Lipo won't charge

I am still very new to the brushless game.. I was charging me 2s 4200 maxamps battery last night it was on the charger for 60 mins and it had only charged 440ma.. I used all of the default settings.. just before this I charged a 5s 5000 battery and it took 2200 and did it in like an hour or something.. I wasn't really paying attention.. Is this what battery does when it runs past it's low voltage protection?

What were your settings on your 2s charge?

lucias 08.22.2008 05:03 PM

mmm I think it was charging at 4.2 if I remember right.. I don't remember the rest off the top of my head.. it's a hyperion duo. i was only charging on battery..

Did you try discharging it a tad.

no I stayed up and finally I started to think about how long I had been out there waiting to finish then I went to bed..

Did it end the charge after the 420mah? If so it may have been almost at full charge already. The Mah that shows on the charger will just be the amount it puts in until the pack is at its full capacity. What did the TCS say?

440mAh put back in after one hour sounds a LOT like you might just have set the charge current wrong at 420mA instead of 4200mA.

maybe.. it didn't end I just turned it off.. I will look at when I get home hopefully that's just what i did..

That's exactly what I was thinking. 0.42A instead of 4.2A. :oh:

Yeah, hopefully it was just a settings error. I saw a guy who was new to lipos at the track set his charger to 38mAh instead of 3800mAh when he set the capacity. He too was complaining that it was taking forever, lol.

Can you imagine a 10-hour charge cycle??? :surprised:

Not the first to do this and certainly not the last....

BrianG 08.22.2008 07:54 PM

Yeah. I suppose it can be confusing to people new to the hobby. All this Ah, mAh, C, s, p, etc. It's too bad someone didn't make a tiny chip that could be mounted to the battery that would tell the charger what settings to use...

magman 08.22.2008 07:56 PM

Brian that is a great idea...no reason someone couldn't come up with something.

BrianG 08.22.2008 08:02 PM

It should be pretty easy to make the IC. Could even be as simple as a resistor network whose value tells the charger what to set. All you'd need is series cell count and pack capacity readings, so that's two channels. Then, the charger would need additional circuits to read this data.
