Question for the motor experts - winding?

Ok, so I have a dead plett maximum. It has shorted windings. I am wondering if I can removed the windings (I can get em out) and re-wind the motor...

Any info on what to use, and any techniques or thread, pics or whatever will be greatly appreciated.

kostaktinos_mt 02.12.2009 05:25 PM

nope... special chemicals will be needed to disolve the epoxy resin which currently keeps the windings in place. slightly different chemicals may disolve the enamel coating of the windings and render them useless. in this case, since the windings are already shorted somewhere [deep threaded screws i believe??], this might not be a problem.

winding it from the start to be as good as it came from the factory, will be very difficult. provided that the windings are [material-wise] as high quality as they should, it will be hard to fit them and align the iron laminations perfectly without [at least] the appropriate equipment. usually, the windings are hand-wound [or machine-wound] on an external rack that has been purpose-built for that job. then it is bath-ed with epoxy and when the epoxy cures it is fitted into the motor can [trimming the epoxy resin can be a pain in the neck however].

best case scenario is to ship it back to plettenberg. they will get it fixed but i suppose you will be charged some $...

And at that point, it might be more cost-effective to simply get a new motor...

What pole/mag combination is it?

kostaktinos_mt 02.12.2009 05:28 PM

4/12 configuration...

I would also say that it is nearly impossible to rewind the motor proberly by hand at home.

If you don't find any other solution, spend 10$ and ship it to me, i'll send it to Plettenberg directly from Germany. They care much more about their German customers. They check it really fast and tell you how expensive a repair would be.

Hey Linc,

Can you post a couple of pictures for me? One of each end?

I have rewound some outrunner motors. JohnRob and I were corresponding back and forth about this at one time.

I wonder what the original configuration was? probably DLRK wound with a Delta termination. What I'm really wondering is what strand count and gauge wires were used and also how many turns?

A custom wound Pletty would give you the option to change kv some and even improve on the factory specs if done right.

More info please. :yes::oops:

Ummm Ummm I mean........what do you want for it? LOL

lincpimp 02.12.2009 07:44 PM

Funny, I will get some pics of it.

Bl-Power, I appreciate the offer. depending on the outcome of this I may take you up on it.

From what I can gather the internals of the plett are very similar to a neu, and from what I can recall, that design require the windings to be done by hand. Now I am sure that they must have some form of "assistance" when winding the motor. I will get back in a few with pics... Fixing lipos seems to take all of my time nowadays!

You've got mail.

It may be wave wound. If anything it may be a distributed winding, but it wouldn't be a derivative of LRK.

There are some pretty good pictures of a couple Plettys in this thread.

http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/show...t=maxx+insides

This appears to be a 1 turn winding. I can't make out the termination since I can't see the other end of the motor. Judging by the way it comes together, it appears to be some sort of Delta.

If I'm correct on the kv of the pletty max with fan, it's 3000kv?

This confirms that it must be a 1 turn to get that high of a kv with the large 4 pole stator.

Definately hand wound. As each set of strands is inserted through the opening, they took the time to slip protective sleeves onto each set of wires.

Machines don't do that.

The configuration should be easy to duplicate, but I wonder what the possibilities are? I have to get ready for work now, but I'll research this tonight.

One possibility. Lower the kv and use a single larger strand of high temperature wire for maybe 2 turns. 2200kv being the target maybe?

Single strand, single turn with a wye termination maybe?

Hmmm...........what is the diameter and length of the stator magnets?

Hey John,

Can you point me at some 4 pole winding patterns for a 12 pole stator field?

i believe it`s 2 turn, but i could be mistaken...

ABCABC is the only concentrated wind I know of for 4 pole/6 tooth. I don't think a 4/12 motor is a good combination for typical distributed winding.

This may help for the overlapped winding (wave type)
