p90x
hey guys ive been going to a gym for the past couple months and have definetly noticed a difference but when i start school (taking 20 credit hours..) i will be busy likea mofo...
i would like to be able to workout at home and this system seems to be REALLY good. of course i saw it on an infomercial and it grabbed my attention quick. what do you all think? has anyone tried it? http://www.extremebodyworkout.com/p9...ducts/p90x.php it may be a little more expensive than my gym (have to buy dumbells and what not. but i might give it a try for the next 3 months! edit. just thought that i would add that i have been doing the p90x ab workout and it DEFINETLY has improved my stomach. so i think that if the ab workout is good everything else should be right? |
Hey whatever motivates you to exercise consistently. Whats her name? You know the girl your trying to impress with your p90x abs?:mdr:

Tryin to make the old girl jealous? |
It is a decent workout. It works well because it is 5 hours a week too, not just 20 minutes a day three times a week. The important thing to consider is the intensity, if you follow the routines and keep a good pace you will burn a good bit of calories.
I have been going to a trainer that got the p90x set, and he uses a similar routine. But, it is based on MMA fighting too. Less stretching and shadowboxing, more hitting stuff. I can say that the high intensity training has put me almost back to my physical peak of 8 years ago. I just couldn't get it back by going to the gym and lifting weights, so martial arts seems to be the key for me. |
actually there really isnt any girl im trying to impress right now. more of myself.
but since im going away to college in 6 months i do wanna look good for all the ladies:wink: i mainly want to get bigger and more ripped. this will help that right? or is this to just get lean? (thats not what i need..) |
What are your stats now? weight, bodyfat, height, current fitness.
|
To get bigger you really should work with some weights. I'm not saying that you may not gain some muscle doing the p90 stuff, but if you really want to throw on some muscle weight try working with weights.
|
I have been able to get stronger working with weights, but not considerably bigger. I have actually seen more size increase by working high rep pushups, pullups, and bag work- heavy weights just never got me big no matter how much I ate.
Two ways to increase size- muscle fiber hypertrophy (strength- low rep high weight) and increased vascularity (blood flow- low weight high rep). I gain faster with vascularity, and increased blood flow can be used to increase strength and hypertrophy gains. It is a two way street, but everybody is different. |
What works for me is my own custom MD4x workout series.
I just sit on a chair in my office all day drinking an average of 4 Mountain Dews per day. I've got the nicest keg, err ... I mean, 6-pack you'd ever hope to see. :-) (Actually I am down to 1 Mountain Dew per day, but I bet I'd lose 20 lbs if I just cut the stuff out all together. Bleh.) |
I run. A lot.
'Nuff said... |
you could be cheap and torrent it (yes its there i checked)
(piracy is illegal though):intello: |
T-maxx, I've seen that same infomercial! I'll probably see it again tonight since I'm off from work tomorrow and will probably be up watching TV at 4:00 AM again...
Anyways I think you need a combination of cardio and strength training. The cardio, like the P90X, gets you lean so that you look ripped when your muscles become larger from the strength training. You can't really get both without doing both. Take it from the guy who hardly ever works out, but is 5'11 180 lbs. and looks like he weighs 160. |
I have it and can't stop saying good things about it. Those info commercial are no joke. If you stick with it you WILL see results. But you must understand its for fit/active people to step up to a next level. It's not a weight loss program. Whatever you choose good luck.

I will have to side with Chuck Norris on this one. Buy a total gym. I got mine for 100 bucks shipped, with very light use on it. I did cardio on a bicycle, 9 miles a day / 45mins with a heart rate over 160 bpm. The total gym is great for upper body and abs, plus you can do it fast enough to keep your heart rate up, thus extending your cardio workout. I even had a skeptical personal trainer give it a try. He bought one a few days latter.
I do agree with JRH, more reps with lighter weight seems to produce better "real world" results. I have a stocky build naturally, and can build muscle eaily, but not lose fat. More cardio worked for me, and I felt tons better. Plus if you have a lighter build, you will have to live in the gym to maintain any bulk. Better to be in good shape and be healthy, than be a meat head... As for the ladies, physical appearance is important, but if you stand there like a spare prick at a wedding you will not get very far. Work on your overall intelligence (read a dictionary, and watch the discovery channel, and scan a newspaper) and personal hygiene. Chicks like guys who dress well, so investing some money in some quasi designer clothes is not a bad idea. Don't stray too far from your personal style, you still want to look comfortable. My best tip for college life is to stay away from drugs (pills too) and work on your alcohol tolerance. The drinkers are a better crowd to hang with than the druggies, plus a few drinks never hurt anyones chance of making a "love connection" (drinks go in the girl, not you) Make a bunch of friends, and have a good time, maybe try to get a degree... |
