some pricey questions...

Hey, me and brushlessboy16 are looking to redo our bodies, and we were gonna pool an order for paint and stuff. I'll be painting a hyper 7 body and he will be painting a MBX5T body(both 1/8 scale)my first question is, the paint comes in 3oz cans, and it says it can paint 2-3 1/24 scale bodies... will it cover a 1/8th scale? 2ndly, are there any coupons for towerhobbies.com or cheaper places to buy the paint?
and if anybody has some leftover paint were willing to take it as well...

the order

1 JConcepts Illuzion MBX5T Prospect HD Body Clear
1 Tamiya Spray Lacquer TS-52 Candy Lime Green 3 oz
1 Tamiya Spray Lacquer TS-42 Light Gun Metal 3 oz
2 Tamiya Spray Lacquer TS-40 Metallic Black 3 oz
1 Tamiya Spray Lacquer TS-49 Bright Red 3 0z

and our order comes to 69.93. this is why im really looking for a cheaper place or some coupons. anybody know of any?

I would look on ebay for a badger 250 - I just picked one up for $5...

Atomic do free shipping on $25 and have cheap prices.

i checked atomic, they barely have any paint, let alone the colors we want...
if only they had this stuff at killerhobbies...

checked ebay, and its only $4 discount

First do not buy tamiya TS paint for polycarbonate bodies, use PS. TS will not stick to polycarbonate/lexan bodies.

You generally need 2 cans to paint an 1/8 body. One of the color you want, and another white/silver to back it so that it does not look transparant.

that was the plan with the green/gun combo, but i did not know about the ts ps difference. thanks

Try your lhs! I can get paint for about $5-6 for the 3oz can. Shipping spray paint is where it gets pricey. I was looking to Order some from Tower but realized I could get it cheaper at my lhs. As Linc pointed out you will need to back the color you want with some white, silver, or black depending on the look you want. However the backer paint can be something cheap from walmart or the hardware store. You need special paint to stick to the lexan but basic spray paint will stick to that paint. I had some aluminum engine paint laying around and thats what I've used. The one big can goes along way as a backer.

You are welcome

so what your saying is i can use clear PS paint,or even some clear valspar plastic primer, and then use the TS paint? Id hate to just have that ps paint as an option, theres like 5 colors!

E-Revonut 11.16.2008 10:58 PM

I don't see a problem with using the clear PS then using whatever. My LHS is the one that told me I could use other paint as a backer and so far it has worked for me on the 4 bodies I have painted.

Must be 50 colors of PS, keep looking...

OK, I have this valspar plastic primer but idk if it will work on RC bodies... on the can it says "This product is a clear coating with excellent adhesion to common plastics such as PVC, polypropylene, and casting resin." U think polycarbonate will fall under that category of common plastics?

well, yeah. but I said 5 because it got me mad the the color i wanted was only TS

E-Revonut 11.16.2008 11:08 PM

RC bodies are generally lexan and I still wouldn't call polycarbonate a common plastic

Arct1k 11.16.2008 11:14 PM

Personally and especially if it is your first time I would look at fasKolor - If it goes wrong you just soak in a bucket of what for 2 days and the paint comes off.

i use lustrekote, its model aircraft paint comes in big 16oz cans (two cans did an 1/8 buggy, a slash, a j82, and a lazer zx5 body, and still have more left) its about 10 bucks a can but its gotta be the best paint ive used, its very flexible and doesnt chipout when your body starts to get trashed either. im sure you can find it at tower or amainhobbies.

fastkolor is a great product. Goes on smooth, dries quick, and doesn't chip. I also use Pactra rattle cans when I'm lazy. They work great and when paired up with some liquid masking, and a steady hand, the end product is almost as good as an airbrush job.
