Making a 5 speed savage.

Hi,
has anyone ever tried making a 5 speed savage?
Put two 3speed trannys end to end. Get rid of the plastic box and make some 5mm aluminium cases?
let the first tranny get upto 3rd gear first then let the second one get to 3rd gear.

1st gear=2.36x2.36=5.5
2nd gear=2.03x2.36=4.79
3rd gear=1.53x2.36=3.61
4th gear=1.53x2.03=3.10
5th gear=1.53x1.53=2.34

using a MMM on 6s/ running CEN diffs/ baja 5b wheels and 47/20ish gearing 70mph should be fairly easy to achieve.

I have never herd of anyone trying to make more than a 3 speed tranny. Fist of all it would have to be huge and second of all it would weigh a ton. It would be pretty cool though, going from first to second sounds awesome but going from first to second to third to fourth to fifth would be sweet!

The only way you could really make one would to make an aluminum case. I don't know what gears you would use though. Just my thoughts.

I wanna see pics when you're done.

Would it be worth it though with an electric motor? Maybe with a nitro. I think you might have issues setting the shift points on the second tranny though.

I think a 2 speed with a monster second gear would work best. With 5 gears it would be shifting constantly. With a solid first gear to get you to about 35 and then a second gear to blast you to 50 would probably be what I invision as the best. I don't know if that would work though...

I wasn't planning to build this myself but i'll give it a go :)

Got my GCSE"s in two months but then i have three months on holiday :) :) :)
I've already got 1 3speed, just need another one.

this is what i intend to do with my converted revo. standard ratio 2 speed with 22/38 gearing on 4s

1st gear gets me to 40 and then 2nd pushes to 55.

i think this would also work better than a 5 speed. but the 5 speed would be sick in a custom 6x6 scale truck.

All the pre-made transmissions are made for the nitro engine's small power band. An electric motor has a HUGE power band so a large gearing change can be made.

Yeah, I too think it would be heavy and not worth the effort for what you get out of it. Maybe if you wanted to use an S size motor, you'd need all those gears to pull the weight AND have good top speed.

Like most auto-shifting tranny's, first gear is on a OWB and second is on a centrifugal clutch. I would think simply adding more centr. clutches for each gear thereafter would do the trick.
