Trying to decide witch motor for my Rustler

I will run it on 2 cell lipo & 8 cell NIMH

1. Feigao 380L (6L-4817kv or 8L-3613kv)
or
2. Traxxas Velenion 3500 Brushless Motor (3500kv)

Thanks

Get a medusa 36-50-4800.

I can get a good deal @ my LHS on the Feigao or Velenion

I run a velineon in a rustler, 3500 kv (duh) on 3s and its fast, faster than it needs to be. On 2s its cool but leaves you wanting more. I run a 4800 kv (pretty sure) losi motor in a speet T on 3s, and that truck actually catches air. 4800 kv on 3s is turd smiling fun on 2s is sweet too and controllable. I vote the feigao 6l

Nice sled in yer avatar, as for motor, they ( ^^^^) know what there talking about, listen to them.

I've used the 380c 6L and 4800 Medusa, and I prefer the Feigao in the Rustler still. Other then the Medusa running cooler and being cheap, I just don't see what the big deal is about.

lol, are you serious? Those are pretty good reasons to me. Running the same power levels yet cooler means higher efficiency, which means more of your battery power is getting to the ground instead of being dissipated into the air. And the cheap part, well, that's a good thing too.

Thanks for the advice
Sled is a 2003 Pro X with rail exten to 136 & a RMK 700 motor.

Ya I'm serious.

I've used both motors in the Rustler and for the life of me could not tell a difference in power. I'm not trying to be snob, but I'm just posting what I've experienced. I agree that less heat equals greater efficiency, but in the Rustler the cheaper 2 poler wins over the 4 pole medusa in my book.

Just out of interest snellemin what timing settings have you run and have you tried gearing the motor for a higher top speed as from what i have read that tends to get the best out of 4 pole motors.

Also i would be interested in what controllers you have tried the Medusa motor on.

snellemin 12.12.2008 04:36 PM

Biggest gearing I used was 58/25 mod .8. Lutach 200A speed controller set to 16khz, medium timing. I didn't bother with the mamba max yet. I did run the motor up to 6s1p A123 though and snapped a dogbone.
The feigao just spools up quicker then the medusa does.

chilledoutuk 12.12.2008 05:31 PM

have you considered there 28mm motors with an adapter plate as technically they would then have the same small diameter rotor and have a faster spoolup with battery's that have limited current output like running 1s a123.

snellemin 12.12.2008 06:38 PM

I'm not planning to buy any more medusa motors for 1/10 scale vehicles.

The most power hungry motor I have used so far in the Rustler are the LRP 3.5 and the Lutach Special 2.5T. The 3.5T was pulling 122.11Amps@6.21V continuous with a 3s1p A123 pack. The 2.5T was pulling 145A@7V continuous with 3s2p A123 pack. I see no need to go with lipo's yet.

Other fun motors in the rustler were, 8L c40 hacker, 5300+4200 basic lehner, 8T 540 Feigao motor, 7T nemesis/feigao motor, 3100xl lehner, 7T+8T 380c feigao, 9T+12T c40 hacker. When I went overboard with voltage w/the Rustler the B50 11L Hacker was hella fun. All ran with the A123's.
