Kyosho Inferno ST for Losi XXX NT
I made a deal last night with a guy for a Kyosho Inferno ST US Sports. I think I got a good deal. Don't know what I have to give the neighbor yet because I traded his Losi XXX NT and my JR xs3 radio w/ Novak XXTra rcvr for the Kyosho. The NT wasn't in the greatest shape no radio with it. I'll have to see what they've been going for on ebay. I was thinking somewhere between 100 - 150. It had the original mach .15 in it and the tires were crap. I'll see if I can dig up a picture of it. In the mean time what would be a fair price for a XXX NT?
The ST is brand new with the GXR28 in it. Hasn't even been started yet. I let him keep the radio system and servos out of it and will use the spektrum radio in it and pick up some decent servos. I talked about doing some trading before he got frustrated with it. The pull start is having problems (the reason it hasn't started yet). So I didn't take advantage of him at his weakest moment when he gave up on it starting. That would just be wrong. Wouldn't it? Tough call because you want to catch them before they start throwing it. Anyways he said he's been wanting a XXX NT for a while. I just so happened to have the neighbors setting on a shelf. I confirmed the neighbor would sell it to me for a fair price and the deal was made. I bought a Duratrax Raze truggy to beat up and experience the Nitro fuel for a while. I was going to convert it to electric when the engine gave out. Change of plans now. Will be converting the Inferno to electric now. I see shark413 did a converson on the ST-R and didn't want to pollute his thread with questions. I have a few questions for those of you familiar with the Kyosho series. From what I gathered so far it looks like the ST US Sport is the low end and the ST-R's climb the ladder in price. Are the parts from the ST-R - RR upgrades and do they fit? Is there a drill type start conversion that I can put on the GXR3 engine? Is the GX3R engine any good? Any idea what the engine may be worth? It would probably be best to not even mess with the engine and sell it as is. Where is that post. "Used and New, Mom said it was okay" Any thoughts comments on the Inferno ST or Kyosho? I've never owned one so would like to know what your experience with the products are. Shark413 your conversion looks real good. Laying the servo down and all. I Hope you don't mind some questions thrown your way. |
I found the used and new for sale thread, just wish my mom would let me tell lies like that...
I usually sell the motors brand new, never run. That way if something is wrong it is up to the new owner to get the mfg to fix it, not me! |
Yeah that was a funny link you gave us. Thanks for the tip on selling the motor. You got about every RC out there. What you thoughts on the Inferno? Decent Truggy?

the us sports is a decent handling rig, motor isn't bad power at all. the odd 19mm hex hubs means you need to buy kyosho rims or do a 17mm hub swap. the chassis is a little shorter as well but there is a conversion kit to change the chassis, driveshaft and braces for about $100

Hi, my brother has a Kyosho Sport. The engine was pretty good, ran strong, easy to tune and he put many gallons thru it without issue. Then one day .. boom .. main bearing blows. Kyosho uses some weird non-standard sized bearing, we couldn't find one anywhere (even contacted Kyosho USA). Also, the pull start is also very unusual, most have a one way bearing that grabs when you pull, and freewheels when the engine starts. The Kyosho Sport has a system that disconnects from the engine when it starts, no one-way bearing. So now it just sits, and he now has a Jammin CRT. Feel free to ask questions.

THanks fellas. I was given the impression this was a ST-RR at first. Still a decent buy for what I gave for it. I'm finding the lhs doesn't carry much Kyosha either. I have been reading some about the inferno us sport. One review indicated the spiral gears for the diffs were great but they only installed 2 spider gears. The sticker price was about the same as the RAZE I got. I will see the difference between the two I am sure once it's broken in. One thing about the Raze. The parts are very inexpensive. Can get four preglued 17mm tires and rims for $26. Tower had a sale on the parts and I stocked up on some spare parts. Thier differntial gear set is only 1.25. Going to see if I can use them anywhere else. I'll have to see if I can use the raze 17mm to swap out.
Shark413. If I buy or need pars for this. Should I buy the st-r - rr parts for this one? I don't know if I am correct but it seems the r and rr are the upgraded versions so maybe their parts will all fit on it. May as well admit it. I'm confused. How many inferno versions are there? They list a 1/8 GP inferno, mp777, us sport, st-r st-rr. It has gotten me a little confused on what parts to look for. The pull start gave the previous guy problems and he has a new one nad some motor mounts. I idled a tanks through the motor yesterday and it the pull chord was a pain. I appreciate you offering up you experience with the Kyosha. I had a bunch of ? yesterday. Seems they have slipped me today. Once the $$ is available I am going to convert to electric. I didn't think I would get much for the engine so I'm going to break it in and run it nitro for a while. |
I have never taken a close look at my brothers Sport, I read the manual and it does appear to have spiral gears and only two spiders. Many of the parts are interchangable between the Inferno 777, Kanai 7.5 (buggies) and ST-R, ST-RR (truggies). The main difference between the sport and ST-RR is the quality of the parts and the chassis (ST-RR is longer). The ST-RR uses chromoly drive train parts, big bore shocks, milled 7075 alloy chassis, chromoly spiral gears, 4 spiders, etc. Many small differences as well, suspension parts are similar but the ST-RR has many more adjustments (more mounting holes), things like adjustable turnbuckles, Bonded semi-metalic brake pads, etc. The SPort is a good starter truggy and think of the ST-RR as a optioned out version. To fully convert a sport to ST-RR level would cost more than buying a ST-RR in the first place. So I would enjoy the SPort as is and convert it to brushless down the line.

Thanks for helping clear up the various infernos. I will take your advice and have a little fun this one as is. Nice job on your conversion.

What a pita that motor on the Kyosho has been. I've been having a hell of a time with it. Got it tuned in once for a day. Got so frustrated with it I forgot about my electric conversion plans and bought a Axial .28 to run in it. Looks like I'll have to burn some nitro this summer. I've done some research on found that the major differences between the ST-RR and the US Sport is the chassis and chassis rear brace along with the rear cvd, extra gears in the diffs and some big bores which aren't cheap. AMAIN sells a conversion kit for 170 I think it was. But can pick up the parts seperately off ebay for less. Even the US Sport handles great, looking forward to getting the st-rr parts to see how much better it does.

dragon racing sells a longer chassis for them as well as a replacement for the sports. I made a deal for a sports and before it arrived got 2 sets of tires/rims with 17mm hex and then saw those 19mm hexes and was like, they haven't used 19 since the turbo burns lol or the original duratrax axis buggy... I just sold it off super cheap to someone that was gong to covert t himself, and went and bought a new buggy to convert, my RC8

I picked up some 23mm adapter to use. I got some badlands on 23mm rims. The work pretty good on there. I'll have to check out the dragon racing.
What other big bores would work with the Kyosho Inferno? The Kyosho big bores seem expensive. Would the Jammin x1x big bore work? They seem to be going for a little less then the Kyoshos. This could definately use some on the rear. |
Gee, I use CEN 1/8 scale buggy/truggy shocks on my Kyosho buggies. The CEN shocks are actually not bad and can be found on EBay pretty cheap. They are inbetween the old big bore standard (14mm diameter shock bodies) and the new Kyosho Big bore shocks (18mm bodies) the CEN shocks measure 16mm. The pictures show the difference in size between Kysoho and CEN 1/8 scale shocks.

Thought I saw some CEN big bores on ebay earlier when I was searching. I'll take another look. Thanks.
