Best Intake?
 

Looking for a nice intake setup for my new 1989 saab 900s. Any ideas on what would give me the most boost in low end power for the money? Im thinking an AEM short ram intake would be my best bet. I would like to spend under $200.

i'm not familiar with saab aftermarket upgrades, but i just picked up a JWT Popcharger for my Z. they claim 6.5+ hp increase to the rear wheels, and i paid $110 shipped.

With a short ram there's not really a reason to spend much more than $120, as long as a company makes a model with the appropriate bungs already welded on.

WOW, that is junk dude... Don't waste your money. I am not familiar with a saab either, but you will not get much out of an intake save for more noise. Spend the money on synthetic fluids. You can pick up 5-10hp using synthetic oils in the engine, tranny, and diff... Plus your car will last longer. Not sure if K&N make a drop in filter for that saab, but something like that will be your best bet. Do full maintanence on your car with that money, check all of the bearings, brakes, and flush the brake fluid. I guarantee that you will pick up more power doing a complete service (fuel filer too) than you will with a piece of pipe and a crappy air filer.

Aem and the like are the worst made car porducts I have found. No specific car design, and half the time the bolts are wrong and the mounts do not line up... Junk... I have seen more zipties keeping those things on than I care to remember...

Well, you must have been listening to the uninformed... I have done alot of import performance stuff, mostly turbos and the like. Aem are just out to sell stuff to the masses. I have never really seen a performance increase with any of their stuff, just shiny and makes noise... Go the synthetic fluid route, it will make more power that way.

Do you think a nice cold air intake system or short ram setup would be worth it if I bought it from the right company? Im also going for a complete flowmaster exaust setup.

A cold air setup is usually a good upgrade. Not sure if it will do much though... As for flowmasters, might want to try a turbo style muffler, they sound better on non-v8 engines, at least to me.

But they have a limited exaust judging by how small the muffler intake and tip are. Will that limit power? What exactly is the benefit to having a turbo style over a regular cherry bomb can power wise? Im looking at 2in exaust tubing "custom welded" if I cannot find an exuast setup for the 900s or if the price for one is to high.

A 2-2.5" diameter should do fo that vehicle... It is not pushing 600bhp...

have you thought about test/racing pipes, or high flow cats? cheaper than a full exhaust system, makes a louder exhaust note (if that's what you're looking for), and reduces exhaust back pressure... a lot.

sorry...you'll have to check on different companies that make exhaust add ons for your car...they're all different. mine won't work for yours...although this is what i have for mine (and make sure if you do find them, that you go with a resonated chamber to remove the 'rasp'...unless this is just a Z thing). keep in mind, though, that removing the catalytic converters isn't legal. heh. :whistle:

check out a good forum for saabs. i belong to an incredible Z forum, and there are tons of marketplace vendors, DIY sections, and info for just about anything that can be done to a Z.
