Sav XL conversion options..6 or 8S?
Need some thoughts on which way to go. So I have a bunch of different parts and options on which way to go. I''m just not quite sure how much power I'll need for the XL version of the Sav. I want to keep the big tall tires, or at least 40 series big joes or mashers down the line.
I'm really leaning 8S, but here's the setup options. 8S: MGM 9032 Tekno 1515/3D For batts I have Neu 30C 4S 5000 (x2), TrueRc 4S 5000 packs (x2) and some TRC 4S 3200 15C (x2) packs. Batts fit inside chassis. Not flux compartment. So if I go 8S, I have plenty of batts already. The Neus are new as well :) 6S: MMM Motor? 80mm medusa.. would sell 1515 to get I have many new 3S 4100 30C Neu packs. I was just going to sell these. Batts fit inside chassis and flux compartment. Powerwise I am aiming at 28V@ ~70-80A, ie ~2000W. Should be plenty and easy to do on the lower C TRC batts. For 6S more like 100A@ 21v. Batts will do that as well, just then I have all these 4s batts that are prolly worth little selling (other than the neus) Not really looking to go much over 40 w/ this. I also have a rustler what will use the 4s batts, no its nice to keep everything modular and just cut down on the # of batts I have laying around (too many as is). Also planning on getting my old revo running again (maybe as a slayer) and I would use the 4S batts in that. Not looking for much power in that, more for my son when he's a year or two older. Maybe a race class at a RCM bash. Dunno. So really I'm pretty well set on 8S. I'm best setup for it, and I really like HV. Every dude has a MMM, so doing something different would be cool. The 3D on 8S is a little high on rpm, but can be geared a bit low as the truck is so heavy anyway. TQ should be great. Otherwise I was going to get a 80mm 1100 kv medusa, but the Tekno was too good a deal to pass up, plus it has the build-in bulkheads, so I won't need to worry about a mount. I've got 3 qts of nitro to burn thru, so I've got some time to think. |
Personally I would go with an 80mm medusa, or a 1521. I lean towards the 1521 as you could use the flux motor mount. Not too sure if that will work with the xl chassis thought.
8s sounds better than 6s for a heavy vehicle. I plan to run 10s and a 1521(maybe a 1527 if i can get my hands on one) on my extended chassis savage, but more on that later! |
8s with a medusa 80mm 1100kv gets my vote.

ive tryed the 1600kv 80mm medusa in my e-revo geared 40mph and this motor overheat after 10 minutes(188f:surprised:) my vote goes for the neu 1521 and 8s:yes:

Did I mention the part where I'm a cheap bastard and don't want to buy a $$$ 1521? lol
That would be the top of my list, but I really don't want to pay over $150 for a motor. If the flux uses the 1515 1y w/ success, I would think the 1515 3D would do fine at the power levels I'm looking for. All the other options require getting/making a motor mount. W. the tekno the way it is I just need to cut some holes in the motor plate for 4mm bolts. Then it would slide easily for EZ meshing. I know the medusas are quality, but the neus are a bit higher and I'm not sure its worth dropping that bit in quality for a bit more TQ. The low kv motors have so much more TQ already, I don't want to be a backflip machine. That was one of the nice things about the nitro motor, a lot more controllable w/ that weak bottom end! |

Give the 1515 a try, sounds like it will be easy to mount. Where do you plan to put the lipos?

your right i destroyed many motor in past 12 month(12 in totals)...so im not to hard on my stuff....i take really care of my truck and electronic part...(cleaning,changing the part after 2 week of use and always check the temp for not overtemp)and me too i dont really understand why im not lucky with medusa motor(we are 3 here that we have issue with this brand) my friend here have the 2200kv in is lst (5 cell lipo)and he had overheat problem after 5 minutes(single speed geared for 40mph)why...we dont know.....:yes:so this is why now my vote already goeas for neu....or castle neu nothing else:whip: |
Go with 8S! I'm loving my Savage Flux on 8S. I just recently tried the Zippy 4S 4000mAH 25C packs. They fit in the Flux boxes and have been working great. All for under $200 bucks for both packs. The 1521 stays nice and cool. BTW, the Cen diffs have been holding up great, as has the Flux tranny.

Cool.. I think I pretty much had it decided on the 8S 1515 combo. :) Makes too much sense w/ what I already got.
I do want to fit the batts in the back. The XL is so long Ill have plenty of space. The 5000 packs might be a bit tight tho. All the others fit great. I'd like to get that Flux tranny gear if its ever released... I'd like to keep the 3spd parts intact. I did grenade a Cen diff tho..but that's for another thread 0_o |

That's gonna be one HEAVY truck! Mine Savage 25 with FLM extended low CG chassis and with a center diff weighs a bit under 12.5lbs. Might you consider a center diff conversion similar to other center diff Savages out there (like mine)? Could save you over half a pound and improve performance, as well as eliminate that weak spur/pinion link the stock truck uses. |

But yes, I really really want a CD. I had been working on a mount end of last year, but its a pain and expensive to do. Got halfway thru it. I wanted it to mount in at least one set of tranny holes and have motor forward. Later decided just to mount on a skid plate like a traditional diff. Lately I saw the (G?) maxx CD mount that mike made. I would really like something like that w. his slipdiff. I've got time to put this together, so I'll wait on those. the tekno mount is a simple mount for now and to see how it performs. If need be I'll step upto the 80mm 1100kv if needed. What is the amp draw on that thing btw? http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y25.../th_mount2.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y25..._savmount1.jpg |
Emachineshop's prices are always expensive! There's no way around that unfortunately. However if you have it made elsewhere (by Mike for example) you can get it done a lot cheaper.
My truck has shown peaks in excess of 4HP, about 120amps on hard acceleration (from 3700mah 20C batts). |
I am running 10s with a 1515/2y in a Losi 8t and it was a big improvement over the 2.5d and 6s I was running. Iam using 2 5s 3700 packs this setup is too heavy I wany to run 5s 2500 packs to get the battery weight under 650 grams right now its at 950
Iam using the Hv110 ESC with a pistix adapter and it is as smooth as any MMM with the recent firmware and software upgrades, the only problem is no reverse or brakes |
