I have gotten a popup once before. Cleaned, defragged my computer and it never happened again.

takedown- I like the new avatar

My pc is infected. Anyone know of any free/cheap anti-virus software? Piracy laws don't apply to quadriplegics so I'll take anything.

I have a few free programs that work brilliantly for me:

C Cleaner (crap cleaner)
MalwareBytes anti-malware

And download the microsoft Defender software if you havent already- great tools.

Adjusting your browser settings a bit will also help- set security to 'medium-high' and privacy to 'medium high' too.

Definitely sounds like you have some adware/spyware on your PC. Could have gotten there via a Trojan.

AVG antivirus has a free version of anti-virus software: http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Vir...=dl&tag=button

Cnet.com has about every free piece of software available....

Thanks guys! In 6 yrs. of computer ownership I haven't once used an av program. I figure it is the ISP's responsibility to keep my pc safe, even though I know that's not the case. Time to bite the bullet.

You can also try (and I recommend) Ad-Aware (free edition) and Spybot Search & Destroy (also free). Of course there are upgraded versions you can buy but the free ones work fine.

Oooh, bad policy! How does the ISP know what you are downloading is something you wanted or not? At the very least, every PC should be running an AV program, a firewall (Windows firewall works, but is lame), and some type of spyware/adware remover.

I use AVAST and its free

I guess I knew that but was in denial. Sometimes I live by the idiot theory. You see, idiots don't know to run AV programs, check their oil, look both ways before crossing etc. etc., and yet they continue to live and breathe and don't have problems. I think the problems only come when you're smart enough to recognize them, some kinda cruel twist of fate.....

I use Kaspersky..
A key is about 7 bucks.
When you... nvm, but you need it.

Avast isn't too great about catching things straight up. Maybe when you scan.
AVG scan's are perfect, but they again, aren't the best catching it in real-time.
Kaspersky has those annoying security alert things, where you allow, but once you click save, it works wonders.
