E-Revo 95% finished. Current pics and controller mounting questions!
Alright my buddy and I finally got down to business and ordered the rest of the stuff we need, and spent a few hours making the battery trays.

Note, mine are not quite finished as they are not plasti-dipped yet, nor have I decided where to mount the brace (hence the reason there is just a peice of cut aluminum resting atop the trays). http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...4_153_full.jpg These are my buddies trays that have already been dipped, and his tray-brace that got dipped as well. http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...4_154_full.jpg This is the way I was Wanting to mount everything. Having the rx batt under one of the trays on the chassis (only running rx batt till I get home from the trip and order a motor clamp and Ubec). Mounting the receiver against the motor plate (Plan to rig up a box somehow to mount against the plate, so the receiver is not directly against the plate). and then have the controller mounted on top of the tray-brace. The problem is with this mounting setup ^^ The controller wires will not reach the back of the motor :( I really hate to add any length to those wires, as I know the longer the wires get, the more inefficiency (plus it would look hacked with some black/red wire added onto the ends of the nice wire already on the controller!) So... I thought maybe this mounting setup might work?? http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...4_156_full.jpg This puts the RX batt across the top of the trays on the tray-brace, and then the controller would get tucked under the tray. (either mounted against the tray, or against the chassis) I like this setup as it protects the controller, and then the wires will reach to the motor. The only things that concern me with this setup, are A: Heat build up. I plan to run bodies all the time, so airflow will already be cut down, thus not being much of an issue? and B: Can the heatsink short out the controller if it touches bare metal? I will have my trays plasti-dipped as soon as I figure out the final layout, but was worried with it being that close to the chassis. For those who have dealt with similar setups, does the 9920 get warm in a setup like this? (9920/8xl geared relatively conservatively on 14 3800's/ 14 3300's) If I ran this setup ^^ I do have two small 3/4 inch fans I could mount to the top of the controller without much problem, but would prefer not to if avoidable, mostly because of the fact this truck will be run primarliy on the beach in florida for the next two weeks. I apologize for the crappy picture quality. I have a new 7.2 mp sd550 camera coming in about 3 days, so wont have to deal with this ancient 1.3 mp camera anymore! Any input is greatly appreciated! |

The pics aren't that bad, roost. I would not run the rx pack on the ESC! When you can spare the cash, get an UBEC anyway. Nice batter collection, good motor/ESC choice, and a very cool truck. i'm sure you will have lots of fun! DAF |
I wasnt actually planning on running an rx batt, just using the on board bec (is it 4.8v or 6.0 volts?) But, after doing some reading on here I was reading its better to run either a ubec or rx pack than run the bec from the controller? UBEC isnt an option for this trip (plan to get one when I return home, but will be doing quite a few runs with this on our trip).
If I can get away with just using the built in bec I will definitely do that (less weight on the truck, one less thing to charge!) Thanks for the comments, you were my inspiration! |

I myself have not much experience with the BEC on the warriors, but I was told it works fine on 14 cells. Must be nice to have an RC buddy close by. How old are you guys if I may ask? Have a nice time on the beach! And beware of the water! |
I am 19 as is my buddy. There really are not all that many people my age (or people I want to associate with) that are into rc really close to me (meet nice people at the tracks that are 45-60 mins away though). My buddy is going to school to be an engineer, so its nice to not only have an rc buddy, but one that over-analyzes the heck out of EVERYTHING! A lot nicer than the one buddy I used to have who thought zip ties and CA glue were the key to fixing problems. (that buddy is no longer into rc, for obvious reasons, just wanted to run the trucks, not wrench)
I ran my BL rustler on the beach last year, and we had a blast! We made a different sand-track each day. Hopefully everything holds together on these revos so we can enjoy them through the entire trip. I will be sure to post our pictures once we return. |
If you can, take some spare maxx shafts and jokes on the trip. Other than that, you should be safe.
Is your tranny locked in 2nd? Metal idler installed? Thank you for the info! |
I have a CVD to the rear (havnt run it yet, hopefully it runs true and smooth) and then a maxx slider to the front. My buddy has sliders going to both the front and rear. We are hitting up the hobby shop tomorrow to pick up a few last things (antenna mounts, sliders, spurs etc) so hopefully its all we need. I do have the UE idlers installed. My buddy has the stock idlers, but is running the HV, so hopefully he is ok.
We actually have it setup right now with the servo for shifting. I really like being able to switch between first and second. I love doing a bit of slower paced crawling, so having first gear available lets me do that, while still having good top speed. I will just have to make sure not to be on power while shifting, or the shifting cogs might be toast. |
if you want to mount the controller on the tie bar just reverse the tranny and the motor if it goes backwards. that simple.

Too bad its not that simple :( We run the servo in the extra slot for the 2 speed, and if I flipped it, would have to find a new place to mount a servo (not easy to do on the revo chassis).
I think I am just going to stick the controller under the tray and hope it dosnt get too toasty. |
not really on moving the servo. You have to make a new linkage to run to the back to the truck.

Yea, but it takes a little extra work, and it might cause problems, such as binding with one of the compents near the tranny, such as unneeded wires tangling up with the shifting servos new linkage, or maybe not, but its extra work for sure.

Hey..a..I guess a brushless revo might be better than a B.maxx. You know..faster, lighter, better suspension,etc....may be another time I'll get myself a B.revo..

Yes theoretically its possible to flip the tranny, but not only does that create the issue of making a longer shift rod and possible interference with items on the truck, but it puts the weight further to the rear. Right now the batts are already pretty far back, and would like to keep it as close to neutral as possible.
I think I am just going to mount it behind a battery tray with two small fans on the top, hopefully that does the trick. |
