As everyone knows, my V2 died during calibration, though Patrick thinks that the series resistor had something to do with it. He also had some long technical explanation for it, but it's over my head. Bottom line: the man says don't do it, so DON'T!!! This should be sticky!! DO NOT USE A NO SPARK RESISTOR UNLESS PATRICK SAYS IT'S OK!!

So, I apologize to CC and Patrick, and while I don't think I was too hard on them, and that much of what I was saying was misunderstood, I don't think I helped anything, but man was I PISSED! Anyway, I think I'm ok now, and Patrick did the right thing without me even asking. I hope to be using my new one shortly, and tearing up the streets soon.

As I said B4, this was/is my 1st time dealing with this company, so I have no loyalty to them, and like all of us, I've been waiting for months, but this is all I have; I don't have a collection of other RC like many of us do. Simply put: I was frustrated!

Anyway, I'm glad everything is sorted out and hopefully will have fun when you get your MMM. Mine will probably arrive next week since I'm in the military stationed overseas but I still have my nitros to play with while waiting for the MMM.

Curious. Can you remember what he said about the resistor? If this is going to be a problem, I will have to put some kind of warning at the top of my "no spark" page...

I personally wouldnt have apologised to anyone except maybe mike cronin...the owner of this forum.

I don't suggest the "no spark" resistor for the MMM -- for a few reasons. First, the resistors that are suggested are WAY too big. They can cause the beeps (during startup) to cause a boost (with the motor inductance) that creates voltage spikes -- without the battery there to absorb them. -- So if you plug in through the resistor, the caps charge fully, then the ESC beeps the motor -- can cause enough of a "boost" spike to damage some of the more voltage sensitive parts.

Even just the brake turning on (which happens on power-up for safety reasons) can also cause a "boost" spike --

So to be safe, just say no to the resistor. :no:

Really, it's easy on the caps to charge fast -- they don't mind at all. :yes: It is hard on the connectors -- but connectors are cheap compared to ESCs... :wink:

BrianG - the resistor thing was something along the lines of screwin with the CPU in some way by not letting enough juice get through. Seriously, the more I try to remember about what he said, the more confused I get, so I think it's best to run it by patrick. I'm a BL/LiPo newbie too, so your page was where I got the idea from - it was the right thing to do ya know? So, I would post it, so other newbies don't do it too. In your defense, patrick was saying something about how the MMM was designed different, and the resistor thing works with other (castle) controllers, just not this one.

Thanks for the clarification. The resistors were sized so that the user doesn't have to sit there for a minute waiting for the caps to charge. But what you say makes sense. I wouldn't think this would cause a hard failure though - go figure. I'll post a note on my page advising against the mod on the MMM. Any other ESCs where this is a no-no?

And yes, the intent was to save the connectors from pitting caused by the initial arcing.

Mamba Max and Mamba Monster are the two I would NOT suggest using a resistor on. Phoenix-HV is OK with resistor, as are other Phoenix controllers.

K Brian you said we have to wait a minute for the caps to charge? I cant just plug in turn on and go? (that is what i have been doing with my v1 MMM)

i think he is talking about with the resistor :yes: i have an 8cap array, pluging it in is hard on connectors but i have yet to have one fail on me
