Neu 1515 & MMM Temp Poll
I know I've asked this before, but...
I put a TeknoNeu 1515/1Y and MMM and 4s in my E-Maxx that is now up to 11.5lbs. I ran hot so I got rid of the big Moabs and put some Terra-Izers on that are slightly smaller than stock. I've geared everywhere from 25mph to 50mph and everywhere in between. Changing gearing doesn't change temps. After only 5 minutes of running, I get: 160*F on the motor 120*F on the MMM 115*F on the lipos I know the faq says that 160*F is hot, so I am not happy with this. there is no binding in the drivetrain, all bearings are good. slipper is too tight if anything. mesh is right. i'm at a loss. Neu himself told me to just keep it under 200*F and not worry, but i keep reading how others are running the same setup with good temps. i finally gave up and put a fan on it, but i'd like to take it off if i could get some help. any thoughts? http://home.earthlink.net/~webhost/traxxas/fan/1.jpg http://home.earthlink.net/~webhost/traxxas/fan/2.jpg http://home.earthlink.net/~webhost/traxxas/fan/3.jpg the 24V fan (running off 4s) got me down to 140*F after 5 minutes and 160*F after 10 minutes. |
You should put a bigger fan, like 24" x 24", your's too small:lol::rofl:
|
that's a 60mm that is rated for ~20cfm at 24V.
i'll tell you what, i hooked it up to a variable power supply, and the last 1.2V make all the difference in the world. i'm not getting any where near 20cfm at 16.8V. |
a 40x40 would be more than adequate but 160* really isn't that hot

I run a Tekno Neu 1515/1.5d/f 4s in my converted slayer weight 9.75 lbe includes a 4s 6000 maxamps battery and I am geing in the 140 motor below 140 on the MMM and the battery never even gets warm. The Slayer does have mech. brakes though. The Slayer is the first rtr kit I have had.I noticed that the front and rear difs didnt spin as freely as any kits I have built.I put alloy diff cups and alloy diff cases. My point is check that the drivetrain is not binding in any way.Just a thought

I heard that the tekno neu motors run hotter than the regular neu motors.

The only differance I have noticed between the Neu and Tekno Neu is nothing.I have 1 of each both 1515/1.5d/f.My original Neu also is the older style with the stronger magnets.

your temps arnt "THAT" hot but compare to mine its a little off..
Ambient - 94 MM - 120 NEU 1515 1.5D - 130 4s MA Battery - 99 |
my xray 8xb has a 1515 and weighs less then your maxx and my motor runs anywhere from 135 to 175 it nevers gets over 175 even after 30 minutes so ya i was told by castle to keep the running temps under 180 and as long as it never got over 200 there wouldnt be any damage at all so loose the fan man your temps arent hurting anything
|
i guess the fact that the tekno is sealed makes it run a little warmer.
thing is, after 10 minutes with no fan, i get 180*F. i'd like to be able to run it for the full 20 minutes my batts can dish out. sometimes i think i just might be a little to heavy on the throttle. i'm always laying in to it so that the tires rip and spit up dirt and leaves and grass; non-stop for the full time i'm driving. but then again, i'm sure there are plenty of you that run way harder. what gets me is that changing the gearing has no effect on temps. |
Maybe you shoul dtry a different motor a Neu 2d ? I know you have a family and stuff and its expensive but ya know sometimes you get a lemon. Everything else has been tried, I can send you a 1.5d barely used and that goes 9 mph faster and gets to the temps you are at.

may i ask what gearing are you running?
|
Check the bearings on the motor, bad bearings can cause high temperatures and it seems like the bearings Neu uses isn´t that good, I´ve heard of several neu´s with bad bearings

Running a NEU 1515/1Y/F, with MMM. G3 chassis, v1 slipperential, UE diffs. Stock tires some of the time, otherwise Proline Beadlock with Big Joe tires. 11lbs with stock tires, 13 with the Big Joe's. Driving in the park on grass. Normal temp after about 20 minutes, ESC 110f, Motor 120F, batteries 85F. Batteries are 1-2s-8000 with 1-3s-8000 (5s total). Gearing is M1 spur 40, pinion 17. No additional fans for cooling.
