fets on a Mamba Max. I was unsuccessful as the fets are a smt (surface mount type) and attaching leads to bridge between the fet connectors proved exceedingly difficult.

If the novak fets are old school ( with the contacts hanging off as opposed to tucked underneeth ) you could propably pull it off.

we use to stack fets on xmods, lol. always worked. Like DrKnow said though, they need to be the type with the contacts sticking out the sides.

That is exactly what I'm asking if I can do.

I'll have to take a look at the ESC when I get home; it's not here with me at the moment.

Thanks for the help guys!
