medusa 2000kv 60mm motor
hi guys. i am a little disappointed with my medusa motor. the temperatures are great it is alot cooler than my 9xl but the speed isn't really that great if i am honest. compared to the 9xl it seems about 5 mph slower.
i have geared it up to 16/stock losi spur but it still doesn't have much top end? i came into a bit of money so thought i would spend it on a new motor but did i get too lower kv motor on a 14.8v lipo in my 8b? would it be better to run it on 5s instead of 4? the mamba max esc stays super cool (i have a brushless fan on it and a BEC but don't know what caps/ how to wire them) so would it be ok to run on 5s? thanks richard |
Put a larger pinion on it. Go up a few teeth, you probably do not have it loaded enough to get it making full power. I have the 1600kv motor in a hyper8 and on 6s with gearing for 50mph it runs cool with tons of power. I do need to wire up some better lipos, the 2170 25c packs i have are a bit taxed!
Keep in mind that a 2000kv motor on 4s is only going to get to 30k rpm or so. 5s would definitely wake it up, but I am not sure if i would run the MM on 5s. Some have success other do not. Plus pinions are cheaper than lipos. What are the specs on your lipo, mfg, etc? |
If you aren't satisfied with the speed and your MM is cool, then you definitely have room to gear up. Those 60mm Medusas can handle a lot more than a buggy... My X1-CRT truggy runs a 60mm 1600kv on 5s geared for ~45mph and runs great.

Just in case, set your throttle endpoints to maximum and then recalibrate your speed control.

I aggree with all these replies
The Medusa motor, being a 4 pole motor will outpull your old motor by lots, and run cooler doing it. If you want to match your old top speed, go with a 18 tooth pinion. If you want a higher top speed, go with a 20 tooth pinion. I'm sure the Medusa would have no problem tossing it around with this gearing. As long as you're still close to the stock vehicle weight. Nice setup btw. |
2000 kv in a losi 8 with a 16t pinion give you like 42 mph, you shouldnt need more?
|
thanks for the replies guys :yipi:
are there any spurs i can buy that will increase top speed? i have 12-16 teeth pinions and don't really want to buy more but instead go down a few teeth on the spur? i was thinking of getting a plastic spur anyway |

what would the 2000kv motor be like on 6s? i put it into the speed calculator and a 14T pinion will give me 53.53 mph but the RPM's will be 44400 is that a little high? will the motor get a bit hot? i will only be bashing and so i am not too worried about the extra weight of the lipos

Anything over about 40,000 RPM is a bit much for general purpose (non-high speed runs). 5s is about the maximum recommended for a motor of 2000 kv, but typically 4s will be plenty.

I ran my 60mm medusa in a mbx5 buggy on 5s geared 46-14 and it was a bit warm afterwards. The speed was AWESOME fast at the soccer field on short grass.Went back down to 4s and am very happy with this motor and mmm esc.Runs nice and cool and has way more than enough power for a motor of this size,really,..it's amazing for the bucks spent!

Yes,the 2000kv afterburner.

i run a 36 60 2000 in my buggy that has the same diff ratio as the losi. i run a 14/44 combo and my buggy really goes well as far as i am concerned.
i only race it so controllable power is what i am after but i would never see the need to go higher than a 15 tooth pinion. by the way when i had my novak 6.5 in my buggy i clocked it at 38 with my radar gun and i know it is a little faster now even with the 14 tooth pinion. |
