Making The Right Neu Motor Choice?
 

I am saving up for a monster max combo. I was wondering if it is really worth it to use 6s on the 1515 1y instead of using 4s on the 1512 1y. What kind of preformence difference will there be? I will monst likely be running this combo in a 1/8 truggy, probably a Ofna Jammin.

It is more common to see a 1515 in a truggy and a 1512 in a buggy

The 1515 1Y on 6s will blow the 1512 1Y on 4s away. A better comparison would be the 1515 vs. the 1512 each on 4s, because their internal resistances are practically the same, meaning that when you gear the 1515 to match the speed of the 1512 you will use the same amount of current from the battery. I don't see why you can't run the 1512 1y on 5s though, which would still be pretty sick. However the 1515 might be better for a truggy because you would have more gearing options.

6s is too much battery for the 1515/1Y, you will be wasting a lot of the power generated by the motor in excessive wheel spin and not being able to control the vehicle

Would I see good preformence with the 1515 1y with 4s in a 1/8th truggy? I am looking looking for around 45mph.

The 1515 1.5D/F on 4s will give you what you are looking for.

I'm starting to go away from 1515/1512 for truggy/buggy... and thinking that 1512/1509 is actually a good choice. I have not run these setups yet myself but I have talked to guys who have and it sounds good.

I agree 6s is "too much" on the 1515 1Y 2200kv... unless you are bashing for giggles.

4s is plenty on that kv (1515 or 1512... truggy or buggy)

If you want to go 6s... I suggest getting a 1600-1700kv motor. Heck, I run a 1650kv 1515 on 4s and it's ok for racing with a 14-16 tooth pinion.

i to am thinking of getting a 1512 for my truggy, i will only be running it on 4s and will mainly do club races and open practice at local tracks

i know that a 1515 1y is like the industry standard for truggy on 4s but.....

will the 1512 2.5d (2050kv) be enough for track and fun bashing , it may not be as effeciant as the 1515 , but may be more driveable

The 1512 is fine for a truggy. That motor has gobs of torque, almost too much for a buggy. I am getting a 1509 for my buggy and will probably just use my 1512 in my truggy when I finish it.

It's taken a long time to overcome the Feigao/Hacker effect of having to run big heavy motors. We started with the big 1515.. it's the safe choice and can handle a LOT. Then we started to try the 1512s for buggy.... found out they do great. Then found out some were running the 1512 in truggies and monster trucks. Hmmm... so we started to look at the 1509 and scratch the ol head wondering if it's possible.....

I have yet to run mine, but now that I have it in my hands, I have no doubts the 1509 will do a buggy just fine. It doesn't "look" dramatically smaller than the 1512 so I feel better now, lol.

Can you say 1506 on 6s? I think that is next, believe it or not... :)

For bashers and newbies... I still tend to recommend bigger motors for more headroom... the same reason Castle went big with their 1515 size motor. I have doubts they will give in to a 1509 size. It's not "supposed" to be enough motor to handle a 1/8 car.

I don't doubt that 1512 for truggy and 1509 for buggy can work. The problem is that there is not enough proof that it will indeed work. I would not be comfortable making that recommendation to someone until I see more proof, or better yet, try it myself. I used a 1512 2D (MBX5 buggy) last summer and experienced motor temps as high as 180*F after long mains on hot days. This is with conservative gearing.

I am going 5s on my 1515 1y. That puts me right at 40700 rpm which is right about where Neu's are supposed to be most efficent.

I'm just curious where 40k comes from as a good efficiency number? I always remembered reading here that most people shot for the 30-35k range for BL motors.

For feigao motors 30-35k is the range to shoot for.

I have several friends that fly heli's and run neu motors at upwards of 50k rpms with no problems at all. I also run a 1515 1Y in a revo and for bashing find that 5s is just right. For racing I would likely drop to a 4s pack though as 5s would be over kill for all but the largest tracks.

Thank you for all of the great information! It looks like I am going with the 1515 1y, just because I will feel better with the larger can. Does anyone know the exact length difference in the 1515 and 1512 cans? I will get the 1515 1y test it on 4s, and if that is not enough I will boost it up to 6s. I hope castle comes out with their motors soon.:whistle:
