Anyone here live in Seoul?
 

The reason i ask is because my wife and i are going to Seoul in October and i would like to find out if there are any good RC shops or RC tracks around or near the Namdaemun Market or the National Museum? We will be staying at the Best Western Premier Kukdo in this area so it would be nice to check out the local RC scene while we are there.

I believe Jerry2kone is moving to Seoul soon. I know of a few hobby shops in seoul, but unfortunately I don't know the addresses to any of them. On the bright side, I found a few useful sites for you.

hey MikeD thanks for the PM to lead me to your thread. I had not seen this one yet today. yes we are moving there in August. We were actually posted there a few years ago, but I was only at post for about 8 months myself, before we moved to Brussels (just married). My wife gave me my first E-Maxx for my birthday later that year. So I was not even into R/C when we were there last time. I have no ideas about shops or tracks, but I have been told that the R/C community there is huge. It only makes sense since 75% of all R/C stuff comes out of either China or Korea. From what I understand the aftermarket R/C business is the biggest in the world.

There is one guy here on RCM that has contacted me before who is from Seoul and he told me that there are tons of tracks and clubs there to get involved in. I will look back and see if I can find anything on him. I am surely looking forward to going this time and getting involved at some level with their R/C community since my interest and investment are well grounded now, plus my two boys (11 & 12)are going to be a big part of the hobby as well. I am hoping that I can get something started on the base once some of the guys there get a look at my toys. Seoul is a large post and most of the soldiers there are on unacompanied tours (single) due to it being a hardship post. There is a pretty big Army garison on the Yongsan base where we will be living and there is a lot of room for placing some kind of track. We shall see.

If you do find some shops I would look into picking up some stuff while you are there like the new Quark Mk111 ESC. It is suposed to be the bomb as far as speed controls go. SO when will you be there? We do not arrive until mid August. We have a few other stops to make along the way first like DC, Vegas, California, and Hawaii. FUN FUN FUN uh, oh yea and more FUN. Let us know here what you find when you go. Have a great time Seoul is pretty cool. I had some stuff made there last time custom made suits and two tuxidos for very low prices.:lol:

Thanks for responding. I will be there from October 5th through the 14th. I have thought about bringing one of my RC's and seeing if i can find a track near by. Not sure how strict the airlines are about flying with RC's/radios/batteries, etc... It will be interested to see what kind of stuff they have. There is a very good chance that i will be bringing some RC stuff home, maybe a kit or two. Four stops on the way huh, wow! I want your vacation time. Hawaii is a blast and California is awesome and just to point out the obvious there is a huge RC scene there. I just got back from San Diego and i could not believe how many people i saw playing with there RC's while out and about. And of course i could not bring mine because i was out with my wife and son to see Legoland and the San Diego Zoo. Oh well next time i go i will definitly bring my RC's and find a track to go to. So back to the subject if you do find any good information pass it along as i would greatly appreciate it.

ahhh... Itaewon... you can find anything there. Its basically Seoul's garment/household item district. I have a tailored suit from there as well. I also bought a Tommy Hillfiger jacket from there which turned out to be a fake. I didn't find out until I had it dry cleaned and the cleaner told me that the Hillfiger label was merely sown on top of another generic label... I got owned. :lol:

MikeD, just watch out for the drivers. The drivers in Seoul are down right crazy. I'm not even joking. Stereotypical... yes, but think about this... I'm korean and from los angeles... The drivers there scare the sh!t out of me. :oh:

I'm not sure what to say about that. :oh: I won't be driving in Seoul but as a pedestrian i'll definitly have to watch out. Thanks for the heads up. Man i thought California drivers were the craziest. :na:

If you have never driven overseas you have no idea just how bad things can be. I have driven all over the globe and the drivers in the USA are quite tame compared to a lot of other countries. Here is Brussels they are ruthless in the city. Their game is intimidation. In Korea they are just plain nuts. I use to race Karts and when we were in Korea last time I was actually afraid to drive after seeing how the traffic was in the center of Seoul, Korea. Here in Brussels we purchased a 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan with dents already installed:lol:. Besides the fact that it makes people take a second look before trying to intimidate us, if I get hit I get hit. So my confidence level driving here has improved because I don't have to worry about getting hit. That makes people stay clear of our vehicle. In the USA we have very large roads in most places to accomodate the traffic. Yes we have traffic jams, but in Europe most of the roads are like alleyways that are barely big enough for one car on two way streets. It is hard to explain to anyone who has never been there. When I lived in Hawaii back in the early 80's the H-1 was bumper to bumper at 80 to 90 mph every single day. It was crazy, but now there are just way too many cars on the road there to go that fast anymore.

A couple of years ago when i was in Hawaii i rented a motorcycle with my wife to drive around the island while we were there and boy was i suprised at how crazy the drivers on the H-1 were. 80mph seemed like the minimum you could go without getting hit. This trip to Seoul is the first time that my wife and i will have been out of the good ol USA so i'm sure this experience will be an eye opener. But hopefully i'll come back with plenty of RC goodies.

yeah i hate traffic. I would like to go explore the world but being young and finshing up college it will have to wait for now. Cant imagine driving being worse though that is nuts. definitely would have to watch myself there
