Which truggy for bashing?
 

Hello everyone, I've been lurking here for a while now and I really love all the information on this forum.

I've been bashing my MGT for a while now (as a nitro vehicle) and decided that I'm going to sell a bunch of stuff and finally build something big and brushless. I've had a bunch of 1/18 brushless vehicles that I love and I'm just tired of dealing with nitro.

From the research I've done so far it looks like truggys make for great BL conversions mostly due to the center diff layout that allows for a pretty straightforward conversion. There's nowhere that I know of to race around where I live so I've always just been a basher so bashing will be the only purpose of the vehicle I intend to build.

Two vehicles have caught my interest so far: The Losi Muggy and the Ofna CRT. I haven't found as much info on the CRT as I'd like so far but it looks promising.

Muggy
Pros:
-strong diffs
-tons of parts available since most come from the LST series vehicles, RPM arms etc.
-big size and suspension would be good for jumps

Cons:
-I owned a mini-lst so I kinda hate Losi
-Really heavy. Which hurts handling and also means I'm going to put more stress on my electronics.
-I've heard the chassis is weak. So I'd need the hard chassis upgrade.

CRT
Pros:
-lighter than the Muggy
-I hear it's bomb proof
Cons:
-?

TLDR: Basically I'm looking for a 1/8 size basher. I'm not set on these two choices. In fact, I seem to change my mind daily so I'm really open to suggestion here.

Mbxt-5 for a truggy I own a mbx-5 and it is bombproof. Or you could get a Savage, Revo 3.3 converted to BL. The revo would require some upgrades to to diffs to make it bomb proof.

Thanks for the suggestions, I like the look of that MBX5T. I'm looking to buy a roller used on e-bay to save money and there seems to be a decent amount of MBXs and CRTs which is good news for me.

I'm going to spend a little more time researching the MBX.

Yea, I couldn't help but notice you were here on Cape. I live in Bourne and work in Hyannis. I usually bash around Sandwich and in Hyannis 'after work' :lol:

Hyper ST is a tough truck too...

I've got a CRT and it has survived some pretty big crashes without issue. If you're looking to do the vehicle on a smallish budget, a used CRT is relatively easy to pick up these days for under $200. Overall, I'm very happy with mine and it's use thus far has been nothing but a basher.

My recommendations
Hobao Hyper ST Pro (aslo sold as Ofna)
Hong Nor X2-CRT (also sold as Ofna and Jammin)
Xray XT8
Team Losi 8T

Those were, where i chosed mine Hyper ST Pro, just because it has cheap spareparts and dealer has stock in my city.
Those are best truggys out there, just choose one where you can find spareparts nearby. HPI and HB might be good choises also...

The LHS around here only carries Traxxas and a small selection of Losi. So I'll be using e-bay as my primary parts source probably when the time comes.

I'm also tempted to try the new Hobby Wing EZRUN 150A. I have the Hobby Wing 35A controller and 60A controller and they've been great.

I'd probably go for a Xray 808 or wait and get one of the new HB D8 truggies.

I really like the look of the XRAY products but cheap parts for them seem really scarce so I'd probably avoid them.

I have a Hot Bodies touring car and I'm happy with the construction. I'm looking for something used and cheap though to start with.

Used and Cheap - Just pick up and LSP Pro...

I vote for the H St as well. Very tough truck, cheap and plentiful parts, awesome performance. Turns on a dime. Plus it comes as a kit, so you get to build the whole thing yourself.

I've seen the kits run ~$350. I bought a big bag of new spare parts like arms, buckles etc off ebay for ~$35, and have yet to need any of them after a year. Will keep up w/ any trug on the track as well. Driver skill will count more than the differences in the trucks for most skill levels. You can get a used trug, but sometimes they are pretty well beaten, and may need quite a few spares and bearings to get back to spec.

Only mod needed is Kyosho inferno diff gaskets to stop leaky diffs due to a lame o-ring design. Otherwise best deal in truggies.

I really like the prices I'm seeing on the Hyper ST and there seems to be tons of parts available as well. I guess that means it's time to start researching builds.

I guess now it's time to sell off the MGT and related stuff... and start planning the build itself.

I'm going to need:
-wheels/tires: It's a basher so I'm leaning toward Maximizers and Badlands
-battery: Flightmax 5s 5000mah 25 probably
-motor: I'm thinking either Medusa or Castle/neu
-ESC: MMMv3 Sounds like the crowd favorite but I've been really happy with the EZRUN controllers that I already own... this is going to be a hard decision for me.
-Steering servo: No idea yet.
-Some custom mounts and whatnot; motor mount, esc mount, battery tray etc.

I'm also not sure which KV motor I should run and with what gearing. I'm trying to work that out now...

Edit: BTW Finn, I love that CRT.5. It looks like a blast.
