Just curious, what are the down sides/advantages to running a 1509 vs a 1512

Once in a while I think about putting a 1509 in my buggy...Anyone care to comment on the +/- of that compared to a 1512 assuming gearing was the same.

Negatives: Smaller can, so less torque for a given kv and less surface are for less power dissipation. Lower continuous power rating.

Positives: Lighter. Probably spools up faster.

Might be a decent choice if you're only looking for speeds around 30-35mph tops on a lightweight buggy (7-8lbs).

I was dead set on getting on for my 808, mainly to save another 58gms but I decided against it do to all of the negative things I’ve read about the 1509  (mainly Heat!) it get's real hot real quick in anything over 7.5 pounds. not that is just what I’ve read, I have not actually had one and cannot speak for it!.. however I do have two 1512 and love them (for what it's worth)

If you do get one!! PLEASE let us know how you like it (?)

We run the 1509's in our buggies with great success, barely more heat than a 1512 with lighter weight and usually less amp draw.

The 1509 is hit or miss. I ran a 1509 1y on 4s with great success. Really long run times. However, I know others have had heat problems. I have also run the 1512 1.5d and I currently run the 1512 2.5d. The 1509 is noticeably less torquey. However, the power delivery is smooth. You don't have that clear anything with 2 feet of run up power of the 1512, but still can smoke the nitros.

What I learned with the 1509 is that it is highly dependent on the track. It works perfectly for smaller tighter tracks but may not be enough power for larger tracks with bigger jumps and 150 foot plus straights.

The bottomline is I would get the 1512 as you know for fact it will work just fine whereas the 1509 may not work.

IMHO the 1512 2.5d is the most versatile motor for a buggy. Mated with 4s 5000 you can get 20 minutes of run time and run with all but the very fastest of nitros with no problems. Plenty of power. Drop in a 5s battery for a more punchy, embarrass the nitro power band. You can also run 6s with the 2.5d for stupid power.

Once I get my 1512 1Yf back from repairs,...:yipi:... I am going to try it on 5s and see what happens. For now, the 1509 will be on the back burner.

1509 in a touring car.

In a 5lb touring car built mainly for oval racing and big bashing speed runs, would a 1509 be enough to run cool despite being geared for the 50's.

Over the past year I've seen a bunch of threads about using a 1509 in a buggy and I think it's a little much. Rated at 750 watts in a 7+lb buggy I think it's bound to have heat issues for most.

I have a 1509 that I would think would rock in a smaller on-road or a 1/10 buggy.

For a 1/8 buggy i think a 1512 is a better choice for most.
