Help! RIT dye mess up
I tried to dye a set of intigy bead locks - read: EXPENSIVE - and the chrome did'nt dye. I only did two so far and I don't want to mess up the second set. Is there a way to bleach it out or use RIT dye remover/stripper to undo it or am I f'd. The dye is just flaking off the chrome area and it looks terrible.
Here's what I did... -Got black RIT (bottle) added enough water to the dye to cover one wheel in a coffee can. -heated up to 200 (just before boil) and removed from heat and dropped in a wheel. -let it sit over night and removed the wheel. -washed off the wheel and the dye flaked off the chrome. My next option is to strip all wheels w/ acytone or something and re-dye w/ out the nice black chrome look. Any help or suggestions before I do this? |

You cant dye chrome. You have to strip it or use wht wheels. |
Yep can't dye chrome sorry .
The chrome flaking was from the heat of the water not the dye . Either use acytone or boil the wheels in water to remove the rest of the flaked chrome . |
It wasn't the chrome that flaked, it was the black dye on the chrome flaking off. The chrome shines through. I even rubbed off all the black on one wheel to see if I'd like the shadow effect of the black inside the wheel in the non-chrome areas.
I see a lot of guys...here and one in particular in the Monster Truck edition of Car Action magazine where he RIT dyed a set of chrome wheels to get a black chrome effect. It can be done, I just don't seem to be able to replicate it. |
You can dye the chrome RPM wheels
|
RIT offers a "dye remover" however I have never used it. Give it a shot and tell us how it works.

Wondering why RPM chrome wheels can be dyed black?
|
Maybe a different type of chrome, or maybe its just chrome effect paint, so the dye takes to it better.
|
Well when I dyed my chrome RPM wheels the red Rit dye took VERY WELL.
AND I brought the water to a boil before I "dunked" them. http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...9/DSCN3856.jpg http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...9/DSCN3858.jpg |
Try putting some vinegar on the boiling water. It will help in opening the pores of the plastic enabling the dye to seep into them.

RCShocker....those wheels look sweet, exactly the effect I was after. |
I think reason RPM wheels, chrome or otherwise, can be dyed in the nylon content. Here's their take on it and theres' a link to chome dyed wheels toward the bottom.

I would get new wheels if your going for show quality.
|
Jusy going for a different look not showing. I just don't like messing up $90 wheels when I thought I knew what I was doing.
