Hyperion Charger

Hi, I have a hyperion DUO and have recently been paying a little closer attention to it charging my packs.

I've noticed that i kind of 'pulse' charges.. it goes full current for about a minute, then the current cuts back to zero for a few seconds, then its back on.

Also I'm a little concerned watching the balancer view, because it always takes the packs higher than they should go :( eg it will take lipo packs to over 4.3V before the CV starts, and A123 packs get to a hair over 3.7V. I thought it should be 4.2V and 3.6V resp?

Anyone else noticed any of this kind of behaviour? I run the latest firmware.

Yes don't worry it is just checking the voltage on the pack... It is normal

Might be worth giving them an email re 4.3v though...

I dont look at the VPC when I am charging but the toatal voltage and I am some where just over 16 volts for a 4s pack..this is for the single 0610i charger...no complaints though charger works great from my end

Got a reply from Hyperion the other day:

Hi,

The "pulse" is just the charging pausing for a moment so that load is off the battery, and therefore accurate battery voltage can be read. Normal, and good.

Recent firmware still shows voltages on the "inside" of the balancer circuit (which is what the charger needs internally to do its job), rather than at the cell itself. As such, (until firmware v1.5 is released next week) you will see voltages that are higher than actual cell voltages. However, 4.3v seems too high in any case. Have you confirmed the voltage at a cell (directly with voltmeter)? Let me know about that, pls.

David
I tried a few lipos and it was 1 pack which has a bung cell in it that does the 4.3V thing... there others were good. The A123 cells got as high as 3.77V though

Cool, just saw that the charger logging software was released beta recently too: http://media.hyperion.hk/dn/pc/all.htm
