Hobbywing 80+medusa 36-50-3300
Anyone think this combo on 3s would work good in the crt.5,and will it fit? looks kinda big for an 80 amp esc,.But I ordered the motor and esc to replace the velineon system in my .5 .Any thoughts on this combo for gearing?Thanks.

It's bigger than the MMM, so placement might well be an issue. Otherwise, it should work quite well.

The motor will fit without a problem, don't know the size of the esc though. As far as gearing goes use BrianG's calculator. It will pull whatever gearing you had with the vxl and a lot more! Drop a tooth on the pinion and speeds will be about the same as the vxl but much cooler temps.

I'm running 16/46 with the 36-50-3300 on 3s. Temps are never a problem and it has loads of torque. BrianG's speed calc has me at around 50mph, but real world is around 38-40mph.

If your speed is off from the calc that much I'm guessing you either entered something wrong or your batteries can't handle the current

Got the medusa 36-50 and hobbywing esc installed and took it for a some quick runs,the esc is a pain to program to me,and am waiting for the programming cards to arrive from rcm,but I got it programmed enough to run it on pavement and it was a tick slower on 14 tooth pinion,the same setup as the velineon combo I had before.18 tooth will not fit as it touches the motor mount screws.The fan on it runs constantly and am not sure I like this esc yet,but the hot weather is almost here and maybe this is a good thing.Massive footprint for sure but stayed cool and smooth for the first speed runs,withe the medusa getting about 130 with no body fitted.

I've actually found the EZRun ESCs pretty easy to program w/o the program card, tho I have that too, which does make it much easier. The large size of the ESC should help it with thermal management as when it comes to power electronics, there's no substitution for size and mass to disperse and dissipate heat.

I have 3 mamba max's ,which are much smaller and more powerful than the hobby wing esc( I know hey make a 150).Never thermal,and are much easier to program,right out of the box, because of superior electronics and software The problem with the hobbywing is not so much the hardware,but the instructions leave much to be desired,and they are HUGH in size for any 8th esc.I ran the current setup in the dirt today and was very happy with it after setting down and playing with the settings for a while, A great bargin,none the less.That being said,I'm going to go with another mmm esc because I consider this hobbywing just too big for a crt.5 , even though it fits(barely) as you can see by the pics. Gonna use the hobbywing in my mutilator truggy project.

Yeah, the hobbywing is a PITA to program, especially when the manual isn't clear on how to move between programming steps. I had a heck of a time getting past option 1 until I just played around and eventually figured it out.

Grey - can you post a pic of the Hobbywing next to the MMM to get an idea of size difference? I can't comment on the quality of electronic components. Having been in the electronics component industry, virtually all are made in china by a fairly small amount of fabs. If you consider the die in the components, there are fewer still for fabs. The 2 brands may share more in common in terms of electronic components used than you think. As for software and the amount of thought put into ease of use/programming, the CCs definitely have the edge. Yeah, the Hobbywing manuals leave much to be desired. I just play around with them until I figure it out. Luckily though, with the program card, it's easy to program. I'm glad I got that with it. The CCs also has the advantage of additional programming features with the CastleLink with setting throttle curves and the like, but I've never found myself changing those and only change the "basic" settings, which are for the most part the same as the Hobbywing settings. For the money, I've been happy with my Hobbywing ESCs. I just picked up a 150A to try in my TTR ST-1 truggy. I'm thinking about picking up another 1/8 truggy to convert to BL too, and may pick up an EZRun 80A ESC and motor combo since they're relatively so inexpensive (the complete 80A combo for about the price of a new MM ESC). I'll see how the 150A does in my ST-1. It will be replacing a MM (which might be for sale if I like the EZRun more). |

I can say you are correct about the parts being virtually the same.It's the quality control standards and customer service that I have come to appreciate from castle that keeps me comming back.
