Lipo Swelling
 

I have 2 Zippy H 4S 5000mah lipos...

After running them, my temp gun always says they are between 90-115 degrees F...
Now...

After running the lipos they usually swell up slightly...but they always return to normal after roughly 15 minutes. They also have never gone below safe voltage, in fact, I have never completely run out one of these lipos yet..

Now is it normal for them to swell like this slightly? Its not alot of swelling, just enough that you can notice the cells rounding off at the flat tops just a little bit.

I had a thunder power pack do that once . I came to the cunclusion i was drawing the power out to fast for the battery to handle if that makes since. I have heard the get soft when they get heated up . I dont think that is normal . My 4s FP pack has never done that . What is the c raiting of your zippy pack ?.

The C-rating is apparently 20-30C...


Yes, the lipos also get soft.

Swelling LiPo is a red flag. It's not normal by any means. What setup are you using?

But the thing is they swell up slightly even when the temperature is just 100 degrees...

i would try a few runs with the lvc at 3.3 volts per cell and see if it helps


my maxamps do the same after a hard run(not swell but get soft), but i increased the lvc and they dont do it as bad



a 8xl is drawing alot and you are pushing your packs to there limit, by cutting your runs shorter you will make your packs last longer, the last little bit of energy in your packs (about 5 min.)is not worth them blowing up

But since I am considering getting a Neu motor, wouldn't the Neu be drawing more amps?...i'd think since they are more powerful? IDK...I had no clue what the amp draw of the 8XL was in the first place...

The amp draw of the NEu would be more and I would get some better LiPos if you were going to upgrade to a Neu

Which Neu motor are you getting? They are very efficient motors and may actually be easier on the battery. Another thing to consider is the controller. The MM will limit draw to a certain extent. If you were to go to a Monster Max, you would definitely be putting your batteries under more stress.

I just received my monster max and will be running it..

I was thinking of one of the 1512 motors, but i'm not sure if the 1512 series will work on a truggy since it may heat up too much under load??...
If not a 1512 series motor, 1515 1Y is my choice.

Somehow I missed that this was a truggy. The 1515 1y is a good choice. Add Monster Max and my advice is better batteries. It will be a nice setup.

Here, the problem is i'd be saving up for 5 months just to get two good quality packs. I am planning on racing in Dec. and I need to finalize my setup far before that.

I'd totally be up for "better packs" my budget will just not even allow it.

The best packs I could afford were these Zippy 4S lipos, that i bought used.
