Gearing help
Im almost done collecting most of the parts for my BL savage. Going to order the BL stuffs along with the pinion from Mike as soon as the wanderer come in.
Ok here is my 1st question, Im not sure what gearing setup should I use. I know Serum has the Excel speed calculator but since Im not sure about the gear ratio of the UE 8 spyder diffs that I bought, it would be extremely great if you guys can help me on this. By the way, Im looking to get around 40mph and Im using LOSI LST tires (7"X4"). Secondly, I was planning to use 7XL but after reading a thread in this forum, I think I might go 8XL. I have 5s Lipo by the way. Im not really looking for speed, runtime is more important to me. Ive read that 8XL can give me more runtime. SO what do you guys think? Please shed some light.. |
How did you get the UE diffs in the savage? this is not possible?
(ue's are 13/43 and the savages are that too) you used the pinion from the savage? you use the 2 speed automatic or a 1speed? |
I bought the diffs from UE which come with the pinion. I dont think savage pinion can be used with the diffs due to the different gear cut. I tried to put the diffs in the savage, they fits in but the pinion needs to be shimmed, (alot ~2mm). Actually I havent assemble everything yet but some of the members at savage-central.com have tried it. Hope the diffs can hold up the power of the XL motor.
So serum should I go for 13/43? How about the motor, 7XL or 8XL? |
I too am a member on savage-central (buikpijn). The UE diffs are not for savage. they need about 2mm of shimms and there simple isnt enough meat left to get the cup tightened properly on the pinion. I also heard a person who used the savage 13 teeth with the UE ringgears, which is a nogo, because, you noticed it too, the gears of the UE's are helical cut, and the savage is a straight cut. in germany, you can buy a special modified savage gear, (ringgear) that fits the 8spiders. But it is not the inside of the diffs that are a concern, it are the pieces that plastic rubish that hold the entire diff.. a proper build savage diff, is simple as tough as the UE 8spiders. the material used in the 8spiders isnīt too good quality either. I know that twistedtoys did this savage-diff conversion, but i seriously doubt if that cup held on tight to his pinion.. He uses it on the fron of the truck. The rear gets a much bigger stress on it. Perhaps it is possible though, to make a 3/4th hole on it, so you have got some grip for the pin.. (as long it doesn't fall off, your okay right?! ;)
So far for the diffs; now, back to the gearing; automatic gears or fixed in one gear? what are you going to use. You did use my excelsheet? |
May also be worth considering that the LST tyres(claw) are balloontastic without plenty of tape.Good rough terrain tyre though.
|
So are the original HPI GT tires.. :D
|
Here we go again. The Fake Balloon Shot :L:
Still can understand how perfect this "snapshot" is. Gustav, those stock LST tires really have their place. For bashing/crawling around the house, I just love them. |
I remember seeing a video of a guy who put valves in the wheels and inflated some of those HPI tyres, took it to a skate park and it bounced pretty good on landings.Drove it on water too. When i went from the claw tyres to maxx sized(with tape) i geared up 6 teeth to get the same top speed with the LST tranny.
Yeah those LST tyres certainly have their uses.Crawlers love them on standard maxx width rims with no foams but they're also great for bashing rough stuff. You can float across some serious boulder fields with those things, especially with the LST shocks.Good for the mad/twin force i bet. |

Yea Serum I know that u are buikpijn at savage central. You are the one who recommended me this site when I asked you about BL conversion. ;) . I asked dyehard, one of the members there about the 8spyder before I purchased the diffs. He said that he has been using the diffs for a year now. Hmm im abit confused now. Should I just sell the diffs which is still new unassemble and get the savage diff?? or should I just use the 8spyder and see how it goes?? Back to gearing setup, yea i use ur excel calc but still not sure waht gearing setup to use. And Im going to stick with the 2 speed and a mechanical brake. So what gearing setup shoudl I use? And should I go for 7XL or 8XL? By the way, the LST tires are really nice. I saw few ppl use them on their Savage and they look sick! |
I also heard from Robin in the UE forum ,that those diffs didn't fit because of this. i wouldn't put my money on a screw that is only on for 3/4th..
Here, i found this, perhaps those are the ones we savage people are looking for.. :) But like i said, a proper build savage diff really is bulletproof.. |
Serum will the MGT pinion solve the 8 psyder prob?
Maybe I might just build the savage diffs and sell the unassemble UE diff And what do you think about the motor choice? 7XL or 8XL? |
i would go with the 8xl
|
yeah, the 8XL.. or the 9XL if you like the idea of 20 cells.. :)
Just get a pinion, or let me get one.. I will order from towers, or i will have Mike get me some.. (last option is prefered.. ) it would be great to know if this would work.. i ordered one, just to test it.. i hope it is long enough. |
Thanks serum. Im just about to sell the 8 spyder diffs. I'll be waiting for ur report. Please let me know how it goes.
So I'll order the 8XL. With 5s 3700Mah PQ, I hope it will me give me around 15-20 mins runtime. |
You might as well take the 9XL..
