What to do, E-Revo or Conversion
 

Two days ago things were so clear for me, and now I'm totally confused. I was prepared to get a Platinum Revo and convert it to Electric. I was planning to use one 4s battery. Now I'm no so sure I want to convert, looking at the E-Revo, there are many things I like, some I don't.

I will narrow my question to the forum to just one issue - batteries. I plan to race this in the PMT class (Production Monster Truck.) For most club races, the main is 10-20 mins long. When I was thinking conversion, I figured I could likely get away with some light(er) 4000-5000mAH batteries and possibly make a pit half way. With the E-Revo using two packs it makes a pit twice as time consuming. That alone is the single biggest reason I'm leaning toward the conversion. What do you guys think?

Anyone out there making a SOLID 20 mins on one pack? What capacity?

I would say that a 4000 6s 25c battery would give you a solid 20mins at racing speeds, 35-40mph. It would not be very light though.

I would go with the nitro conversion. Use a tekno battery tray and esc mount, Rcm motor mount, and lock it in 2nd gear. If you prefer you colud leave the 2speed and mech brakes, but that will add weight.

The MMM should be your best bet, if it lives up to its specs. Since it has the gfan and onboard bec it will save weight and most likely run cool enough to use the motor brakes. A neu or plett will be necessary if you want to keep motor temps in check over a 20min race, and the added effecientcy will help with runtime. Something around a 1500kv motor on 6s lipo will be your best bet.

I am sure some neu users will chime in, and let you know what works best.

I think I will go ahead and share my conversion with you guys. I bought a revo 3.3 roller off ebay that had the tekno battery tray, tekno servo mount, and rc-monster motor mount installed. The tranny was already locked into 2nd and I added a custom 1/8th center diff inside. For electronics I am using an MGM16018 with a Neu 1515/2.5D on a single 5000maH 6s lipo. It has tons of power and can easily probably last 25min on a single charge.

In my opinion I would much rather a conversion than the new e-revo mainly because the center diff and easy access to a single battery on one side where I can charge it without even removing it from the vehicle.

I will probably start a thread on my conversion soon. It will have more detail and pics of my revo but I want to completely get it finished to how I like it first.

I have a similar setup with my project, I just dont have a real CD I am using the Traxxas one, I dont have a radio or ESC yet, I am planning on the MMM esc and a Futaba FASST 2.4GHZ radio

Like they say about the Jato coversions, no need to convert one now that the rusty has a VXL.:lol:

The conversion gives you a chance to build something unique, unless you go with one of the kits that's out there. I really enjoyed building my E-Revo, and I don't think I'd ever buy Traxxas' RTR even if I do build another. But that's coming from someone who already built one. If I hadn't already built one, I can imagine myself being excited about Traxxas' RTR.

I'd pick up a Gorilla-revo - One was going on here for 150! that should be up at 250+ There will be some bargains ATM

I'd go ahead and give the new e-revo a shot. The hardened gears in the tranny should be nice, and I like the chassis layout for balance and such. could be fun at stock while you put together a brushless setup for it. Besides, I just want someone to buy one!!!

I enjoyed building mine as well. Had Traxxas come out with there's sooner I would have probably just bought it. Now that the build is complete and I have some track time I would say I would build over buy....

Tekno conversion/ mgm 16018 / neu 15151y / 4s 6000 mah / mech brake / tranny locked in 2nd / no diff..... I do get a solid 20 minutes...

I usually take 1 warm up lap....Then sit and wait for the nitro guy's :surprised:

I was at the RCX in Pomona this weekend and Traxxas stole the show. The E-Revo is perfect in my opinion and I will be getting one as soon as they hit the market. I am glad someone finally did it right. Way to go Traxxas.

I like the new e-revo but I wish they had used a metal chassis to build on....we see how the plastic has already broken on the e-maxx.....for cheapness of production I see why they did it, but we will see how the plastic holds up in real world....I would not by the e-revo for anything other than another "plastic" basher type RC....with all the BL power coming our way it needs to be truggy tough and you don't se any truggies chassis made of plastic...I love the waterproofness part but limited to the evx2 (only waterproof esc you have for now)

I'm finishing up my own conversion (basically the MMM and 9XL on 4s 8000), and while at first I was pissed that Traxxas introduced the E-Revo, I don't really mind now.

I mean: I wanted it brushless, no doubt in my mind. So even if I got the E-Revo, I'd still need the 9XL, the MMM, the Lipo and a 2.4GHz radio. Since I got a very good deal on a very fine roller, I'd say my finished brushless conversion will be cheaper than buying the official E-Revo and converting it to brushless...

I think you will be happy with your converted revo....I think when everyone is racing them the converted ones will rise to the top due to being a little lighter and tougher then the production e-revo....not that the e-revo is junk, just more for the masses to be afordable
