Mamba Max Capacitor protector?
 

I received my first Mamba max today which is going in a stampede. I have played with a lot of MMs but have never owned one myself. From experience I know that it isn't that hard to damage the capacitors in a crash and I know this thing is going to be crashed.

So I was thinking about making something to guard the caps. I have come up with this

I drew that up in probably less then 2 minutes so don't complain that my MM only has one fin and no wires :lol:.

I am going to make it out of some 3 or 4mm lexan that I have left over from my battery case. I think it should be plenty strong enough for the job.

I am open to other ideas though. Can any one think of anything that will be simpler or work better? Has anyone made some thing to protect the MM caps before?

It looks beautiful and should work great provided the lexan doesnt bubble at 180f, Ive just nevar had the need, mount it lower than the shock towers plus a bit incase you really fookin wreck and use a lid most times, never had an issue. Looks like a good solution to your problem though

I agree with jayjay, it really should be mounted where the ESC isn't subject to that kind of abuse. Even if that shield is made of metal, a crash could bend it and hit the caps anyway. A falling/moving vehicle (even a Pede) landing on the ESC has enough inertia to crush all but the sturdies guards. And if you made it strong/thick enough, that would be reducing the heat dissipation properties.

Use steel, and make it at least 4" thick. That way you can wad the pede up during a 120mph crash and the esc will be fine.

1/4" steel will most likely do for normal driving, but I like overbuilt stuff! (no comments on fat chicks please)

:lol: In the normal esc mounting location on the stampede I am fairly sure the caps stick up just past the shock tower and the body posts are too flexible to provide any protection. There also isn't really anywhere else to mount the esc in a stampede that is any more protected.

I showed my friend and he wants me to make him 2 for his MMs. He has now damaged the caps on both his escs.

He drives like a mad man and mine will be driven by an eight year old so we will know if it works soon enough.

metal would be a better option IMO. just deals with heat better. Also, you may want to put some side supports on the little thingy that comes over the caps. That way if a crash is big enough, you dont just crush the caps with that.

I haven't had time to make it yet. Hopefully tonight. Metal would be nice to add to the heat sink effect but I don't plan on having it touch the capacitors or anything that gets warm. I don't have any metal either but I do have a bench vice now so v2 may be made from metal.

I let him drive it for the first time on the weekend. It almost was a costly mistake. While I was not looking he decided to use the neighbours rock wall as a jump. It was impressive since the wall is a wall and looks nothing like a jump. He managed to launch the car off it and almost crash it into their front door. Car didn't break (good old stampede) but it did dislodge the mamba max. He was driving around and I was having a heart attack watching the MM dangling out the side.
