CVDS for Flux?? Which ones??

I was looking at the factory hpi cvds are these any good and they will work with the flux right?

I don't think you'll find any CVD's as beefy as the stock dogbones. Any reason why you don't like the dogbones?

Try to find some hardened universals. CVD's arent reliable with heavy torque.

No reason I just broke my a arm and the dogbone flew out and could not find it, i was just looking for an excuse to get cvds but if there not strong enough I will stick with dogbones

You should be able to find some of the dogbones pretty cheap on eBay. There are a lot of folks parting them out right now. I won an auction last night for $7.05 for all 4 corner dogbones and the 2 center dogbones.

There's a pic somewhere in these Savage forums of a sheared universal... I haven't broken one of the Savage CVDs (made by HPI) from too much torque. It only broke because of a hard crash.

Personally I would recommend the HPI CVDs, but my Savage has a center diff which takes a lot of stress off the drivetrain. Thus I have no idea how well they would hold up to the Flux.

You will have to get the smaller diff cups to use the HPI cvds. The flux has the upgraded dogbone like on the XL. I personally wouldn't bother yet, get a spare set (get some spare hinge pins too, trust me.) You would have a # of spares, and if you find you are losing them frequently still, then I would think about changing.

All those parts are cheap on the bay.

Ah, good point about the cup size. I came from the Savage X/25 side.

I shredded a ton of cvd pins and most people say that hardened universals are alot more reliable. I tried a set on my e-maxx and on my custom Schumacher MI2 4wd buggy and never had problems after switching.

How about these?

Do they look strong enough? I have some like this on my E-Maxx running a MMM, Castle Neu and 5s lipo. They have worked flawlessly so far.

Universals generally are stronger since they use larger pins, but the first problem here is finding ones that are hard enough, and are made for the Savage XL/Flux.

Those will have the same issue with the Flux as the HPI CVDs mentioned above. The output cup accepts a larger ball end, so any CVDs made for the Savage 21/25/x/4.6 will have a lot of slop in the receiving end.

scarletboa 03.19.2009 12:46 AM

wait, so i have to get larger diff cups if i wanted to use the flux dogbones with my savage x 4.6 brushless conversion?

fastbaja5b 03.19.2009 02:46 AM

I tried the HPI Universals, and went back to the stock flux dog bones within a day. The heavyduty stuff that's on there already is the best you'll find right now

clink69 06.07.2009 10:20 PM

Definitely don't use CVDs, they will bend on hard jumps and cartwheels. I went through a few pairs on my brushless Revo before realizing you need the give... Dogbones is the way to stay.

I found out that I cracked the stock wheel hub side cup (hope I said that correctly) on my front wheel this weekend. The steering was all bound up - couldn't figure it out until I just about has the whole front end tore apart.
That's a heck of a thick piece of steel to crack, but someway, somehow, I did it!
