losi 8ight with losi esc and 1700kw

trying to get this system to start out smoother. i can get bad cogging if i take off slow. ( guess im spoiled with my neu and mmm)

im on very low timing and low start power. running 5s.

BL_RV0 01.25.2009 02:46 PM

Raise timing and start power a little and see if your cogging lessens. If not, you probably can assume that there is some cogging with little throttle.

auto2 01.25.2009 02:51 PM

when i got it (used) it was on high start power and normal timing. i lowered it and cogging didnt change. anothe guy at the track has same complaint with his.

im curious if all these systems do this ?

Takedown 01.25.2009 05:52 PM

All brushless systems cogg. Some are noticable and some are not.

Try lowering gearing too, but that will obviously lower your top speed as well. The idea here is to get more motor revs per mph so the ESC has an easier time getting rotor position.

Might also try a Tekno clutch adaptor. That will get the motor rpms up to a decent value before engaging the drive line and should cure the cogging. Not sure what kind of really low speed startups you are looking for though.

BL_RV0 01.25.2009 06:30 PM

Yeah, the systems probably just do that.

Check your esc to motor connectors. If you can direct solder them. I have had issues with bullet connectors arcing and causing what you describe.

High start power ususally helps with slow speed cogging. More info on your setup would be helpful, gearing, battery etc. And a picture may help too..

its just a stock losi 8ight E

running a 13 tooth -pinion stock spur

battery is 5s 3700 enerland

the track is really a small 1/10 scale indoor track. on a 180 turn sometimes if i slide the car and it stops at the apex it will cog trying to start out.

my 808 with mmm and 1512/1.5y is smooth as silk in the same turn

Seems to me that the startup sequence of the Losi esc just isnt as refined as that of the MMM, i dont think there is a way around it without a firmware update from losi..

auto2 01.25.2009 09:07 PM

well that was what i was thinking too. Which just shows how good the MMM really is.

so to make the best of it how should i set it up? start power? etc

marzac2 01.25.2009 09:18 PM

The firmware update should help with some of the cogging.

Has it been updated to the latest?

Also as Brian noted, a clutch will completely eliminate ANY cogging. And with a loose or no spring on the clutch shoes, it will almost engage like direct drive.

update:

i updated the firmware and the cogging is almost all but gone. yea! unfortunatlly most of the settings are gone too. like initial acceleration is now set on high with no adjustments. also motor timing is either normal or high.
also in reverse when you let off it puts the brakes on.

I also just updated the firmware to the latest version F.010120, but when reverse, once let off .... it puts the brakes on.... very bad on the transmission.......as it comes in a very sudden manner....

I want to change it back to the original F.010115 version, how can I do that....as there is no such version in their web, neither in the CD

Did you guys recalibrate your radios to the esc after the update? Zero all of your settings on the throttle channel, recalibrate and see if that helps...
