Power supplies

Will this be compatible, work w/the Hyperion Eos1210 charger?

The output is 15v, which may be a tad too high. Many chargers trip the protection circuit at 15v. Although, the higher voltage would be good for keeping current down. That supply is only good for 150w max, but once you figure in charger efficiency, you only have 120w to charge the batts - and that's running at full tilt. The 1210 has a 180w limit, so you won't get the max output it is capable of...

Any others you recommend? I am only looking to get up to 8 amps through the charger, that's the max my batts are rated at.

I dont know if the 1210 is ant different but I have the 0610 and it will accept voltages up to 27 but depending on the pack you want to charge I wouldnt go any lower than a n 18amp supply and make sure it is a switching cc/cv PS

Just because the batts are 8A doesn't mean that's all the charger will pull from the power supply. It also depends on the pack voltage as well. A charger has a switching power supply to convert the 12v input to whatever output voltage needed for the pack you're charging. This is done via a switching power supply similar to how a UBEC functions. If it wasn't for this power supply, you would be limited to charging batteries at no higher than 12v, or just under 3s lipo (3 cells X 4.2v/cell = 12.6v).

Here's an example:

Let's say you have a 5s 8Ah pack. The max charging voltage will be 21v (4.2v X 5 cells). Then, you are charging at 8 amps. That's 168 watts (21v X 8A). The charger has to supply this power to charge your batteries.

Since your external power supply outputs 12v, you would need 14A. Actually, most chargers are about 80% efficient, so you really need 210w, or 17.5A @ 12v.

BTW: That 168w is not all the time. When you start charging, the pack may only be at 15v (3v X 5 cells). At 8A, that's 120w. At once the CC/CV threshold is reached at 4.2v/cell, the current drops steadily, and so does the power. That 168w is worst case.

You might wonder "why not just use higher voltage?". Well, some chargers can take up to 27v input, but most use 12v presumably to make them usable in the field running off your car battery.

im pretty sure (well the duo and 0610inet do) this charger accepts up to 28v input. im running a 14v 16a supply which will do for my needs (4sa123) but if i wanted to do higher voltage charging (even possibly 4s lipo) i would need to buy another. i figured this one i have is enough for now and $40 on a supply isnt too bad...

Thanks for the advice...I will look for a larger power supply

you could also use audio/ham/cb radio power supplies... made by pyramid and pyle, cascade.... they work great.. even the cheap pyramid ones..
Pyramid has a 25A power supply for about $70..

I use this one with a TP 1010C charger and I am very happy with it. Capable of pushing about 275 watts.

$100 to ship it over seas...thats more than what the PS costs.....

Makes it pretty plain they don't really want to ship anything international.

Those prices seem a little high - my ProPeak came from here, was about $65 delivered when I bought it over yr ago.

If you are really trying to save money just get a cheap 500W computer power supply and tap off the +12V and ground wires.

magman 07.04.2008 01:46 PM

I'll see if I can scrounge up an old computer if worst comes to worst....thanks.
