Cooling holes in the body , how many do this

Just contemplating if i should cut holes in the windscreen of my body for cooling of the esc , motor and batteries .Not that i'm having any heat issues but it's winter in Australia so don't know what it will be like in summer. Plus alot more dirt will get inside .

How many of you are running without any holes and no heat issues now that's it's summer for you US/European boys.

I like to do it just to keep everything a little cooler. ;) Most of the dirt on my cars comes in under the body. . .

I have holes in the windshield area, not to much of an issue getting dirt inside for bashing. If your racing that might be different, if you stay in front and don't get behind anyone you wouldn't have any dirt flying up on the windshield. Holes in the back would also work to let hot air out, just won't be getting as much fresh air I suspect. I do think that a few holes are necessary otherwise you create an oven, your body will just hold all the heat right on top of your electronics and motors. When I ran nitro I didn't leave much of a body on at all, my REVO 3.3 looked like a core truck at the end of a race, I had nothing that resembled the bed of the truck, I cut the body completely off after the cab area of the body, and it still ran hot! Nitro sucks!!! But a few holes shouldn't let to much dirt in and if you are worried, I suppose you could put some kind of filter behind the opening.

i cut out my windscreen on my hyper 7 (nitro) and used flyscreen mesh epoxyied onto it. kept the grass out, and most of the chunks of dirt and especially rocks. i hate rocks.

I cut holes when I had my 8xl. Now that I have my neu, I'm sure I don't need them. My motor doesn't get over 140.

there are definitely pros and cons. If you never get into water then a hole does keep things cooler. I noticed however that when the boys run through the puddles if they use the bodies with the hole in the windshield then it causes them to stall out.

I do dremel out cooling vents in my body's when I run my cheap equipment. No need for it with my mgm-neu combo's.

You could pick up some scoops/ducts from http://www.oocrcracing.com/
I have a bunch I havn't installed yet,savin for winter project.

Being winter i'll run it as is with no holes as i have no heating isssues . As summer approaches if i see the temps start going up on the elecs i'll put a hole in the windscreen.

Those OOC vents are great. I use them on my buggy. They let air in but help keep mud and stuff out. I'll post some pics later tonight of how I used them.

EDIT:

Here are a couple pics of the OOC vents installed. The big one on the side is the low profile scoop and the one at the side of the body twoard the front is the small NACA vent. You can se on the picture of the inside that I took the vent channel and angled it down so the air flowing into the scoop blows right on top of the motor to help keep it cool.

I cut a hole in my mbx-5. I run at a v/dusty track, so I am considering covering the hole back up. With my MGM /Neu set up I probably don't need a hole. With my MMM set up, I need a little more cooling.

Those body vents are neat, but would be a waste of money for me considering how long my bodies remain intact. :(

blueb8llz 08.22.2008 07:05 PM

i cut both front and rear windshield. i feel its worth it. doesnt get really dirt inside but occasionally ill find a few pepples. worth it in my opinion

coolrunnings 08.22.2008 11:58 PM

I know cutting vent holes does weaken your body a bit. I run proline bodies whenever I can and their tuff as nails.
